- Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter born in 1840. He is known for his dreamlike artwork which gave way to art movements such as Dadaism and Surrealism. Some of his well-known works include The Cyclops, Baronne de Domecy, Closed Eyes and many others.

I wish this video ( and internet!) was available in 1990 when I had my term paper at high school with Decadentism!!! Odilon Redon was the Art subject and very few I could find about him… 🙏
Yes. But there was the library. And reading . I’m happy I didn’t have the internet to do my work and thinking. Having to source out the information, analyze and interpret, place in context, form your own argument and articulate it - plus the reading and research - all that is important. It’s not just passing on the paper or test the easiest way. I expect you did and likely learned well due to no internet. This is entertaining and a good way for interested people to learn a bit. But it’s not what formal study is supposed to be.
internet did exist in 1990.... it was just dial-up and not overly commercial.
@@lisaj2269 googling info and reading info from a book is the same thing.. not much different, you still have to post sources of sites. Can make an argument that books give you the answer just the same.

I first discovered Redon at a LACMA exhibit years ago. I was surprised that, even though his pieces weren't as big and colorful as the exhibits around him, his work was extremely intriguing and compelling. I agree with you about his unique vulnerability, they all felt personal and made me want to spend more time with them.

I have loved Redon’s art for more years than I care to state. You taught me much about an artist I have admired and explored through about two thirds of my life. Thank you, beautifully presented.
I discovered Odilon Redon in 1969 as an art student pursuing our college library. Lover of the Symbolists, I found a book written completely in French on Redon, with beautiful plates. I immediately fell in love with his mystical style. Thank you for this presentation.
The intriguing thing about Redon is that he created many of his masterpieces in the autumn of his life. The colorful boat trip was completed when he was 63, and many of his esotherical pastels where created when he was past 70. In a way, this is similar to the work of Claude Monet, who was born in the same year, 1840, and created his famous water lilies when he was past 70, i.e. around the same time.
"Esotherical"? Are you sure you're using the right word? I don't see anything esoteric about these pieces.

I have never heard of him before this video. You did an excellent job of describing him and his art. I must admit I find it a bit different than what one normally sees, but I also find it very interesting. I want to look at each piece for a longer time than you allowed. I want to see what else there is to see in each piece. This artist had a special mind for art and his works cause one to stop and enjoy each piece as one ponders just what it is they see. Thank you for this.
I really like the “Butterflies” painting. I like his use of color in that one. The charcoal one, with the giant eye, I also liked that one. There was something- interesting- about it that I just can’t put my finger on. But “The Cyclops”… I don’t know, that one creeped me out. I felt like it was staring at me and if it was hanging on a wall that eye would follow you. That just creeps me out. In general, I wasn’t a fan of the paintings I saw, but those 2 particular pieces I liked.

Its presently 12:24 AM, and I just discovered your videos and their quite amazing. Please do a review of Juan Luna's Spolarium and the Stanczyk's The Sad Clown. Both are deeply underrated paintings. Keep up the amazing work. Girl, you and you're channel have got great potential.
The thing about the Guardian Spirit piece that stands out to me is the sharp contrast in the skin of the spirit. Monochrome comes with a lot of limitations and imagination, but in this case it seems fairly apparent that something was intended. On the one hand, to me it makes it resemble a single huge eyeball, if you drop focus. On the other, it particularly highlights the alien nature of the spirit, along with the short forehead and broad nose. It's quite a long way from almost any other depiction of a spiritual being, it's almost uncoupled from consensus reality. I'd never seen Redon's work before but this video has sold me on learning more.

Odilon Redon (o-dee-yoe-n - which was his nickname, meaning swan - ray-doe-n) created noirs with lithographic printing AFTER they were drawn in charcoal. I've been studying and reading about him since 1987 when my painting professor recognized an affinity to him in my painting. I have a few books about him. I even used to paint floral arrangements and always used to put flowers in my paintings. I feel his influence to this day. Even though his work went from something subtly menacing and nightmarish in b&w to being more sunny and dreamy in color, I still find that a touch of that menace can be found in his dreamscapes if you know where/how to look. I appreciate that particular element.

I don't know that much about art but the Cyclops gotta be one of his most famous work in the modern era, I've seen that before a bunch of times but don't recognize his other work in this video..

As a teenager I discovered Redons ‘silence’ At MoMa. It was so soothing that I returned to meditate in it many times until I left the City.

I think these pieces are a beautiful example of how not everything that is monstrous is a monster.
The balloon charcoal sketch might imagination of that during the Franco-Prussian War baloons were used to transit to and from besieged Paris and of course for observation.

I remember reading about Odilon Redon at the recommendation of a professor in college, I think I took some ideas from him when formulated my senior art thesis, but damn I don't think I gave him enough analysis, because I didn't know half the things this video summarized.

I've tried to watch this video 3 times already because the subject seems very interesting but... I can't get past the narration. It's so slow. I understand it's perhaps intended to add atmosphere but it just drives me up the wall, I keep yelling internally "finish the sentence!"
Agreed. I had to speed up the video. The spaced out pacing is awkward & makes it hard for me to focus on what’s being said. Feels like she has a school project & is trying to make the video long enough to fulfill the time requirement.

OK. That giant head drawing is very unsettling. It's like I used to believe. An enormous entity looking down deeply at me. My every move, my every moment, my every thought, and deed. It is horrific! When I first came to understand there was nothing there, A void appeared for a short time. I lay in bed and the ceiling opened up to the universe. It was empty. Enormous and empty of a watcher. No one making sure things went a certain way. Then I felt privacy at last. I felt grounded, and that I belonged among the other beings and plants on this planet No floating head however concerned is a good thing to me. I am glad it is gone from my existence.

Nice video. I am not a huge fan of Redon. Like Van Gogh there is a little too much of the painter in his work for me, but his work is interesting in the scheme of things going on in the 1860s - 80s. Art like Redon's seems to me to be dark even when the subject is light hearted - but that is my own feeling of course. The idea in a work like the Cyclops seems to have been perfected in a work like Dubuffet's 'Cow with the Subtle Nose'. Have you seen that one? Both are rather sweet, but I find Dubuffet's lighter style and more loveable than Redon's work.
