North Pennine wild camp on England's highest mountain outside the Lake District.

- This was a trip that I've had in my mind for a long time, a wild camp on the highest of the Pennines and England's highest outside the Lake District (also England's 8th highest....observing the Wainwright guides). This particular mountain has always been kind to me on past visits. Would it be this time?

Beautiful scenery. That hare hopping toward you made me laugh - wondered if you were under attack, like Monty Python rabbits! so big. We have snowshoe hares where I live, but they aren't usually that large. Love seeing all the flowers.

It's a lovely mountain and the Vue is fantastic. I'm not a walker has such. I used to repair walls in the area. I'm retired now. I watch the likes of you trapesing upwards. I used to walk miles to repair gaps mainly on Boundaries. All weather's good and bad conditions.
Yes, I'm a big fan of Cross Fell and have a lot of good memories of it. I bet you would appreciate the massive wind shelter on the summit which looks like a dry-stone wall type construction. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. 👍

Brilliant! It's a special and underrated bit of England and well worth the effort to go and see. Love the gas cylinder mishap; I've done similar with the old ones that you puncture and seal to the stove, but I was smoking a cigarette too, in the days when I was a lot younger and dafter...
I really like the North Pennines Oliver, probably the best place in England to really 'get away from it all'. Re' the gas stove, my trips are usually a litany of similar mishaps. I certainly wouldn't've been trusted with those old stoves. Thanks for watching pal, hope you are well. Cheers, Chris
Well enjoyed my hike, brought way too much gear will go lighter next time.. thought I had a nice pitch but had lumps of grass under tent... How do you get comfy on the lumpy moor ? Had a roll mat but didn't seem to do much.. Weather was very misty Sunday morning = Loads of condensation 👍
@@trigpointvinnie Nice one Vinny. With each trip you'll slim down what you take until you get it to just what makes you comfortable. To be honest roll mats are okay but on lumpy ground, not the most comfortable. Inflatable mats are better at soaking up lumps but can cost more.
Enjoyed revisiting this one Chis. I never have problems with my BeFree. I just swish it in water prior to a camp. That said you do a few peaty camps. Love how you let a a pint of gas out when screwing on the canister😂 It’s good to see it’s not just me that does stuff like that. Love that area. I was up High cup last Monday was going to camp but the winds were high. Tent would have coped but it would have been a restless night. Atb mate looking forward to your next.
How do UP. I've started storing my BeFree in a jam jar of weak bleach and water solution which works a treat. Saying that, I've recently bought a Platypus Quick Draw but I'm still not sure about it yet.
The amount of balls-ups that don't make it to my films is staggering....I'm proper gormless. So much so, my dear ol' ma used to call me Frank Spencer 😉.
I've just got back from a camp last night, I finally got round to completing the Dales 30 on Darnbrook Fell.

Tha's been lucky with weather up there then Chris if it's always been sunny.. I did cross fell in clagg, did Greg's hut in clagg & spent the night there nice little place.. Such a nice remote feel to the area up there too which is great..hsve you sorted the BeFree out.. Had mine go like that I contacted katadyn & solution is to soak filter in hot water with a squirt of bleach or the Milton stuff.. Something to do with the water residue crystallising in the fibres when it goes dry & won't allow water to pass through.. The bleach dissolves that then it's good to go againn. Had to do it several times now..tfs mate Andy.
Aye, I've been a bit jammy with the weather on Cross Fell 😎 . Under different circumstances I might've been tempted to stay at Greg's Hut Andy, as it would be my first night in a bothy. Maybe next time. Thanks, yes, the BeFree seems okay now. I did exactly what you described with some dilute bleach. Great Videos, my first wild camp coming up this weekend, keeping it local between Blackstone & Stoodley before I get more adventurous...Weather not great but on the plus side it wont be as busy...Fingers Crossed 👍
Thanks Vinnie. You've made a good choice there. Blackstone Edge itself is a great location, especially on the quieter eastern side overlooking Green Withens Res'. I bet you were. I'd love to see a Pennine golden eagle. I've seen them up Scotland and in the Lakes when they used to be there. 🙂🦅
@@ChrisJB I reckon it was just passing and no doubt they can cover some miles looking for food . I went back up to cross fell the next day with high hopes but nothing and would be lucky to see one again up there

