    - DIY = do it yourself
    In Japan they have little coin-operated rice milling machine stands available for people who grow their own rice. I'm assuming this is probably more of a rural/semi-rural thing since I doubt people are growing much rice in the cities! If you didn't know, rice comes with shells and then needs to be cleaned before eating. The shells were already removed before this by Jun's grandparents, and we're here to polish them off!

    @RachelandJun  Před 10 lety +93

    I've only been twice, but I'll have to ask Jun! And actually the owner gave us ¥100 that we "forgot" so we ended up getting it cleaned free! ^^
    [By saying we "forgot" the yen she was most likely trying to give us a discount in a way we would have no shame accepting. That's happened to us once before at a cafe we like where they apologized for making our reservation process "difficult" and gave us some free cake. It was Valentine's Day. ^^]

    jeez it's insane to think that at some point a long time ago people were likely doing this by hand or some sort of hand crank machine. I mean if you think about it someone just found rice one day and had to eat it at various stages of it's existence to find the best way/time to eat it. @_@ Humans are so determined.

      @The_Lonely_Texas_Pagan Před 8 lety +28

      +JeanRain17 In the past they started with threshers (not sure of the spelling) where once the rice was cut it would have been laid out on "tarp" or sheet and beaten with wooden poles to get the rice off the stalks. Then you winnow it by tossing it up into the air by a pitch fork like device while the wind is at a certain area, this allows the wind to catch the bugs and most of the loose stalk bits to be blown away while the heavier seeds return to the ground. Next they would beat the rice or later run it over with oxen to break the shell then winnow it again to get rid of the chaff. After that you have raw brown rice.

      +Remakersification that's the main difference between the western diet and eastern diet. we had wheat. they had rice. we started making breads and pasta. Japanese wheat is expensive. so, they produced rice in abundance.

  • @jonadabtheunsightly
    @jonadabtheunsightly Před 5 lety +28

    Interesting. Where I live, brown rice actually costs more than white rice. Not a lot more, but still. (It's economies of scale at work. White rice is shipped around the country by the container load and arrives at the local grocery store by the palette load. Brown rice probably starts out shipping across the country by palette load and arrives at the local grocery store in a box containing maybe a couple dozen bags. Despite this, the brown rice sits on the store shelf longer on average, because way fewer people buy it way less often.)

      +Fluffymiyster very common in rural areas. most of the locals trade, barter or buy rice direct from the farmer. thus directly supporting him. however, the bulk sales are the major money maker.

    This machine took about 5-7 minutes total.

    This is great, in the USA the gov. subsidizes large farms and let the small fend for themselves. In Japan the gov. encourages small growers by subsidizing them to assure a continuation of traditional practices and values. They subsidize MANY efforts to produce traditional goods, Samurai swords, traditional woven bamboo baskets, and almost anything that were made by hand.

    Click "CC" and then you can choose your language there! If for some reason we haven't disabled "automatic captions" don't choose those--CZcams makes those with a computer program and they're always very wrong. XD
