  • In the Victorian era people had a lot less to occupy their time. That meant that in a lot of cases they had to get creative. In this video we will explore four instances of weird things that people in the 1800s did for fun.

In the Philippines, we still hold picnics at graveyards. It’s common on birth or death anniversaries, and everyone does it at Allhallowtide to clean the graves and sweep tombs. Some spend just the day, or all three days to do as the Victorians did: bond with living family and honour the dead. A happy occasion nationwide, but also a travel-heavy holiday.

@@Historidame It is, look for news reports on Allhallowtide here! Always a carnival atmosphere in large graveyards nationwide, and it can be a noisy occasion. And the stacked tombs of the Victorian Era sound like those we still have today as families pile the relatives one on each other with limited space.

@@rmn3186 Actually, we did have Chinese-influenced offerings to the dead in some places where Chinese traders settled and interacted with our ancestors. When we were ruled indirectly via Mexico (Virreinato de Nueva España), we imported cuisine and folkways including those surrounding Día de Muertos (including the term for ghost, "multó", and the name of the day in Tagalog is a direct calque of the Spanish: "Araw ng mga Patáy"). We do have a direct Mexican influence on the practises surrounding that holiday. Nowadays, we do offer favourite foods even on death anniversaries in front of the photos of the dead.

"Freak shows" could be used to show & prove ideas. 1 near the end of the Victorian era, had a show that saved 1000s of babies. During that time there weren't neonatal units, & Drs didn't see the need in prolonging premature babies lives. Incubators weren't new, but were expensive, & unknown by most. 1 man in the US, showed preemies in incubators, cared for by nurses. Visitors would come back repeatedly, & that money paid for equipment, costs, & nursing care till the babies went home w/their families. Some of his practices were used, or influenced care when the neonatal units opened decades later.

OMG. The thumbnail pic you used for this video looks like they were recreating the dance from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. I kind of think if the Victorian's had known about that, they would do it though. Probably at the cemetery even! The taxidermy kind of creeps me out. Especially with the baby animals because no way an entire litter or more of kittens died a natural death. Even if the "artist" didn't off them himself, someone likely did and that's all I can think about looking at those displays. That said, this video was very informative and fun and I enjoyed it immensely. TY!

Taxidermy is mostly horrifying today, but when there was no tv, and less books, and less leisure time for a larger portion of the population, taxidermy probably was thrilling and humorous and wondrous. I don't imagine everyone didn't feel sorry for the dead animals, but I imagine the excitement and spectacle overtook many who may have otherwise had that inclination.

I have lunch in the cemetery around twice a week. There’s a really nice shady area near my Dad, Godmother and grandparents graves and I work near the cemetery. So I take my lunch over and sit under the tree and have lunch with them. I read and eat my food and just hang out there on my lunch break. It’s quiet and no one bothers me. It was my fathers birthday a few days ago to. So I took a cupcake and put a candle in it and sang to him and ate the cupcake while I talked to him. We all grieve in our own way. And I think having a little lunch in a cemetery is peaceful. My town has some parks but they’re all near loud roadways and they’re not as calm.

Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana was designed based on the Victorian model. There are 20+ miles of quiet, well maintained paved roads inside the ‘park’ and the administration ENCOURAGES runners and cyclists to use them so long as they avoid areas actively being used for funerals and/or mourners. They even used to hold a fall “bike rodeo” for kids. I’ve spent many hours there on my bike, and it wasn’t creepy at all.