Loved all the cotton grass too, and a nice bothy, really well looked aftergood to see a visitor book too. Hello you two. As a bit of a Tolkein fan I often like to draw parallels from LOTR, etc......even when they don't exist🙄🙂 ! I often portray Cross Fell as a bit of a beast but the route I took isn't bad at all. I suppose another kindly weather experience made a difference. The morning after was quite a shock. Well done Chris. That looks a great place to camp. I drove beneath Cross Fell along the A66 on my home from the Lakes. It looks an impressive and intimidating mountain from there. I must admit that this is the one part of the Pennine Way that makes me hope for good weather on the day I walk it. I imagine it could be brutal up there in bad weather. Enjoyed watching as always
Thanks Anthony. I always build Cross Fell up to be a bit of a beast in my mind but maybe because I've been lucky with the weather, I have always found it quite benign and especially on this route, in the main it is mostly a long and quite easy plod. Dufton to Alston, taking in CF really is a great section of the PW and I hope you get decent weather for it too so you can really enjoy its merits. Best wishes, Chris
Hi Chris, a very interesting video and its amazing how much closer to somewhere when you have spent the night there. I haven't been on Cross Fell as on my Pennine way walk I missed it out due to high winds. When in the lakes the other week I saw an Orchid called a Bee Orchid I think and I thought you would have been interested in that.

What a shame you missed Cross Fell Dave. What route did you take instead? Saying that, when I did the PW, Cross Fell was the only place I managed to go astray....in perfectly clear conditions 🙄. I hope you get the chance to do it sometime. This route is quite easy really. Well done on the bee orchid. When I first started taking an interest in flowers, I was desperate to see a bee orchid. I eventually saw my first in Millers Dale in the Peak District. I was chuffed to bits. Best wishes pal. Chris 🍻
@@ChrisJB I stopped in a Hotel in Middleton with the Mrs the night before and as I had previously hiked up to Cow green res I got Helen to drop me in Garragill. I just didnt fancy the strong winds that day.👍

Great vid Chris, i was up there a few month ago but never camped up there. my filter goes to a bad flow rate if i let it go dry for a bit, seems to pick up after it soaks for a while,

How do Mark. Thanks for watching and the nice comment. Interesting about the filter as I always let it dry out before putting it away. Perhaps I should re-hydrate it first before setting off? Nice one Chris, enjoyed that even if the weather didn't quite work out for you. Cross Fell is on my to do list as I'm keen to find out which bothy is higher Greg's Hut or the Hutchy Hut in the Cairngorms. I'd do my own GPS measurement. 😁
Just checked on the Greg's Hut website, which calls it the 'highest in England' only. Boo 😉 ! I've never stayed in a bothy but would really like to. I find it strange that I have quite an attachment to this pudding-bowl shaped high blob. It can only be the memories down the years . Thanks for watching pal. Cheers, Chris

How do Dave. Yes, you are spoilt for choice with pitches really, if you can avoid the stony bits. Also, you can can get water much higher at Greg's Hut, where it comes out of a pipe near the bothy. Very handy. Hope you make it up there sometime. ATB, Chris 👍

This is a bold claim but I think Cross Fell is my favourite mountain in England and Wales. It is such a beast! I would love to try Greg's Hut for an overnighter sometime.

Not exactly luxury hotel standard for the cottage stop over accommodation, or was that a visit? Like yourself, Michael is very much into Geology. Often find the Weather forecasts unreliable. Hello Shanita. Cross Fell often gets overlooked as it is not as rugged as the Lakeland Fells, which is a shame as it offers far more solitude than those, which I what I tend to seek. Yes, the bothy was rather basic but I am of the mind that I may make the effort to stay overnight there sometime 🙂. As for the geology, it is what I studied at university. Disappointingly, I never made a career from it but I still take an interest. Best wishes, Chris
Nice one Chris, I think that was the morning I passed you on the way back from the Lakes. It had been really good the night before but was pretty bleak in the morning, it looked a bit grim up there as I passed. I thought I was nailed on going to get a decent sunset and it just dissolved about an hour before it was due. Can't win em all 🙂
