I think I have a future in stand up 😂 Thanks for watching, y'all! This episode was a tough one to write - and I'd be interested to know your thoughts especially when it comes to how comedy can hurt people/do comedians have a responsibility to be woke (for lack of a better term). Aka no i haven't watched Dave Chappelle's new Netfilx thing 😅
Evelyn From The Internets I think on some levels they have a responsibility because if you are making jokes about groups of people they can often time be perpetuating stereotypes.
I also think they have to be able to be honest and sometimes honesty makes people uncomfortable. It is what it is.
First, I just want to say how much I LOVE this channel/show! You all do such an amazing job and there is no other channel on CZcams that I legit get excited for when I see I new video posted--THANK YOU for your service LOL. Evelyn, to answer your question: I do think Black comedians have a responsibility to be woke. While I don't think that its necessarily fair (they SHOULD be able to joke about whatever they want to), I also don't think that our community (African Americans) is at place in our global society where comedians (or any of us for that matter) can afford to not be woke. We are still in a very fragile societal state. As you ladies said in the video, we now have the ability and "freedom" to help control the way media portrays us, but we need to handle that new-found ability with care. At this point, our culture inherently turns what has always been meant to kill us, into something that we can survive off of. Comedy, like food, is the collard greens that were once random foliage in a field, the well seasoned chit'lins (although they actually WILL kill you Lol) that were just the scraps of a pig carcass...that's one of the many aspects of our culture makes me feel proud. After all, we still need to be able to laugh to keep from crying nowadays--theres still a lot work to be done and comedians still play a major role in that. Ok I'm done. Lol!
Whatever you do, you won't please everyone, that's impossible. The only thing comedians can do is to be true to who they are. I don't think we should ask comedians to be the spokespersons for a group that did not even elect them.
Pulls out Netflix just to talk to you about the subject matter. I love SAY IT LOUD! 😍
Stick & Stones. It's deep. You gonna love it.
Literally as you said “that was a PBS joke,” I said the same out loud and actually laughed 😂😂🥴
Gabrielle Pollard same
We told Evelyn to bomb, that was the bit. Then she ended up being hilarious... as per usual. I don't know why we thought that would work. Also. shout out to y'all in the comments referencing the ending jokes. Y'all are doing the Lord's work with our watch time :)
Hallease “Al Gore Rhythm” was 👌🏾😄
"we know george carlin exist" this made me spit my coffee.
It made me think are they racist
Ya should have just went with my first instincts they were right anyways
@@james10739 damn that is hardcore. I look foward to the video.
@Useonlyforstudy M'Dear no I just want better for society I mean look where this stuff has lead us
“We know George Carlin exists. We know, we know.”
I LAUGHED SO HARD AT THAT
//immediately searches for calling in black// 😂
It's in the description box and the "I"
Me too!!🤣
Y’all make ME laugh!! And yes, I’m a white mom with three blue eyed babies, but I like how you are bridging that “gap” that society created and working towards closing it. Your conversations and comedy are both educational and enjoyable and rest assured I hear what you are saying and my children will be the ones holding out their hands (along with their mama) to close that gap too because to them there isn’t one and that’s the way I intended. Culture is to be celebrated, hair and pigment difference is to be celebrated, and new experiences are to be celebrated too. I’m grateful for your show and all you teach. ❤️🙌🏼
I am again baffled and amazed at the timeliness of this video in reference to my own commentary amongst friends where we discussed the type of humor we like and why (this was before Dave Chapelle’s most recent work released on Netflix) and then social commentary at large! Say it Loud is simply #relevant . We also shared how much we loved PBS shows growing up in that same conversation. 😅
I gotta say that Patrice O Neal is probably my favourite comedian. Unfortunately he has passed but he’s definitely one of those “your fav’s fav” type deal.
Facts.
I clicked so fast cuz i thought ev was doing real standup in the thumbnail.
Oh good, my thumbnails are working.
Same here 😂
Samee!!!! Not disappointed tho
@@penny.ventures facts!
😂😂Say It Loud is honestly one my fav CZcams channels!! I love how they share the depth and history behind black culture.
It inspires a lot of the content on my channel
African Tea Just checked out your channel! It’s great! Can’t wait to see your growth 💕
You guys are like a breath of fresh air. Informative, cutting edge and funny. I love it. Please continue your great work.
Kaira Allen Me Too
As a very white baby boomer, you are a breath of fresh air! You are never too old to learn.
We need to protect Theresa at all costs. She's precious. 😻😹🙏🏾
Also a huge fan of Kevonstage!
Same!
I love y’all sm. Y’all make me feel like a pbs kid again lol
Felt like I was hanging out with FRIENDS (who were smart and had something to say)👌
Say It Loud hit another one out of the park
I'm loving this channel. I recommended it to all of my friends.
