  • I Love Melvin (1953) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #ILoveMelvin
Charming and witty musical reunites Singin’ in the Rain’s Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor in the tale of a go-fer’s quixotic quest to get his lady love plastered on the cover of Look magazine. Melvin Hoover (O’Connor) is a bumbler (except when he’s dancing on skates), a workaday schlep for Look magazine in love with Broadway chorine Judy LeRoy (Reynolds). Melvin convinces Judy he can send her star aloft by putting her on the cover of Look, due to his photog credentials.
    Directed By Don Weis
Starring Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Una Merkel

I read somewhere that Gene Kelly used to reduce Debbie to tears on the set of Singin in the Rain because he considered her an inferior dance partner. It was Fred Astaire, who was rehearsing routines for Easter Parade in a neighbouring studio, who gave her a pep talk and encouraged her not to give up even though it was hard. Though he usually had a guard keeping people away from his practice space, he let her stay to watch how much trouble he had choreographing his latest routine; it made her realize that she could be a dancer too if she stuck with it and worked hard for it like he did.

@@fionatsang9353 That's not quite true. Astaire did find Reynolds crying and he did offer her help with her dancing, but he wouldn't have been rehearsing for Easter Parade at the time. Easter Parade came out before Kelly had even seen the script for Singing in the Rain and Reynolds wasn't even 'discovered' until 1948 (The year Easter Parade came out). If I had to make an educated guess, I would say Astaire was most likely working on The Belle of New York when Singing in the rain was rehearsing.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was produced by Fox, a big film studio that competed with MGM and their award winning musical units. While both films were released in the same year, I Love Melvin(1953) was made earlier and this fancy musical sequence was probably swiped by a person that worked at Fox. The sequences are too much alike for it to be just a coincidence.

Both ladies made a wonderful job, though I prefer Marilyn's (and the lyrics of Marilyn's song too), I love Debbie's too, each lady in her particular and unique style, each one contributing to the legendary old Hollywood Musicals. We will never see a new film of this kind, not even La La Land , which I also love but is in another style..

@@Fancylooks Gentlemen Prefer Blondes(1953) was the bigger movie as it had its A- team(director Howard Hawks, Monroe and Jane Russell) and Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend was the better song and musical number. In the original gentleman prefer blondes scene Marilyn was supposed to wear a sheer gold dress with diamonds placed in specific areas, but Marilyn wore a similar outfit to an award show before the movie was filmed totally n the outcry against the outfit was total... She was mocked for looking too sexual (Joan Crawford went for her in tbe press) so fox decided to go for a simpler outfit that didn't cling to her with simple lines (hence the pink outfit that is a lil bit big for her with the bow).... I think they may have got the idea from this but maybe not...

I love the sound of her voice. So clear and easy to understand. It's rare to hear such diction nowadays. It's very fine and beautifully precise. I love how back then people in the public eye made an effort to enunciate and sound classy. It just sounds so respectable because it's polished and precise. If I can afford it perhaps I'd get my future children some vocal training. I don't mind local accents at all, but if nowadays you have a classic glamorously refined voice like Debbie Reynolds or Deborah Kerr or Julie Andrews or Marni Nixon I expect most people everywhere will be charmed, even if you don't sound like others. A little finishing school can go a long way, and fine manners are hard to master if you don't grow up with them. I'd love to marry a woman with a voice like that.

In film musicals the orchestra is recorded first and the vocals we hear are added later in a sound booth, with the person singing, matching as well as they can, what was filmed. Her vocals would have been recorded in a sound booth. The reason why they are so easy to understand, and there is a slightly hollow dead sound to the singing is that what you hear in the finished film, is not what they were singing when they were filmed. Very few artist perform their musical vocals live. Rex Harrison did it in My Fair Lady and Streisand recorded My Man live in Funny Girl. Can't think of anyone else.

Just look at our little Debbie Reynolds - cute as a button, so very pretty, lively and versatile. She could sing, dance, play comedy till you are rolling in the aisles with laughter and even beat the best in heavy drama. This Warner Archive excerpt is extraordinary for its gorgeous color and clarity and with Debbie in it, it becomes more precious and beautiful. A legend in the acting field, Debbie is not to be missed in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, The Catered Affair and the Broadway hit, Mary, Mary co-starring that genius of acting Barry Nelson and pretty Diane McBain as the other woman.

Here are the lyrics to the song if you want to sing along, like i do.
    A Lady Loves lyrics:
We are the gentlemen of the press!
Yes we are, yes we are.
    Yes indeed, indeed we are!
Our editor sent us to you!
    To interview you!
For Judy LeRoy, you're America's pride and joy
You're the prettiest, wittiest, glamour girl by far
Yes you are, yes you are!
    Yes indeed, indeed, you are.
The fact that we, want us be, positively feminine,
We don't want to know when you have tea if you put cream or lemon in.
Well the facts I give are genuinely, intimately, feminine.
    A lady loves expensive clothes
And pretty jewels and furs and french chapeaus
She loves her lingerie in black it suits her zodiac
Loves a penthouse where she'll be content to stay
Finds little gifts on her breakfast tray
But now and then pack and sail away
    For a simple Riveria holiday
A lady loves beaucoup l'amour, but first of all she loves to be secure
And she adores the subtle phrase that it's the man who pays
Yet there's one final thought she would place above.
All of the things I may mention of!
And most of all, a lady loves to love!
    A lady loves her phobias,
    She has complexity,
    She will insist!
It gives her things to talk about with her psychiatrist
Incidentally whenever she drops her glove
Gentlemen know what she's thinking of
That most of all a lady loves to love
And what is more a lady loves to live
And what is more lady lives to love.

Hey there. This is a wonderful song from the lovely Debbie Reynolds. A real charm and pretty as can be. Its sad they can't make wonderful musicals like this anymore, how times have changed in this time era where swear words run rampant, and sexual references in almost every movie you watch these days.
There is only 5 favourite women actresses i liked from the old era. Debbie Reynolds. Ginger Rogers. Betty Grable. Mitzi Gaynor. Jayne Mansfield. Love jayne heaps.
