  • This is the first episode of The Century Series, a multi-episode project which examines some of the music and social trends on the 1920s. For this first episode, I wanted to present the 20 most popular songs of 1920 in order to show what kind of music was commercially popular at that time.

I cannot get enough of this stuff.
This early music was the best and had enormous influence on what followed.
    Thank you so much!

    Very interesting.
These folks had survived the Great Pandemic and were certainly in the mood to celebrate (understandably).

It's an interesting and slightly eery similarly between 1920 and 2020. One saw the start of a pandemic while the other saw the end of a pandemic. It seems like there was a newfound energy in the early 1920s with it being the post-WWI era.

    Hey Nathanial,
Love the fact that someone as young as you are is not only AWARE of this type of music, but seems to appreciate it as well!! It gives me hope that music from the past will still live on for future generations! Most millennials and such seem to have no knowledge of anything other than "Rappers and Rap" music, which is a shame. There's so many beautiful and melodic songs from way back that still are great to hear/dance to today! Anyways..... could you tell me if there's a "complete" version of Hoagy Carmichaels' "Old Man Moon" available anywhere to listen to? Just LOOOOVE that song but can only find the version of it from the movie "Topper" and that's only a partial with interruptions.😥 Pleeez help!!!!😛😁💜

Crappy decade for music. Opera like singing with trumpets in almost every song. Nothing with a groove. Only decent song was at 6:44 Mamie Smith sound natural and not opera like. Anytime before the 60s in america was a crappy time to be in the USA.
