A bit biased as a Fulham fan, but Johnny Haynes. First £100 a week player, Pele called him the finest passer of the football he'd ever seen, but unfortunately missed the '66 World Cup due to injuries from a car accident.

Biased as an Everton fan, but Alan Ball was one of England's greatest ever midfielders and barely gets a shout outside of Merseyside these days. Dixie Dean is another no-brainer, still holding the first division single-season goal scoring record (60) and all time record (313)

Never knew about him to be honest. As a Latin American we don't get so much coverage from these high quality players of old, much less if they're pre WW2 players. It makes you question what would have been of many of football stars back then if the war didn't happen. Who knows, but anyways, great content as always. You should intercalate between a Latin and an European player/content. Keep it up uMaxit! (Oh god this is going to look terrible when you change your name) Revolutionizing the way we consume football content.

Matthews was the first player to be world famous and was a huge star. Although Tom Finney was just as good a player Matthews flashier style made him a greater idol to the masses and he dominated English football in three decades.
He was still a great player in his 40s but while there isn't much footage of him from the 1930s what there is shows that his legendary skills were then combined with terrifying pace.
This is the best skills vid of him compiled from surviving footage that I've seen: czcams.com/video/lOGNXuie5IQ/video.html

You couldn't get the ball off Sir Stanley. He would take it to the touchline every time without fail.
He always said, that if you pass from the touchline, you'll never be given offside.
I'd guess he had twice as many assists than any other player.
Brazil had a brilliant team in 1956, but Matthews just schooled them. And Pele said he was the first modern player.
So yes, one of the greatest.

If all this old generation players had the technology currently, they would be miles ahead of this generation's football.
Players played for the passion of the game and the money was just a bonus.
Back then World class players were spread around the world not like currently where the best players are only in the best clubs.

"Albin Lundholm what I mean is that even the average teams had one or two world class players, which made the matches unpredictable."
Yes, I think this is a good thing. I think the ease with which clubs buy players from all over the world, while initially exciting, does detract from the spectacle of seeing amazing players rise up at unglamorous clubs.
If Matthews were playing today, he'd have been off to Madrid at 21, played too many games, got injured, then got sold to Palermo and never been heard from again!
