This Painfully Detailed Painting Revealed His Tragic Illness
This piece is called Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele by Jan van Eyck. Joris van der Paele was a wealthy canon of St Donatian Church in Bruges and the man who commissioned this painting. He was very rich but very unwell and thought he was going to die and so he hoped that in creating this painting he could keep his soul alive forever in heaven.
We’re placed in a church with Mary, baby Jesus, St. Donatian, St. George and Joris van der Paele (and a parakeet). Van der Paele appears to have been praying just moments ago. Perhaps the scene before us depicts a vision that came to the Canon during one of his prayer sessions. He likely created this painting also as a sort of medical certificate to excuse him from his duties at church that he was unable to carry out due to his ill health.
Jan van Eyck has injected so much detail in this painting that doctors today have been able to diagnose the canons exact ailments: polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis. I hope you all love looking at all of the amazing detail in this painting like I do. Thanks for watching!

This piece is called Portrait of Mlle Lange As Danaë by Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson. This painting was the artist's way of getting revenge on the model. But what started off as a means of getting even destroyed the model’s reputation, ruined her career, and forced her to leave the country. But what about this painting could be so bad? Let’s start with the artist. Girodet was born into ...

This piece is called The Awakening Conscience by William Holman Hunt. It feels like we’re peaking in on a quiet scene between two lovers, but if we look at it through the lens of someone living in the 1800s, it takes an unsettling turn. After looking at it in this way, we realize that this woman isn’t this man's wife, she’s his mistress and this room isn’t for comfort, it’s for convenience. The...

This piece is called Ophelia by John Everett Millais. It depicts a scene in the Shakespeare Play Hamlet where a grief stricken Ophelia accidentally falls into a stream and drowns. After months of painting the flora and fauna, Millais brought the canva...

This piece is called The Great Wave, also known as Under The Wave Off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. You’ve probably seen it more times than you can count, but you might discover that you’ve been looking at it wrong the all along. It seems so calm and serene. This piece is called Anguish by August Friedrich Schenck. A mother sheep cries out in despair over the death of her lamb, as a group of crows wait patiently to feast on it. Because that’s all they really need to do. ...

    Very interesting. Oleanders are native to the Mediterranean, which is most likely why they are present in the painting. They are also only deadly if consumed. I grew up with them in Southern California. They are lovely flowers.

    Perhaps the painting represents, how, to 'hear' something, such as music, requires direct, physical contact? Such as Alexander Graham Bell, invented the telephone, in his attempts, to make something, to allow a deaf person, to 'hear' him?

    Why not paint worms slithering through the corpse of a deceased child? Its the same "beautiful" life happens dogma at work. Dzień dobry (good morning in polish). Here's your answer for the question about those innacuracies in terms of dates and details. Matejko was very patriotic, but not especially precise in the matter of when and what something exactly happened, he emphasised much more on the symbolics of specific event he recreated in his paintings than on presenting it the way they really happend. On top of that he was also not educated especially well if it comes to history so he liked to make up things he didn't know or wasn't shure about. The cherry on top might be the fact that he was blind as a pile of shit so I think the simplest answer to your question is : He didn't really care (about the details at least).

  • @dontparticipate240

    It’s not a painting. It is a woodblock print. A very involved process.

    about ophelia ,i think the key word is " abandon".she abandoned herself to her fate.after all her misfortunes and her false attempt at suicide, letting her life ebb and flow with the water, the darkness of the water engulfing her.at least it is a more romantic view than a mere accident.that vacant look could be a sign of fatalism.you make great and well analysed video subjects.

    Sorry but the narration here (unlike your usual fine form) leaves me wanting. If you guys don't know what it is, you shouldn't lead us to believe you do. If datura is native to the Americas, that can't be datura, because the Columbian exchange had not occurred yet. How on earth would that be a fully dressed Eve, observing a fully undressed Adam, slumbering? Where did her clothes come from? And she is wearing quite a full outfit and hairstyle and everything. So, there is no general consensus? On what is happening here? I'm left confused.

    White is symbolic of death in eastern cultures. Blue blue is a color that symbolizes purity, cleanliness, and calmness. it's safe to say these fishermen are dead after this wave hits. Fuji is serene because it is unaffected by death. Things unaffected by death are considered gods.

    Also, prostitution was as common as mud back in the day. Most young working class/impoverished young women "supplemented" their income this way, and it was not at all uncommon for women to be "kept" and actually given a regular allowance. People all up in arms about "Onlyfans" and "women prostituting themselves" but this sort of thing (prostitution/sugar babies) was "a day in the life" for most women who were not rich up until the World Wars.

  • @BabalonNuit
    @BabalonNuit Před 2 dny

    I don't personally believe the scene behind her is a reflection in a mirror. It looks like either a double sided bar or open at the back. The man is standing too close to the woman behind her; if it was a "reflection" he would also be in the picture, with his back to the viewer. She appears to be standing alone, and is clearly tired from a long day at work. For a better idea of how she likely lived, maybe read Colette and her accounts of "life in the theatre/of a working-class woman back in the day".
