    I think Wednesday's dance fit her in that it showed how little she cares about what people think of her. Most folks would either dance more normally or not dance at all if they feel self-conscious. Wednesday, on the other hand, just did exactly what she wanted to do.
    She mentioned at another point in the series that she likes to dance, so her doing all those weird dance moves, without caring what those around her were doing, actually fits her character pretty well.

    • @kaitlinannwright24
      @kaitlinannwright24 Před rokem +58

      Plus, dancing has always been a part of the Addams Family in other iterations. Like, you can't tell me that Wednesday didn't pull out those moves during their family dance sessions while her parents did some dramatic tango and Lurch played the harpsichord. I just got the feeling that's what she thinks dancing is 😅 Or that even if she knows it's different, she doesn't care. She learned from her parents that doing crazy dances that make people stare at you is the Addams Family way

    • @Ylyrra
      @Ylyrra Před rokem +29

      It's more than just how little she cares about what people think, it's not caring about whether it fits in with "her image" too. "Her image" is itself a thing that other people project onto her, not her actual identity, and she won't let that stop her being her.

    My two biggest problems were how contradictory Wednesday was written, ie being upset she'd have attempted murder on her rap sheet cause it showed she failed, but being upset Gomez might be a murderer. The second was the fact none of the Addams felt like the Addams family outside sometimes Wednesday. For example, Gomez and Morticia should have had at least a little chemistry, Pugsley gets tortured for fun but cries from being in a locker, Wednesday never hated her family but despises her mother and threatens to break Thing's fingers. Jenna was perfectly cast, and the rest of the cast was good on paper, just lacked chemistry and writing that was cohesive.

I've seen a lot of people say she was annoying and cringy but since her and Wednesday are supposed to be complete opposites and Wednesday is so far into the macabre and murder and stuff, Enid is supposed to far into her bubbly, colorful, etc side. Plus, the way the actress delivers the lines so naturally (because this is just who Enid is) makes me feel like it's not so bad. I loved her mannerisms and vocabulary. How she basically never stopped moving, was overly emotional (A complete contrast to Wednesday yet again) and everytime she talked her voice had so much personality and intonation to it. I just didn't particularly like the way Wednesday acted towards Morticia. I get that she's a moody teen and that she doesn't want to be stuck in her mom's shadow (honestly a good source of angst for her character) but sometimes she was just mean. The core of the Addams family is that even though they're all weird, they're an extremely close and loving family. It was always important to show them as being the most well-adjusted family despite the obsession with the macabre. I felt like she hated her mom during some parts and that is just so anti-Addams Family to me. I think that's why I didn't like adult Morticia very much in this. I like Catherine Zeta-Jones, but something about her portrayal of Tish rubbed me the wrong way. While the first season was solid&intriguing and i'm very curious to see where they move the story next, there are definitely some mighty-frustrating things about it. One of them being that yes, Wednesday repeatedly shows to people that their value to her is purely utilitarian - they're tools that she uses to get to her objectives. And yet, people keep flocking around her and tolerating her either complete indifference or, in some cases, outright toxicity.
    The worst example of this has to be Enid coming back to be roommates with Wednesday. That was, IMO, absolutely terrible, like, look at the events up to this point.
    Enid gets annoyed with Wednesday after the birthday party, gets a glimpse of Wednedsay maybe-sorta apologizing, goes along with it only to find out that it was Wednesday manipulating her into helping her solve the murders, and now putting her in grave danger, and then proceeding to feel no remorse over it. That, extremely justifiably, causes Enid to snap, blow up in Wednesday's face and move out. And we're distinctly shown that Wednesday does actually miss Enid being around. What a wonderful set up for her to actually take a first step, put herself out there and do at least *something* resembling an apology. Like returning that vial she found, which i thought was an obvious set up. It didn't have to be much, just something Enid could see as a sign that Wednesday is trying to do better.
    Instead, n-n-nope, Enid just comes back and proclaims "we work" on zero basis whatsoever, and the conflict is pushed into the background in an unresolved state. We get no apology or even an acknowledgement from Wednesday that she did something wrong, and Enid seems fine with a high-ass risk of getting manipulated and put in danger all over again.

