    This series is brill.
    Nice playing as usual Pete.
    See below for "Amore" stupidity:
"When the tone hits your ear
    like a sixpack of beer
    That's Honore.
    When the tasteful licks fly
like a bird in the sky
    That's Honore
When he sits down to play
    on his purple tele
    That's Honore
When the jokes that he tells
need some mind bleach as well
    That's Honoooore!"
    Cheers guys!

I first found out about the small speaker overdrive right at the end of 2021. Bought it as soon as it was available at a store in the US. I love how it sounds with my tele, and it stacks really well too!

the point Lee is making is spot on. back 20 years ago, finding boutique pedals at all let alone overdrives was very hard. you had to basically buy them used from touring guitar players. that’s why all-tube amp heads have multiple gain channels. millennials are like “i’d just use the clean tone and if I want overdrive I’lluse my pedals”. well that wasn’t an option. gain stacking with pedals wasn’t a thing until very recently. which is why the tube screamer is famous. because, like Lee said, they were used as a volume tool and not for its “tone”. before social media existed.

The Supafunk envelope filter is one of the best I've heard on a pedal. Really impressed by the Small Speaker too.

TRex need to sign Pete up. I hate delay pedals, never have worked out how to play with one, but he made me want to try again. You’re a legend Pete.

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 Před rokem

I don't see how you play without it; I don't know a single guitarist who doesn't use delay. It fills the empty spaces and smooths out the edges and transitions from one tone to the other- especially if you have tails turned on. A good delay, reverb, preamp, and compression pedal- setup properly, will make your live playing sound like it's been mixed in a studio.

With respect, I think you might have missed an important bit about the 3 Series Screamer (which I got about 3 weeks ago). The toggle switches between two modes. One mode emulates what Josh started out creating in his pedal career, a modded Ibanez Tube Screamer tone. Switched into the other position, it's all his own. For $99 it's a dynamite pedal. And as long as I'm coming off like a JHS fanboy, I have the 3 Series Delay and it's terrific as well.

Lee, plug in a 57 Custom Champ, the one they make now. Set it to 3, tell me (using any pick-up that isn’t the bridge) that they don’t have enormous low end. I think they have too much in fact. It’s only when they’re especially open that the low end seems more controlled. Treble boosters and eq pedals at the ready with a lot of the very basic small speaker amps! - LOVE the sound of that Small Speaker Overdrive pedal!

this discussion is about the “make sure I’m doing what everyone on else is doing aka John Mayer’s pedalboard”
here’s what every IG guitarist has (or a clone), whether they need it or not, just to deal with their massive insecurities…they are: Klon, TS10 (could literally be had for $60 before people saw JM using one) Bluesbreaker, Noble ODR-1, the Tim/Timmy, Strymon modulation, Xotic EP Booster, 1981 (proco rat), Eventide H9, Cali 76
there, now you can be like everyone else and finally sleep at night 😂

The Commodore does actually do the Plexi thing quite well. The Tone slider accurately sounds like it's blending between the treble and normal channels on a four-hole Plexi.

In answer to Pete's question about why would one buy the JHS Screamer instead of a cheap TS mini pedal, I think the answer lay in the +/- toggle. From the manual: "Toggle changes the clipping. Up is asymmetrical clipping (which is the strong mod clipping). Down is symmetrical clipping (stock TS9 TS808 style)." If you want the JHS mod, you want that pedal. If you don't care about it, any TS9 or clone will do fine.

  • @therewasascene
    @therewasascene Před 2 lety

    Captain…
You didn’t want to show what max gain sounded like, if not for just a second? I was curious to hear how hard that JHS screamer would go as you turned it up, but you left me hanging at about 80%. 😭 I know no one uses it for that, but I heard new wild textures emerging. Sadness.
I do like that solid gold bluesbreaker. Versatile and aesthetically pleasing.
0.0 oh my the Replica is amazing. Character on those basic delay tones and that driven runaway sound is unique and exciting.

In Defense of the Tube Screamer
First, I need to clarify that I'm talking about the Ibanez _Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro TS808_ and not any other Tube Screamer, whether by Ibanez or any other company or individual.
It does something that I haven't heard other overdrives do, not even other Tube Screamers. When used as a boost, with little to no "Overdrive" dialed in and maximum or close to maximum "Level," it adds a certain sizzle to what I think of as the top end of my guitar's/amp's sound. My mental nickname for this added flavor is "crispy-crunchiness." It's not obnoxious (if you don't run the "Tone" control too high) or ear-piercing. It's a sound that you usually get when you double-track guitars in recording, a sound that's not there _unless_ you double-track guitars in recording, a little extra upper or upper-mid bite. Something to do with the comb-filter dynamics of the two tracks' signals when played together simultaneously, doubtless. Now, maybe there are other, non-TS808 overdrive circuits out there that will do all this, too--I haven't played _every_ overdrive in existence, but I haven't found it or them as of yet.
It also tightens up the bass in a useful way. Turning up a tube amp to where you're getting a goodly amount of crunch or grind can cause its preamp circuit and output section to get woolly, flubby and muddy. The TS808 can do wonders at combating that tendency while still leaving enough low end for your tone to still be big and brawny.
I understand when people don't like the Tube Screamer. Used in the way you would _think_ it's supposed to be used it can be underwhelming and impart a boxy sound to a rig. Maybe that's why it's popular with Strat-into-Fender-amp players: it fills in the "scoop" of Fender amps when played with Fender single-coils with some mid-range. But, to me it really shines as a clean(-ish) boost to an already clipping or crunching tube circuit, adding distortion while minimizing muddiness.
    Here endeth the rant.

T-Rex pretty much went to shit, only a few pedals left in production. Anyway I wonder what it was about Replica that made people like David G or Pete Townshend use it.