"Calling in Black" deserves an entire episode of Say It Loud. I have personally witnessed this in my black friends. Exhaustion from holding their breath. It makes me sad to know they experience it. I have no way to express that I know something they don't know I know.
Calling in black, also known as taking a ME (mental health)day.
"Al Gore rhythm" 😂
I admit that I mostly didn't understand Pryor's jokes...at least not in the 80s. Maybe I was too young, very likely I was much too white and surrounded entirely by a lot of that thinking - despite my mother having married a young black man, she didn't do it for any of the "right" reasons and so, I can't claim any kind of insight from that, even if that particular stepfather did introduce me to Pryor's comedy, a little.
BUT! I've recently watched a couple of things from Wanda Sykes and that was much much more accessible for me, and at the same time - just as you said, it's sharing human experiences, giving a window into a different way of seeing things, a different angle on EVERYTHING. And knowing more now than I did in the 80s (I would hope!) it resonated deeply on certain subjects, and opened my eyes on others.
So much of the time, my own favorite kinds of jokes involve a lot of word play, both puns and just plain playing with language - Carlin of course was very well known for it but Sykes does it too ("black people don't play!"), and I find that intensely enjoyable and memorable. I think for myself, being able to laugh at the same jokes with a person, makes it possible to cry with them too. It makes it easier to care about them, to connect them with your own self. Even if that's only a tiny step, it's still a step in the right direction.
♥️ Kev on Stage.
Dick Gregory was a breakthrough for comedy as well....🤔 would be great to see a segment on him🙏🏿
I'm 55. I just started doing stand up last year, at an annual camping event. I have so far only done the two shows. Most, and I do mean most, of the attendees are white. Some attendees have known me for many years; some have never met me at all. My friends know my irreverent sense of humor and doing stand up was a bucket list thing that was a success. I did it again this year. I was only supposed to have 10 minutes but I went on for 20 and for the second year in a row, there was laughter throughout. I'm really loving it. So much that I approached another friend who owns a club where they occasionally do shows. I am about to post the video from the last two years on my FB.
Thank you for this video. It popped up on my feed right around the same time I was second guessing posting. My life experiences, my outlook, and my age all give me a different perspective. The second guessing stopped about halfway through this video.
Thank you for the inspiration and encouragement!!!
Pretty Vee and B Simone are hilarious. Pretty Vee especially, her physical humor is reminiscent of Lucille Ball to me
Hallease... your voice lifted my soul! Love you guys from Manchester UK
😎✌🏿
Love you guys from London UK 🇬🇧
Can't believe you guys are back!!! Been staring at my screen for weeks waiting for a notification from you guys... 🙃
It's PBS. We'll probably get one episode a week.
Kev on stage is the best. I love him
This video was so informative and helpful. Thank you for making it. PS I’ve never heard AAVE pronounced that way! I’ve always just said the acronym by the individual letters. Really cool bonus thing to learn from a great video
I love Richard Pryor. My favorite comedian, my favorite jokes to quote (cleanly), and I love rewatching his old work. He was a great man
This is so true! I'm Latina and I more personally connect with Latino/a comedians. Gabriel Iglesias is my favorite beyond anyone else.
Evelyn you are quite funny, I miss Azi, but I like Hallease, great job ladies
We miss her too
I think that we're simply not realistic - comedy is a reflection of how people still think today, and that's what makes 'woke-ness' in comedy such a hot topic. People still have racist, sexist, homophobic, gendered and anti-ableist ways of thinking, and comedians capitalize on that... or... their 'wokeness' stopped at what ever impacts them, and for a lot of famous black male comedians, that's race. It drives me crazy, and the discourse is needed, but it's sobering to realize that so many people haven't changed.
And I had to call in black during Ferguson as far away as I am, but everyone I work with had no idea what was going on because...
Why has CZcams deprived me of such a gem! I'm happy i now know about this channel 💕
This was sooo good! Well done ladies.👏🏾👏🏾
Richard Pryor will always be funny
ALWAYS
All hail the king
Always
I absolutely love this series. It's so informative and always entertaining. You guys are the best ❤
Please don't EVER stop these videos...Lyke EVER🎬🎬🎬😎
Look at Kev!!! I love him too!
I loved this presentation!!! Thank you. It was very rhythmic. You ladies are amazing. Thanks again.
Y’all are like that thread on Twitter that went on about if black twitter/experience as college dissertation topics actualized. I can’t get enough 💜
I looooooove Kev and do boys podcast! I always laugh with them. And also, Evelyn (of course!) and Nicole TV is funny to me too.
I know Evelyn has been on the internets for a while but the calling in black skit was my first introduction to her & it cut me pretty deep - definitely a laughing to keep from crying moment. Great vid keep the knowledge comin!
Call in Black is something I ACTUALLY want to do once a week. I loved that video so much. It's funny cuz its true.
