Produced by Tom Hanks, written by Aaron Sorkin, and directed by Mike Nichols, this adaptation of George Crile III's incendiary bestseller tells the remarkable story of the Texas congressman whose efforts to prevent the Red Army from overtaking Afghanistan eventually led to the collapse of the Soviet Union while simultaneously fueling the rise of radical Islam. In the early 1980s, a hastily assembled army of Afghan "freedom fighters" achieved the remarkable feat of fending off Soviet invaders despite the fact that the odds were overwhelmingly stacked against them. At the time, Texas congressman Charlie Wilson (Hanks) was a key member of the hugely powerful House Appropriations Committee. Illuminated to the specifics of this remarkable war by a high-profile Houston socialite, Wilson spearheaded an effort to provide hundreds of millions of dollars in weapons and training to the Mujahideen with more than a little help from brilliant but prickly CIA operative Gust Avrokotos.

A highly underrated movie. Not quite the same Republican party running things now. They have become Dump cultists and Q crack pots. Ronald Reagan is spinning like a top at these delusional imbeciles.
My favorite line is right before this scene, when Wilson asks about the U.S. polic yin Afghanistan and Gust says "Strictly speaking, we don't have one, sir, but we're working hard on that." "Who's 'we'?" "Me and three other guys."

The zenmaster and the little boy callback at the end is brilliant. This is a gem.

Tom Hanks is such an amazing, iconic actor, and nearly everything he's been in has been nothing short of gold. Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, The Green Mile, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Captain Phillips, Philadelphia, and even his voice work as Woody in Toy Story is spectacular. There are very few actors who can match his skill, that's for damn sure.
Then stay away from 'Joe Vs. the Volcano.' Yucko.
You didn't mention Road to Perdition, which I think is notoriously overlooked as one of his best performances.
And yet PSH steals this scene with ease.

I literally watched this movie because of Gus, such a tiny role but YOU CAN'T TAKE AWAY YOUR EYES from this guy, the look the talk, the mimics...perfect character to contrast Charlie

A very underrated film. Great chemistry between Hoffman and Hanks.
I have a theory that the whole moment was a short con to get a drink. Of course he was listening through the door but, in an inspired moment of brilliance, tells him instead that he bugged the bottle. Charlie, being Charlie, will inevitably ask him to crack the seal to remove it. Grab glasses, pour ... and get passed it.