      On that note: what was with the photos in the music box? Some of the photos were of Wednesday, Enid, and Tyler arriving at the house so.... Thornhill took photos of them arriving for... reasons... then immediate hid them in the music box and ran away again so that Tyler could Hulk out and.....? Also what was the point of Tyler showing up occasionally as a Hyde but then not actually trying to kill Wednesday? Was it to scare her? They needed her to resurrect the big bad, but she didn't need to be alive for that. Was Thornhill just really lucky that Wednesday was sent to Nevermore... was she just going to be a regular teacher forever on the off-chance an Addams would show up eventually? And why was Ye Olde Pilgrim Mass Murderer a wizard at the end? Isn't he supposed to hate magic? Why is he magic? Was he secretly an outcast? Why is he murdering them all then?

Side note, I think Jenna is against the romance too, (or at least the love triangle, but maybe all of it?). But I hope they keep Wednesday single.

One has to have a crush on the other, or they're exes, or tgey end up together. With Enid and Wednesday, I'd prefer for them to be in a relationship because of their tropes and chemistry, plus the fact that Enid is the only person Wednesday listens to and she ,are her actually feel something. Personally for me, I've always watched tv shows with girls best friends in which I've thought they'd be a much better couple bc of the way they act around and treat each other, and that's how I feel about Wenclair.

      Completely agree with this take. My least favorite thing is how female protagonists always have to have love interests. Honestly any gender protagonist. Let's just make them single, maybe aro or ace. To me it's just the laziest form of writing because it takes away from the richness of a character, leading to them only experiencing conflict and growth based on another person. They go from a character with complicated emotions, to a character whose emotions get complicated by another person. And then the show only focuses on that aspect of the character. Plus to keep the romance interesting they usually have to make it toxic af so it doesn't bore an audience. I also think platonic love is such an important dynamic in the human experience, wish it was given the same amount of time beyond catty frenemy or rom com "let's generalize about men" between women.

Wednesday's uniqueness allows a lot of interesting opportunities to explore or deconstruct relationships. I would be a shame to see it fall back on old overused tropes.

    • @katharineeavan9705

      Honestly, I kinda saw Wednesday as a grey asexual aromantic in the Ricci portrayal. The whole thing of her being more fascinated than attracted to the one person we see her show interest in, and as soon as he implies he'd like something more romantic than the odd kiss in their relationship, she shuts him down completely and tells him she'd never get married, would pity anyone who fell in love with her, and would murder anyone who attempted a romantic relationship with her. Like, she was young, but it still sets a lot more groundwork for an ace spectrum reading than a heterosexual, alloromantic one.
      That was actually one of the things I did think the show did quite well for the most part. I liked her and Tyler's dynamic partially because it wasn't exactly overwhelming lust and infatuation from her end. She liked him, got along with him and wasn't repulsed by the idea of a relationship with him, but she wasn't exactly enthusiastic about it and it almost seemed like she was more trying out that kinda thing with him out of curiosity and a little bit as a way to punish Xavier for "being the monster" and for pursuing her when she clearly wasn't into him. They could've made a cute non-traditional couple somewhere in between friends and lovers if they'd have gone with him being unaware of what he was
      Unfortunately, they definitely set the tropey groundwork for a long game Wednesday/Xavier thing and I am sooooo not a fan.

I got so annoyed at the other flirtations from the boys/love interests bc she don't fit with any of them. They fit as her friends, nothing else. The writers should've kept her single and not flirting with anyone, just let her have them as friends.

      Yeah agreed. For every version of Wednesday I've seen so far (besides this Netflix one, of course), she's always been disinterested in romantic relationships. She's more interested in harming others thinking it's a fun game (that's her thing to show she likes you sometimes, i guess). Having her flirt, unless it was a con to get something she wanted, is completely out of character for her. And even if she _did_ do it, that would probably be the last resort type of thing because nothing else works. (If you've watched Grim adventures of billy and Mandy, I'm thinking of that one episode where Mandy got all done up just to get over her emotions she had for a "cool boy")

    Loved the show, but my biggest frustration was the connection between Morticia and Goody Addams. We've established that the visions are hereditary (passed down from Morticia to Wednesday), but also that Goody Addams - who has no relation to Morticia Frump, is kind of like a spirit guide for the Addams Family women. It's never explicitly stated that Goody taught Morticia about controlling her visions, but it's implied that Morticia and Goody have some extra connection. It would have been more believable and better if they had just made Goody a Frump instead of Addams.
