From personal experience, here is my advice: If you have money to loan a loved one, give it as a gift and don’t ask for it back. Tell them to use it however they need it and put the whole thing to bed then and there. I promise you’ll be happier.

I had a friend who let his brother in law borrow $500.
One day he needed the money back and he asked him and he responded back with such a nasty attitude telling him he didn’t have it yet.
He told me that like a couple of months passed and his brother in law had won some money at the casino. He went to his house and asked him nicely for his money back.
His brother in law went back inside, grabbed the money and yelled “here’s your money!!!” And threw the money in his face.
It made me laugh because my friend is so chill and problem free that he just picked up the money and went home 😂

I had similar encounter. Many years ago my friend was in a pinch and asked me to lend her money. I did,she said she'll pay me back in two days.
More than a week passed,I had an emergency dentist appointment. (my wisdom tooth decided to start growing and not in the right angle, giving me a headache of a lifetime) It was a week till a payday still and I didn't know how much the visit will cost me,so I asked my friend politely if she can pay me back now. Few hours later her husband came in to the store I worked in,slammed the money on the counter and walked away without a word. I didn't said anything to them or to our friends about their behavior but since then I don't lend money to anyone.

@@jessediaz1293 Right? If she said she'll pay me back in few weeks I wouldn't even ask if she can give me back my money now. But she's said two days and whole week has passed. It's not like I was harassing her about the money either. It was over the date she said she'll pay me back and she knew I had to go to dental surgeon to get my tooth removed. The saying is true as it turns out,if you want to lose friends, lend them money.

      @Xylarxcode Před měsícem +2

Damn. Stories like these makes one appreciate having friends that don't make a big fuss over lending each other money. I've lent my buddies cash and they always returned it without me having to ask and vice versa. Same with my brother. In his 20's, he was often in financial trouble and I would lend him money to bail him out and he always found a way to pay me back in time and without me having to ask. He's become much more responsible with his money since then, but he never tried to worm out of a debt he owed either.
Once, when I was moving, I was having cashflow problems of my own and he bailed me out, no questions asked. I returned the money to him 2 weeks later and he never had to ask. That's how it's supposed to be. Borrowing money can be a sensitive issue, but when both sides work together nicely, it doesn't have to be such a big deal. Too bad some people just don't seem to understand that what is owed must be returned in proper time. It's a loan, not a gift.

In most cases you don't loan money to friends and family, you give it to them so this is not a issue. If you can't afford it, don't do it and if you do it, don't do it as a loan. You buy gifts for family during the holidays but don't expect the money you spent on them back, so treat it the same way. Only give what you can afford.

If you have watched the series you know that Robert is the black sheep in the family. That is saying something since Raymond isn't all the special among men. But he is doing way better in life than Robert, the time he is given a cheque for a 1000 dollars it sets up a lot of funny dialogue and interactions throughout the episode. by the end of the episode Robert tells Raymond that he needs a break from his life which is filled with struggles and disappointments. I can understand why he then choose to go to Vagas instead of being wise. But nonetheless any time anyone gives money to a family member it should be a principle to not expect the money back or be angry in the way they spent it. It makes your life happy and I would just alter the degree at which I would bend over to help that person if they showed a tremendous lack of wisdom when given money. All of this is to say is that family is more important and our principles are sometimes put to the side in order to protect and support them.

This episode never made sense to me. Robert legit lived at home for 10+ years paying no rent/bills working full time as a Sargent In the NYPD with likely good overtime/benefits. Didn’t have a fancy apartment nor had much of a life outside hanging out with his family. How was he struggling financially? Let’s not forget Robert had to lend Ray money when Ray wanted to take over the bills and screwed everything up early in the show

Am I the only one that thinks Robert is actually worse than Raymond? A few examples:
    - He accuses Ray of never wanting him to be happy but yet he practically gives himself an ulcer whenever something good happens to Ray (getting married, having kids, etc.)
    - He goes BEYOND sibling envy and into straight up "I wish my sibling was misrable/dead" territory
    - He constantly belittles Ray's job until he can benefit from it
    - He actively seeks out anyone else who has just one negative thought about Ray and tries to befriend them
    - He's constantly criticizing Ray's status as a dad and a husband despite Robert having one failed marriage, no kids and took forever to get his head out of his ass and marry Amy
And, this is just me, but I'm 100% sure he has been fooling around with Debrah behind Ray's back because who the hell is that chummy with their sibling-in-law?

I disagree. Robert put on a whole act about being poor and Ray/Deb help him and he decides to spend it on a luxurious vacation. It was a manipulation. Ray was nice compared to how I would have reacted.
