    Hey Nev. I am a 2nd year novice. This season I made it through to the final of our Division Novice Singles. I was so nervous before the game and another experienced bowler gave me the advice that nerves are good. So I simply accepted that I was nervous and changed my belief from nerves being a bad thing to a new belief that they were going to help me through the game. It was the best game I have ever played to date. My opposition was on her top game too. It was literally bowl for bowl, the crowd was cheering us both the whole way through, until the last end my fatigue set in and I ended up being runner up. The whole way through the game I just kept focusing on the fact that I only had to beat the oppositions closest bowl. It was quite funny because neither of us were worrying about the kitty, we were both just trying to beat each other's closest bowl. I was happy that my opposition ended up winning the Region after that and went on to play state. I still have future goals to achieve in the game of bowls. Thanks for your tips because they have helped my game.

    Good preparation works well for me; I usually play lead so I watch your video on ‘Delivering the bowl’ followed by your superior ‘Shooter stance’ video, that gives me focus on the key points to play well and it works brilliantly every time. In addition I think it’s really important to eat well, protein and carbs the day of a match and to be well hydrated. Warm up exercises are great too and any form of relaxation. It’s important to feel relaxed and confident so good preparation is essential. Thanks for all your great tips especially this one on metal toughness. Positive self talk and to R.E,L.A.X. Boom! It works for me every time!

      You nailed it! Relaxation is a big part of it... and in order to get relaxed, if wound up - you have to do exercises and whatever it takes to get back into that relaxed state. Great to hear AngelH. :)

    My mental tip early/mid march in singles is to reassure myself worst I can do is lose a 4 and go start turning that deficit into a shots gain. Lunacy I know.

    Great to see you back!
    I’ve always used visualisation , I used to play very competitive sport and used to visualise myself in certain scenarios and how I would react.
    But it would be in very fine detail, what could I smell, the feeling of the sweat, my raised hart beat etc
    I felt the brain, like when you are dreaming , finds it hard to distinguish between what’s real and what is not. When I was put in a tense high pressure situation I found I coped well as my brain felt like it had been in that situation before !
    Worked for me!

      @NevRodda  Před 4 lety

      Cheers Pete!! Good to be back. In regards to your visualisations, ul find every great sportsman goes through a similar process. F1 drivers especially. I remember reading a book about a prison inmate that spent years visualising his golf game - to then go out when released to play he’s first round in single figures. I think it was n early 90’s tony robbins book. Anyhow it works for sure, keep doing it 👏👏

      @@NevRodda from what I’ve gathered from sports psychologists, the brain cannot distinguish between actual physical practice and mental rehearsal. So repeatedly visualising the perfect execution of a shot whenever you have some downtime can be hugely effective.

    great video's Nev, very helpful. I'm bowling with a set of Aero Optima's 3.5 heavy. they struggle on a heavy green but with the right weight are the most accurate bowl I've used. Talking about line, that hugging the bowl is something that I try to implement as part of the process. Lastly cocking my wrist before and during delivery guarantees getting the bowl on the best running surface. It might feel strange at first but it's very useful.

    I am a first year bowler and since viewing all your videos (over and over) things are starting to click. The defining moments were firstly the grip, secondly the shooters stance and thirdly the delivery. My bowls have just gone from strength to strength to the point I am consistently getting my weight and line right on. People are now calling me to be lead in their teams. Nev can i just say to people like me (beginners) get a routine and never deviate. As long as what you are doing is right you cannot go wrong. Its helped me so much. Derrick Hodgson NZ

    I find breathing techniques terrific, but I also hum (inaudibly most of the time, so I guess I pretend to hum) during delivery. I got this from the best book I've ever read on the mental approach to sport - Timothy Gallwey's "The Inner Game of Golf". I highly recommend it. If you practice the techniques in that book as you practice bowls, you can't help but improve. Oh, and I've just made my first club championship singles final after bowling for just over 2 years.

      Wow. Congratulations Bob. That’s a massive achievement in two short years. 👏👏 yes agreed on the breathing. That humming reminds me of harmonic resonance - I’ve practised similar exercises in meditation but never while playing bowls. Sweet tip!!

    G'day Nev, I've been playing bowls for 10 days now. I was fairly proficient at 9-ball pool and a lot of the advice here works in 9-ball as well.
    You conceptualise the shot. Then you visualise. Then you execute.
    Only difference is I don't yet have the technique required to be a good bowler.
    I do have a question which I want to discuss - is it important to understand which eye is your most dominant in bowls? I found a massive leap in terms of consistency when I had worked this out, but of course 9ball pool is played over 2.7 metres with 2 1/4" balls, not 5" bowls that weigh 3lbs+
    Cheers, from a pom 😁

    • @Tasmanaut
      @Tasmanaut Před rokem

      eye dominance isn't really important at all in bowls. Natural variation of the green and the distance to the jack would circumvent any difference it would make

      When you eventually get control of the mat move it and change the length of the jack from whatever length the opposition was winning at..moving the mat changes the aim point, not all players are tooled up to cope with it..if its a team game you will upset someone on the opposition...in short find their weakness.

    If you’re thinking “I can do this,” you’re probably right.
    If you’re thinking “I can’t do this,” you’re also probably right.
    Your internal state can effect your posture, so someone in a positive mental state will have a different posture to someone in a negative mental state. We see this all the time - confident people stand and move is a different way to those who are not.
    The reverse is also true. Adopting the correct posture can induce a positive mental state.
    And trust the process. Don’t consciously try to micromanage your technique in moments of pressure, leave that to the subconscious to deliver. If you’ve done the work then the subconscious knows what to do.
    It may be difficult because you can be in a situation that you’ve never been in before (and may never be in again) so the fear of the unknown kicks in - but repeated mental rehearsal and “training with jeopardy/reward” may help.