Kevonstage and Josh Pray are fabulous! K-von is good too.
I really dug this video. It was pretty dope. Thank you both for the work you put into it. Two things: 1) Those well-placed close-ups on Hallease's facial expressions were the perfect punctuations. Nice touch. 2) That was the first time I've ever heard anyone pronounce AAVE like a word ("ave") instead of an abbreviation. It was unexpectedly beautiful. I think we should all start using that.
you girls have such beautiful skin
I love the back and forth this duo have when gracing from point to point, it's seamless
I'm obsessed with this channel!!
This channel is just... excellent. Nuanced, informative, entertaining, hilarious. Excellent
My goodness. The girl in the glasses is hypnotic...wow
Evelyn is always funny even when she's playing a "supposedly" not funny version of herself!😄 Other favorites on YT for me are MissJayDMV, New Father Chronicles and Trevor Noah. I really love the quote you mentioned regarding teaching. Unfortunately, a lot of people are actually boring...adulthood can do that to you 😫
My favorite Pryor sketch on CZcams "The Richard Pryor Show - Uncensored Food Foreplay" Loved him! Thanks for this insightful commentary!
I’m always kinda scared to go in these comment sections given some of the attitudes online, but then so happy when I see you guys getting the accolades and recognition you deserve. This show is so excellent. ❤️
Thank you so much for making this. I have wrestled in my own comedy with what I choose to joke with and about. This was so thoughtful and helped me to process how to better do that moving forward. Bless you both.
I love learning just as much as I love laughing and you give me both 👑🙏🏻👑
Something that makes me laugh long and hard is Evelyn's 'knuck if you buck' college party story. It's the way Evelyn tells the story but the story along with my recognition of a scenario that I hadn't quite been able to put into words!
Such a good video! And also loving the recommendations
This was a gooooooooooood video. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Can you all do a video on godparents in the black community?
Listen!!!! Yes eh 🇹🇹
Play aunties, play uncles, and the whole "extended" family structure
YES and play family
Good point and what's their purpose?
@@TheLadyBlerd Wow, people take it that far though
I'm super hype about this! Especially since I specifically asked for this on Twitter haha
You guys have made me open my eyes to a whole other part of this world. It’s amazing to hear history and learn things that aren’t taugh much in school or in media. Love you ❤️
The classics never get old.
I love say it loud! I learn so much and laugh and I’m so entertained.
... This was filmed before Kev had a beard. Wooooow
Great episode. Thanks
This was very well made. 👏
Love the quality of this production
I have just found your channel and I am enjoying everything I have watched. My 9 year old loooooves this channel and wants to add it to her homeschool schedule. Thanks so much for all of the information and time!
When I was a child my parents had a VHS copy of Whoopie Goldberg on Broadway 1985 where she does several skits as different people telling their stories, a New York junkie who visits the Anne Frank House, a little girl who wraps a yellow shirt around her head and talks about her long beautiful hair, a Jamaican woman who marries an old man, etc. I watched this many times as a child.
As I grew up I slowly grew to realize the significance of her routine. Like, it surprised me to realize that some people of color don't like their natural hair. I didn't know who Anne Frank was until I was a teenager, but that routine makes me cry everytime. Having people talk about realness, even if it's a character, can really affect your world view.
I’m just in love with how clean your audio is 😍
Kev on Stage!!! Yes!!!
16:30 Al Gore Rhythm LOL
As a White X-enial, I love this channel for it's fresh realism. You hit the nail on the head by saying that humor affects comprehension. You help me to step back and look at life through a different lens than I would typically use. I consider myself blessed having been raised by parents who - while they had certain racial perspectives growing up and still adhere to these more often than - encouraged my brother and I to be informed of our world. While my core group of friends and associates tend to resemble me in appearance, I have had the honor of calling individuals of all creeds and colors friend at various times in my life. I just have certain interests and comfort areas, and more often than not certain people fit into the niche better than others.
That being said, I especially liked the nod to Trevor Noah - brief though it was. While I embrace the reality of what you expressed regarding Richard Pryor's effect on comedy in general, following Trevor has given me yet another dimension as to how race relations in America are seen from someone looking on from the outside. Comedy is gold, but intelligent comedy is cosmic. Like Richard and Trevor, Say It Loud is cosmic in my book!
well a little pryor is in eddie chirs dave and all of the new ones coming out so yeah he still funny
I'm glad I found your channel!
So true about watching your news from late-night shows! I need some comedic relief to swallow the bitter pill that is our society right now!
One of my favourite comedians is Trevor Noah. I love his use of comedy/social commentary. I'm not American, and there are times when Americans talk about race, and I just don't get it (that's one of the reasons I've subscribed to your videos). I find Trevor easier to understand culturally. (I've known many more South African people than Americans).
