Thanks for watching. This mower was put up for winter storage and now it won't start. The fix was pretty simple. Please consider using non Ethanol gas for your small engines. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Thank you for not blasting music in this video.
No problem
Worked perfectly! I haven’t used my mower in 2 years. I changed the fuel, oil, air filter, spark plug and it still wouldn’t run. I was about to take it to a local shop but luckily found this video first. I clamped the fuel line, removed the bowl, cleaned the o-ring, poked the nozzle with a small gauge wire, put everything back together and it immediately started! Thank you!!!
No problem Tom Russell
where would you find this mowers spark plug? and how much do you gap it?
Man, THANK YOU for this video. I’ve had this lawnmower for about five years; three years ago I watched some obscure video that’s not on CZcams anymore on how to clean a carburetor because mine stopped starting. Fast forward to today, and I just about dislocated my shoulder trying to get the stupid thing to start! Your video was easy to follow and concise, and it fixed my problem perfectly. Thanks again; but the only thing I can do to repay you is subscribe and like…Which I’ve done both!
Thanks for the comment I'm glad it helped out
That was a very informative, well shot and fantastic video. As a tech engineer, I appreciate videos like this.
thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I was on my way to grab a new mower, changed plug, changed oil, and nothing. I've been trying to get this thing to start for weeks now.
Followed your video to the T, and after a couple pulls, BAM easy and on the 1st pull every time since.
A+ sir SALUTE!
Thank you Tim Watson I appreciate your time.
Just wanted you to know that I find your videos both informative and educational. Your camera angle is always good and steady and you have a great voice . Thank you for posting videos that help us average guys.
You are absolutely welcome David Phillips. I appreciate your time and your comments, thank you.
David,
I agree SIR great post
Can this start mower start with the pull cord, no battery
I always mix 2 ounces of Sta-Bil in with the 5 gallons of regular gas for the mowers whenever I fill the container up no matter what season it is. When the mower gets put up for the winter it always gets run dry, I’ve never had any carb issues at all. Pretty easy to do, as per the instructions 1 ounce of Sta-Bil for every 2 1/2 gallons of gas.
nice work. You're ahead of the game. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
it's interesting that many times it seems like a fairly simple fix, yet the machine runs very well.
I just found your channel and they have helped me already, thank you for taking the time to help others
I appreciate it Bert Grau
That mower is a keeper, has a quantum engine on it, one of the best engines briggs has made when it comes to push mowers.
I agree completely with you. Thank you for the comment I appreciate it.
I do use ethanol petrol in my small garden equipment. But, after watching your videos, I have ordered some fuel stabliser as I have been having a few starting problems.
That's a good idea. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Perfect. I followed this very well made and highly instructive video to get my Troybilt mower to start. It worked exactly as explained. The mower started right up just like in the video. Thank you!
Glad it helped
Thanks for
taking your time to post this how-to. It was very clear and after following your lead, the mower’s running great!
no problem and Glad it helped
I just had to say thank you for this video. I just followed your video to the letter and my mower is back!! Thank you again 🙏🏿
Glad I could help!
I just wanted to thank you for the video because I cleaned the gas system like you did and Walla!!! The lawn mower turn on, you save me a lot of money I was about to go and spend the money for new one... Again thanks
no problem I appreciate it.
DUDE YOU SAVED ME!!!!!!! I thought all was lost and I checked the choke on the carburetor and noticed it was open so I changed the switch and voila!!!! ITS RUNNING!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!
no problem and you did a great job
Thanks for the video! Mine wouldn't start after a long winter, and then it started after one pull after following along with your instructions. Appreciate it!
Glad it helped
That was a great fix. I like the Briggs with the jet in the bowl nut, easy to clean, I usually shoot some carb cleaner up the emulsion tube when I have the bowl off. No matter how many times I tell my customers to use non-ethanol gas, they still use regular with ethanol. I have one customer with a JD riding mower and he said," I use high test gas" and I told him that he needs ethanol free gas. Some people just don't get it. But it keeps me busy. Many thanks for the video.
they never learn oh well. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
@@HomeGaragechannel There are no gas stations anywhere near me that sell it, so my only option for going ethanol-free is to buy it at Lowe's. And most people don't want to pay twenty bucks a gallon instead of two.
