What Happened Inside the Airplane Graveyard?

  • I visited Mojave, California which is a famous airplane graveyard in the desert. More than 100 planes are stored here and it is end of the line for most planes that arrive in the graveyard. I went inside an ex Thai Airways B747-400 to take a look at the interior, much to my surprise the interior had been kept intact. Then I step inside an ex-Qantas B747 and found my way to walk on the 747 wing! I could almost touch the winglet!
Then we drove to Victorville to meet up with an airplane scraper Huy, Huy gave us a tour and explained how they tear down airplanes using an excavator. The useful parts, such as the engines, the avionics and the interior, are usually stripped out for sale . We went inside an ex United B747-400 and ex Singapore/VIM B777-200 to take a look.
Talaat Captan, owner of Air Hollywood, and Anthony Toth, co-owner of the Pan Am Experience, appear in this video as tour guides of the airplane graveyard storage.

The reason why some A380s are already being retired is because they are just not economical enough for some of today’s airlines. It has nothing to do with the airframes or flying hours.... because the retired A380s still had many decades of live left in them. They just aren’t efficient enough, and they are also too large for many airports. This of course decreases versatility, and the amount of routes that the aircraft can execute.

Hi Sam. I am very impressed by your coverage of all the aircraft located in the Californian desert! I was very surprised to see a Qantas Boeing 747-400! My father used to work for Qantas and I have flown on many jumbo jets of Qantas in the past! Keep up the good work Sam and thank you so much for this very interesting download vlog!!

Great video Sam! I spent many years crawling around in the confined spaces and fuel cells of over a dozen types of aircraft. I actually worked on Spirit's ship 133 in the late 90s! Like you, I could go there and spend a week just milling around, like a kid in a playground! Thanks for the out of the ordinary, aviation video. Your videos are a gift to aviation enthusiasts the world over. Cheers!

Ive flown on this one too, must have done on account of 25 return flights on Thai 747s 400s, mostly in economy but a few upgrades to business class upstairs. Thai was always my favourite airline between Australia and the UK. The seat pitch in economy was 34''. I did the BKK to Phuket in that odd business class alongside the long galley.

      Thankyou.
The 747 is a great aircraft but it was designed before computers were big and as such it could be hard to work on, whereas the 767 was designed by computers and around easier access for maintenance workers.
All the best with your A&P's my friend.

It’s my dream to go into an airplane graveyard one day. Just staying there for a few hours, admiring these beautiful planes that are now having a well deserved peaceful rest after all those years of serving the sky.. this is just heaven. I like to think that all the birds chilling on the aircrafts are their souls.. weird thing to think but that’s just how I see things I guess.