Evelyn parents are from Kenya even she has a different relation to race different from black Americans who descend from slavery who are the majority of the black population in the U.S.. A lot African immigrants don't identify by race but rather culture. African immigrants are usually treated better in the U.S. They are seen as people who deserve more opportunity. Sometimes I feel it's dishonest for someone whose parents who don't even identify as black to speak for black Americans because she doesn't have ancestors who were forced to sharecrop in the south or had to sit in the black section of a bus. Sometimes it also feels like she plays up this black Americanness and does imitations of black older people that her own uncles and aunts don't even identify with. Its like me doing Kenyan accents to imitate black Kenyans when my own family isnt Kenyan.
@@jasminepearls1047 You might be right. It's not authentic to speak on experiences you never had, as if you had them.
I sense in their videos, not the same level of empathy you might get from a Black American who ancestors were enslaved in the US.
Send a lotta love from Brazil!
Holy crap! Talk about a light bulb moment! Richard Pryor saying when people talk, they figure out the problem is greedy people, that may be what set my Dad on his path of unlearning his racism. I know there were many aspects to it including his children moving to more urban areas so he was exposed to a variety of different cultures (he was born, raised, and lived his adult life in lily white Podunk, northern Michigan) but my Dad loved comedy and Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy were two favorites. Oh, man, I wish he was still alive so I could talk to him in depth, really pick his brain about this.
Wow, I just discovered this channel, sending you love !
Yes my fresh dose of say it loud 😌
I love this show!!!! Y'all are so great
7:10 ‘Tension in the laughter. #Awkward!’ Love your face 😘
This was a fun and informative video. It was also a clever way of
weighing in on the Dave Chappelle controversy without actually talking
about it. Ironically, it's the clip of him talking to Oprah that
demonstrates most people's complaints about him the best. He messed up
in his recent shows by taking it upon himself to use other marginalized
people as the fodder for jokes instead of just sticking with his own
experience (and then playing the victim when he was called out). And
that wouldn't be so bad if he really understood those communities and
was laughing with them. Instead, he just seemed to be using the same
tired stereotypes everyone already holds to get cheap laughs at those
groups' expense.
Dave is an observational comedian that not only use his own experiences but others... that's why we love him...
@@AfroVibez Dave's regular comedy always makes the people perpetuating oppression the butt of the joke. Whenever he has LGBTQ in his mouth, they are the butt of the joke with no satirical commentary on the oppressive behaviour on antinlgbtq like his usual comedy does for other topics. That's the difference. I'm sure you didn't watch this whole brilliant video and somehow miss that?!
Comedy is comedy. You not liking its angle does not take away from the strength and humor of his jokes. Just wasn’t for you. Dave was being dave, sjws just wanted something that they didn’t get. He joked on everybody and always has. It wasn’t for you, that simple.
You go with that lip color, Evelyn. Yaass!
That last one 😫😫
Al gore rhythm 😭😭😭🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
For me, what I love is deep comedy. I never got into slap stick or prop stuff, with the exception of Gallagher... The first one. I love deep, meaningful, insightful comedy... And YES, Richard Pryor is still relevant in today's stand up.
Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Wanda Sykes, Dave Chappelle, Jo Koy, George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Kamau Bell, DeRay Davis, Katt Williams, DL Hughley, John Leguizamo, Trevor Noah, I just got into Aziz Ansari cause his new special was deep, Michael Chi, Tracey Morgan, Hasan Minhaj, Steve Harvey, Bernie Mac from Def Comedy Jam all the way to Bernie Mac Show (RIP), Paul Mooney is great on stage, but he seems a bit uncomfortable doin it, Mark Maron, Kevin Hart, Patton Oswalt, Jim Gaffigan, Gabrial Eglesias, Ray Romano after he came back to stand up, Sebastian Maniscalco, Ricky Gervas, Jeff Ross, Dave Attell, and my list goes on and on... And on.
Stumbled on your video and I am so glad i clicked! Great work guys - loving all the videos! Sending love your way from South Africa!
What a great video! I loved your calling in black video Evelyn, you nailed the humour without compromising the social message behind it. Keep up the good work ladies

This video was so informative and uplifting! I really enjoy your content. Thank you
Loving the Kenyan 🇰🇪 pendant.
Comedic content abounds when talking about parents, especially if you are 2nd generation born of immigrant parents. My mom is Greek and some of stories about her and my upbringing is comedy GOLD!
I'm so glad I discovered this show. I might have said it before, but I feel that it would be a great tool for classrooms to initiate discussion. Might be a good tool in retirement centers for the same reason, come to think of it!
What did you guys think of Larry Wilmore? He was my dude when the daily show changed, and then they moved HIM out and then I got kinda concerned. What did you guys think of that transition?
Love KevOnStage! #RandR
I’ve really been enjoying the more detailed explorations of individuals like Pryor and Missy Elliot and their contributions to the world! Keep up the awesome work, ladies!