@@michaelc9672 the other option is to buy the ethanol gas treatment that keep if from going bad. I don't have any problems using ethanol gas just so long as you don't let it sit for too long either.
@@HomeGaragechannel So something like Sta-Bil 360? Always wondered if those actually work. Anyway, I've learned my lesson. From now on I run my engines dry before putting things away for the off-season.
@@michaelc9672 stabil 360 is expensive to only treat 20 gallons but it cheaper than the gas from lowes. Yes running it dry is the best method. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
As a 71 year old female with Parkinson's disease, this was so helpful. I just finished mowing the lawn. Thanks Home Garage. PS: It was the carburetor!
thank you Eileen O'Reilly for the comment.
This was by far the easiest video to follow! Thank you!! Keep doing what you do!
no problem and thank you
Dad used to have an old mower in the 90s. Left it out in the shed through rain and shine. Worked like a charm every time we broke it out. Just got this lawn more and it stopped after 2 goes. Boy, do I love modern technology 🤦🏾♂️
I feel the same way. I do feel more though that the fuel has something to do with it too.
@@HomeGaragechannel Yes, I believe so too, thank you! I just hate that it’s such a hassle haha
Thank you so much for this great explanation. You just saved me having to replace a 10 year old mower that my husband was convinced was dead! It lives to mow another week and hopefully another season!😂
no problem K HM.
Thank you! I was getting so frustrated. Cleaning out the bowl (paper clip) nut was what did it for me.
no problem
mine started right up
many many thanks
I believe this belongs to you 👍
no problem TheGr8Pre10der
Good job as usual just a dirty carb from sitting all winter. We use Ethanol gas and run an additive but the longest a piece of our equipment will sit including winter months is about 6 to 8 weeks at the longest. Have a great week!!!
I will try and thanks for the comment as usual.
I like how Home Garage tested the electric start. Premium, no-ethanol gas. Don't use additives.
I got to try it. If my Honda mower had electric start I would use it every time.
@@HomeGaragechannel Well, have you thought about buying a new Honda mower with electric start and all the features?
@@999thenewman I didn't know they had any.
@@HomeGaragechannel Oh yes, type it into Google. It's an item you can find on the Home Depot website. Search Internet item number 305102925
Super helpful thank you. I had already done the basics air filter and spark plug and it ended up being debris in the bowl nut jet. Cleaned it out now firing up first pull again.
thanks and nice work
Thank you for the video. I learned the hard way that ethanol free gas is the only way to go cost wise.
It sure is. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I recent came up on your channel. Very well made. I love the voice over bc I can hear and understand you and the well shot videos. I'm new to mowers but I understand how things work. And your videos help a lot.
That being said, can you make a video how what to check when buying a used mower? I know what a neglected mower looks like, but I wont be able to tell if people purposefully hide stuff or are lying.
Hmm.. thats a really good idea. I appreciate your time in making this comment and will do my best to fulfill your request. Thank you.
K.
Thank you for your reply on the snapper totally redid carb it runs great. Till he runs out of gas then it totally won't start back up he also took it to a small engine shop got same results. Then he told me he had trouble from day one it's a 7.25 briggs engine
You're welcome. Okay it means its not the carb. I would guess its tank, gas cap, fuel lines or a choke problem.
Fixed my issue on a Toro T360 push mower that refused to start after winter. Thanks much!!
no problem and you did a great job too getting it going again
I use 90 octane ethanol free fuel with seafoam added. Its pricey but the piece of mind is worth it to me.
nice process I would do that if it didn't cost so much. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
Helped save a trash picked mower, thanks HG
No problem
Thanks!!! My mower would not start. Watched this. Waaaaay to complex for me, BUT, you did show me where the carborator is located. So took off the air filter, saw the carb and it opened. The pressure was good, so in my simple mind, I thought WD 40 does everything -- so shot some in there. Boom! started right up. Maybe I'm just lucky. Thanks though for getting me in the right direction!
no problem and thanks for your time.
