- Here it is... the mega 10 door 1979 Suburban! Not only are we doing an overview of one of the coolest square body Chevys ever built, but a how to on converting the front end from 2WD to 4WD. Everyone knows we love squares, but this one puts it over the top!

Man, that's a killer rig. Don't forget the rear spring hanger braces on both hangers. Also the ORD motor crossmember will not work for a LT swap. The best place to get most of the conversion is a K5 blazer frame because they are very readily available because tons of those things have become complete unrepairable buckets of rust but the rear front hanger is wrong so you will have to buy that from LMC or fleabay. Also for the ORD front conversion a company called PB Fab makes a crossmember that fits in that area and bolts up with the hangers which really should make the frame horns rock solid.

Yes K5s are plentiful if you want to do factory crossmember swaps, all the conversion done on this truck works well and is super solid, but yes there are other companies that offer specialty parts as well. We did custom inner braces on the rear spring hangers instead of factory ones on this build. Just a quick showcase that it can be done without a donor truck, but we will do a video on a all factory conversion swap using a donor truck as well. Thanks for watching !
@@davis_off_road6524 I was mostly just going to mention the braces as you didn't mention them and it would be a bummer to have to make 2 orders. On the front this is the most informative video I have seen on the subject. Hell I found it because I am kicking through the front end of a 79 C10 frame and was hoping to find the actual measurements of where to put the rear portion. .

That is cool ! I ran into a guy years ago that was building a 4x4 just like yours in Caseyville ILLINOIS. I don't know if he ever finished it. Where did you purchase the dane 60 hubs ? I have a dually dane 60 that i need to change to single hubs.

Did that ORD cross member align with any of the existing holes in the bottom of the frame, or did you have to drill new ones? I’m trying to do the same thing on an 87 C10 right now. I tried using the upper parts (that the motor mounts attach to) from a factory 4WD, but not a single bolt hole lines up with anything.
The ORD pretty much lines up with the middle of the three holes that the 2wd crossmember was bolted to with just a small touch out of a drill bit. Then you can use the crossmember to guide drill the remaining 4 holes to locate it . Of coarse the factory motor mount plates have to be cut off and drilled but if you get the 4wd motor mounts in there it will work as it should.
When you make your video on the regular c-10 can you go into more detail on the transmission I’m trying to 4wd swap my 74 c20 and that’s the only part that’s confusing me
For sure we will go in depth on what works with what and the right parts to buy. But for a timely answer you can pull your transmission out , have the tail shaft swapped to a 4wd tail shaft (shorter than the 2wd tail shaft) and buy a transfer case (with transmission adapter) which we would recommend a np205 or a np208 case…. Np203 is an option as well, but not the best in our opinion. Bolt it all together and reinstall just like a transmission overhaul job. Of coarse you will need the 4wd shifter and hardware and to cut the hole in the floorboard for it . Another side note is the 2wd trucks have a small floorboard center tunnel hump where the 4wd cabs had a large center tunnel hump. If the truck doesn’t have a body lift you will need to reshape the floor slightly where the transfer case goes for clearance so it doesn’t touch the body.
what thickness of rear wheel spacers do you use on the 81-87 square body pickups?
Depends on the axle set up K10s we normally run 1.5” rear spacers to even it out with the front in 1 ton single rear wheel trucks typically at 2” rear Spacers.
Hey Did you use the 8 lug 2wd hubs on the new front diff or did you need to buy new hubs and rotors etc . Regards Ants
The 2wd hubs will not interchange on the 4wd Dana 60 front axle. This was a completely rebuilt front end that we had sitting ready to go in a project .

Unfortunately the only sizing being custom made for us is 15” and 16” diameter . Nothing for 17” wheels currently or in the works. Thanks for watching !
