  • This is my first video for this channel. I called the channel Little Tin Cans because aren’t we all just driving around in Little Tin Cans???
This is a front suspension swap from a 1979 Chevy 1 ton truck to my 62 1 ton truck. I hadn’t seen any videos on this for the 60 to 62 “C” series pick ups and somebody had asked me about information for the swap. Doing this on a 60 to 62 Is a little different from the 63 to 66 trucks. Not a lot but a little bit different.
The swap gives me disc brakes and coil springs instead of torsion rod suspension with drum brakes.
This is just a brief video showing what has to be done once the old front end is pulled out and the new one is in place. I’ll have a more complete video including time lapse to add to this later.

That’s a great question. After a little research, it would appear that you can get aftermarket rotors with a six hole pattern that will allow you to use your six hole wheels on the square body suspension. The C10 square body uses a five hole pattern. I was fortunate that both my 62 and my 66 have the eight hole pattern since they are the heavier models. My 62 has a one ton suspension in it and my 66 has a three-quarter ton. Both trucks are able to use the original style wheels if I want to use them.

What about adding the square body suspension to a 56 11/2 ton??

So sorry for the delayed response.
I’m not sure about that swap. I had a 56 3100 but that was about 40 years ago so I don’t remember what the crossmember looks like. It sounds like a good idea though. If you could measure the width of the outside of your frame rails, where the crossmember is, I can measure the width of the crossmember assembly. I would imagine that you would have to drill all the holes or almost all the holes to do the swap. If your original crossmember is riveted in, I would mark where it’s at and then take the rivets out, then slide the square body front suspension up in.

🤷Why would you get rid of the torsion bars suspension?

For me, it was quicker to swap the front crossmember out. The advantage to the torsion bars is that I could lower the truck if I wanted without changing springs. The advantage to changing the entire crossmember assembly over for me was that I also get heavier components than the original. With switching over to power steering and disc brakes it’s easier to change the entire crossmember assembly than to do it by component.