We always say we wish we had seen the video before going to the auto store! After buying and replacing the spark plug, I saw your vid and there was water in my fuel. Got it going but it’s doing a lot of shaking. We’ll figure that out another day! 😁 I have a TB 200.
I've never tried that, thanks for the tip
I love this video. I use 87 regular for my briggs mower
Me too. I'm too cheap to pay for 91
I use high grade gas only for all my lawn equipment it has saved me a lot of trouble. Also seafoam.
that is a great you method to avoid major problems. thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
well down to the shop to try what I just saw./thank you .hope mine is that easy
good luck
I use regular fuel. Try to fill the tank as low as possible to get the job done. And never get more than a gallon or 2 in the gas can at a time. Cheaper to go get more gas than clean/replace a carb. Drain/run the tank dry at each season for storage.
well said. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
never had a problem with conventional gas but always added an additive and stored the unit dry for storage. Last year I switched all my small engines to racing fuel with no alcohol, it is quiet an improvement albet more expensive to run.
you're the first person that i've heard to use race gas. Nice information. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
Yes I always use ethanol fuel in my 2 stroke lawn boy and never have a problem!
thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Maybe you should consider using non - ethanol fuel
Thank you for your videos.
I think ALL the gas in my area has ethanol in it.
I add "Sta-Bil" to the gas can to "preserve" it.
Perfect that should help out a lot
Nice lil unit.
its not bad. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
Yes, I use 87 octane high-quality ethanol mix gas. By high-quality, I mean Exxon, BP, Shell, and the like. I put Stabil in any gas that will sit for an extended length of time. The varnish and gums that people are finding in the float bowl of engines that have been sitting isn't from ethanol. It's from the gasoline evaporating and leaving deposits. Varnish and gum deposits have been a problem since long before ethanol was added to gas.
Great fix 👍
thanks
You helped me fix my mower! Thanks.
Glad to help
Awesome video, helped me fix my mower despite being a different model
glad it worked out for you
Got the old mower running, thank you
no problem and thank you!
Thank you sooo much very informative easy to understand. Did not need to way on my dear husband to fix it you gained a new subscriber
Glad I could help
Hey HG, do you have any recommendations for a compression tester?
Not really but it would be better of you borrow one from a car friend. That way you don't buy something that you may not need again.
Fabulous diagnosis and repair. I try to use only ethanol free gas I get at a WAWA station about 10 miles away. I also use additives as well. Gonna need to replenish my ethanol free gas now that hurricane season is upon us again. Thanks for the video.
That reminds me I have to get some ethanol free gas soon to. Thanks
Excellent and easy to understand !
Glad you think so!
Great info , thank You for sharing this video 🙏
My pleasure
I own a Troy Bilt mower, and it won't start. I'll have to try this, before I take it to someone else. Our snow blower won't start, unless I use the electric start. And that's after about 6 attempts to start it. Thanks for the video.
no problem and hopefully its works out.
It did the job, thank you!
No problem
Thank you!!
no problem INJURYCOMP
I hate my dad's troy bilt. He's got a TB110. We've replaced the spark plug, carb, ignition coil, ensured everything is properly hooked up and seemingly functioning correctly at the carb. Valves checked out, it's got compression.
I got it to run for a second by dripping a bit of gasoline into the carb intake, which is the first time it's run since 4-5 months ago, but otherwise, simply cannot figure out what the issue is. There is fuel in the carb so it's making it there. The previous carb didn't look bad either. Dad said he was mowing, went inside for a drink, came out 20 minutes later and it wouldn't start anymore.
He's told me it'll be the last gas powered mower he'll ever own. I guess I'm getting it.
it's understandable as for as the issue I'd have to see it in person
Thank you! You saved me a service call. Debris in the jet. Poked it out with a wire. Vrmmmmm!
Glad I could help
Thank you for the video
You're welcome
Thank you so helpful
Glad it helped
Thanks, worked for me!
No problem
I generally don’t use Ethanol gas except during Hurricanes, in my generator, I’ll use 20 or 30 gallons for the duration.
Smalls, very rarely. I like Startron, when I use it, but I think pm is the best bet.
Thank you Jim S for the comment I always appreciate your time.
well done video, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
I like your videos and I one a marry loan more and a Honda hrx 217 loan more and I’m drying to keep up in maintaining
good luck to you, if you have any questions, give me a shout
If my local gas stations would actually offer non-ethanol, I would definitely run that in my equipment. Sadly, I'm stuck with E10 anywhere I go. Even the higher octane fuels around here have ethanol in them, so I can't even resort to them. Sure, there's things like Trufuel, but I just can't personally justify the extra cost vs. taking extra precautions and putting a shutoff valve on anything I won't be using for longer than two weeks.
I understand your situation. You're doing well doing with it. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
I use ethanol gas and stabil. I run the machine out of gas at the end of the season and then pull the starter a couple more times until it won’t start anymore.
excellent technique. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
Should have clean service before put away for winter.. still watching to see if I can follow as a novice, to get mine started.. it did and worked for a whe
Look for “Boat Gas” it has no ethanol in it. It is usually found gas stations that near or at boat ramps. I have found most Raceway stations have it. It is priced between ethanol regular and premium grades. Have not had any problems with starting since using it.
thanks for the information I appreciate it.
Love your videos very helpful any ideas on this one I've worked on a friend of mines mower. Its a snapper after it gets hot it won't start. Any ideas
So does it die when it get or when they stop it when its hot to do something it won't start? If its the second thing then its probably the choke.
This is the second time I've worked on it it runs fine but when he shuts it down to refuel it doesn't start I've replaced everything in the carb he had it to a regular repair shop with the same results he also told me he's had trouble with it since he bought it
Thanks I'll let him know you've been a great help
@@jeffcox2446 you're welcome.
I use E10 unleaded fuel in my old Briggs and Stratton lawnmower which runs the old plastic on tank choke O matic carburetor & the ethanol fuel doesn't hurt it.
Briggs and Stratton doesn't have a rule against using it particularly in plastic carburetor models but Honda rule against using it in their equipment, then again, they use aluminium alloy carburetors on all of their lawnmowers !
That makes sense. Thanks again for the comment.
Very well done and informative video, but I would just say that when a small engine won't start after sitting for an extended period the culprit is almost certainly bad fuel. So why not drain the tank and see if it will run with fresh gas before going to the trouble of taking anything else apart?
That makes sense.
Exactly
Great video
Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
@@HomeGaragechannel literally had a road find tb360 no start the wife brought home yesterday and the bolt was plugged seal was leaking and a snail fell out put it back together and it fired right up
@@MrBlueshark03 excellent work.
What do you recommend to put in petrol
I would suggest almost any additive, seafoam or stabil. There are lots of them so take your pick. Its better than not putting anything in it. I use stabil. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
Premium fuel can be used on small engines?
absolutely but most people don't
What do you do if the carb flap is open you didnt really give any information on the return spring? I'm having that issue. It only starts with starting fluid.
does your flap move, if so, check the spring to see if its still connected. IF it stuck, check the carb for sticky buildup on the shaft, or if the thermostat is stuck in the Forward position
I use E10 10% ethanol gas in mowers with ethanol stabilizer and run dry at end of season
and. E0 (no ethanol) has in 2 cycle with synthetic 2 cycle oil.
And never had a issue .
no problems? that's pretty good. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
I use ethanol gas. I just run the equipment dry and turn off the fuel so it just stays in the tank. Sometimes run the tank dry.
thats a great way to avoid problems.
Where can I get non-ethanol gas? All the gas stations I go to have ethanol in it.
it's usually the small gas stations. They usually have a sign that says they have ethanol free gas.
I am having issues with a bandg engine. Over the winter I did all the PM and it worked just fine. Then I start in the spring and the spark plug shatters. Cleaned that up but still no good. I just get a loud bang but the engine won't turn over. Any suggestions?
what kind of engine is it again? do you have the model and serial number for it?
@@HomeGaragechannel TB230 briggs
did you replace the spark plug recently?
do you have a video on how to adjust the valves on a 4 cylcle weed eater?
Yes I believe so give me a minute.
It's on an edger but most of the process is the same.
czcams.com/video/ZS-XdifIbGQ/video.html
@@HomeGaragechannel thank you verry much!! your videos have help me fix about 7 weed etaers already so thank you verry much and keep posting videos!!
Anything else I could try? Both my dad and me have tried stuff like the sparkplug and the carb and so far it still won't start fresh gas too
what do you mean when you say " like the Carb"? if you mean you tried to Clean it and it didn't work, then I would just replace the carb.
Great video. That hole in the top of that nut...I can"t get any wire through it. The holes on the sides I can see through. How hard do you push? A paper clip just isn't pushing through. Any ideas?
The wire needs to be very very small. I don't have a measurement but a wire twist tie from a loaf of bread should do.
@@HomeGaragechannel Bingo! That was it. I was jamming a thumb tack in there.
@@jasonlara let me know how it goes
@@HomeGaragechannel Well, it started...for two seconds. It does this only after spraying cleaner directly into the air intake (air filter housing off.) I took the muffler off and put it back on (that temperature lever had me take the whole damn cover off!) A bad muffler wouldn't stop it from running, correct? It doesn't have an electric start. I drained the old gas, sprayed cleaner in the tank and put new gas in. Any other recommendations? This machine looks just like yours, but has a "self propel" feature.
@@jasonlara unless the muffler was completely clogged would it stop the engine from starting. At this point I would suggest replacing the carb. It shouldn't be over $15.
Does this take regular 87 gas?
It can but its probably better if its was a higher octane than 87.
Great video ! Thank you. My question is can I use 87 gas in my mower ?
Sure
@@HomeGaragechannel Appreciate it..
all the 87 i know of is an E10 .. the E0 usu. is a higher octane like 88 or 89 ..
so if that 87 has ethanol content, and u dont usu. run the mower 'dry' (which often is very inconvenient for obvious reasons) -- if you install a fuel valve on the fuel line, it makes it easy to turn off the fuel going to the carb and run it dry.. still a pain ...
@@robertshappenings5481 you can 87 even with ethanol. You just can't let sit around unused for more than a week
Hello I noticed the flap is open on my mower carburetor. How do I go about fixing that! Tyia
when you say "flap" do you mean the choke flap? That's the brass flap near the opening of the carb, right behind the air filter? If so, you'll have to take off the plastic engine cover and look to see if something is interfering with the choke system
Yes thank you!
I meant the choke flap
I went on and changed the air filter topped fluids and changed spark plugged and worked. But now the issue is the flap is open again when the lawnmower is off and the muffler gets really hot and it’s now excessively loud of no where.
What kind of oil do I use
Motor oil works fine. Otherwise heavy duty 30w.
what is that you are spraying on stuff
you mean like at time stamp 3:50? thats carb cleaner
I have a troy bilt 21" front wheel drive (12AGB2MT563) but its not starting. When I push the electric start, you can hear the engine kicking in but it wont start the mower. Can you help?
How old is the gasoline in the tank? Have considered that the Carb is the clogged?
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks for reply but I ended up fixing the problem right after posting my comment. I removed the hose from the carb and cleaned the nozzle that the hose attached to. That fixed the problem! 🙂
good work
I use ethanol gas, I run the highest octane possible (Premium) and with additives
That sounds perfect. Thank you
i use ethanol fuel because there are no stations in a short radius...
regardless have only had a problem one year we had a long winter, had to prime it prior to getting her running again.. no problem.. plus the new carbs take even less time than the old ones to clean.
very true.
You made it home
Yes I did
You got a fix for a "key start" mower that has no keys? Can still start with pull rope but it'll be cool to start with key again
no videos on it, most people don't seem to really care, is your battery holding a charge?
@@HomeGaragechannel i don't know. a friend is asking for help. I figured I'd ask around
Those air filters were so cheap from China on EBay..but since covid there gone up in price quite a bit !
yes they have
My daughter is staying with a girl and we tried to mow her grass today (has been raining so much, has been hard to do). Anyway, the holder for the air filter is missing (air filter as well), white stuff on the end of rhe spark plug (the boot part you put on plug) and since we added gas, it won't stay running. It has a mulching bag (we emptied it out and scraped the grass off the bottom). It doesn't have a primer button (unless the red handle is it) and it won't stay running now... Suggestions? I have no idea when it was last serviced.
I wouldn't run it without an air filter, because stuff might get in the engine. As for why it won't stay running, there could be water in the gas, or the carb could have a clog in and would need to be cleaned and cleared.
@@HomeGaragechannel I have to check it out more. It isn't mine, but helping new roommates out. Have to find replacements for it. It ran for a good while, now it won't run for more than a few seconds.
let me know when you find out.
@@HomeGaragechannel Will do.

sure, did you look at the edge of the blade for a gouge? they might have hit something hard, and partially sheared the flywheel key, that would very slightly advance the ignition timing causing the back fire.
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks I checked it the key looks ok but maybe that’s the prob . Couldn’t get the flywheel to pop off I’ll have to get it off to further inspect the key your the best

@@HomeGaragechannel fair enough.

@@HomeGaragechannel so I’m a moron and it’s the throttle body. No choke on my mower. Gonna buy a new carb and hope for the best lol
I found out that the modern Troy-Bilt mowers have a rusting problem, people have reported their mower decks rusting out in less than two years. That is one reason why I don’t like these mowers
Sometime people mow when the grass is damp and that will make them rust out even faster.
I cant pull the cord on my tb160 does anybody know how to start it wtf it shouldn’t be this hadd
remove the spark plug and try pulling the rope, if it won't move, then your engine might be stuck. Have you also checked the oil?
@@HomeGaragechannel wow thanks for the quick reply. Apparently I had to unscrew the handle and pull it out and screw it back in. Didn’t see that in the instructions at all
@@antoniown that makes sense
i cleaned the heck out of the carb .. no go .. after watching this .. the all important wire in the jet is i didnt do .. what i forgot to check was ability to see light through even the bottom of the jet then stick the wire through the top to see if its going through ( usu. a pretty think SS wire ) ... and that is the whole crux of the thing .. that tiny orifice takes a mechanical cleaning to get the build up ethanol by-product out , peeps in o hurry to get to job dont usu have time to get ' non-ethanol ' gas .. (E0) , not to mention i can only think of 1 or 2 places that carry it and it is a premium price ..
It's rare to have a station that has ethanol free gas. I'm sure one day, I won't a station to go to anymore either.
@@HomeGaragechannel i'm sure if idiots who drafted the 'cash for clunkers' bill had their way whey would do that ...
well, there was something stuck in that vertical jet , i did drill it out .. the thing ran a bit .. i noticed gas coming out of the tank had a kind of murky look .. i am suspect something is in the tank .. there was a little water in the bowl, its ez to see it at the bottom of the gas as they seperate .. so it runs but then after about 30 seconds it dies ...
i dont think the float valve is fully sealing as there is a slow leak over time .. (gas tank always empty) -- should be a fuel valve on every one of these .. why make a several $ hundreds thing and not put a basic unit like that on it ? planned obselesence ?
