The 24v mod is even more necessary when using a bass equipped with EMGs. There is a huge difference in the DI tracks.

@@ericwysocki1659 It's a huge difference. If you look at the DI, you can tell that a dual EMG set in a bass is under powered. Maybe it was just mine, with the active EQ as well, but it's shocking the difference.

So what exactly is it doing? Giving a higher gain signal? Isn’t this Something you can compensate for with make up gain at the desk for the DI track?
I have a Spector from around 2006 (Euro 5 LX with EMG's). I'll have to try it out
24v mods are must do when I have EMG pickups. I like the results. I think it helps to lower the signature EMG tone and makes it less sterile.

Just went to 24v earlier this year for my EMG 81/85 combo. I definitely noticed a difference. A good difference.
I purchased an old Valley Arts with the SSH and it already had the mod in place. I swapped it out just to see and I FELT like I could really tell the difference but I appreciate you doing the A/B so I know it wasn't just my mind playing tricks.
Have been using the 24v mod in my bass, with the EMG PJX set, and the BQC System, and have loved it since day one.
I bought two of these 24 enclosures about 3 months ago and loved it! I have literally just received another 5 sets I ordered for my other guitars. Outside of the usa you can only purchase on eBay, the postage is a stinger but they really do work well!
I just got my Jim root jazzmaster and it’s just such a sick guitar and the playability is top notch
I was super happy with this Fluff test, first because (I think) nobody had done it that way yet!
I've been using this mod for years and man... If you get some sample of 81 before switching to solderless you'll find that they sound even better on them with this mod, not that the new ones are bad, but it was really nice of you demystify this mod and how it improves things with these pickups.

Been using the mod with my 81/85 and 81x/85x guitars for years now and would not play a show or do a recording with out it. Glad to see it get a mention.
You use the mod on the X series pickups?? What does it do to the x-series, does it also boost the sound?

I use them in my EMG guitars they are actually watch batteries stacked on each other under the wrapping
Did the 18v mod what seems like decades ago with 81/85 PUs on a Les Paul, sounded great. And still does.

Its about time someone did this been wanting something like this ever since I installed emgs in my omen6. There store sorta sucks though and requires reverb or eBay for orders outside of the US so dated man haven't been on eBay in year's.
Wow funny, I was running the original Seymour Duncan active heavy metal live wire pickups back in mid 90s, absolutely loved that overpowering midrange. I ended up not using boost pedals or distortion pedals for a very long time. Then back in 2004 I put a set of EMG Zakk Wylde set in the Epiphone Zakk Wylde guitar. Now I liked the Seymour Duncan active so much I called up EMG, they said at the time, that yes I can wire the EMGs for 18volt , and they would handle 24 volt, however he said I wouldn't notice a big difference from 18 volt to 24 volt. If your swapping from 9 volt to either, you'll hear the difference, but he was saying it wasn't worth going from 18v to 24v.
emgs can even take up to 27volts, but that'd be running them at the edge of what they can handle. (3•9=27)
i have the 24volt mod in a King V guitar, which i use for lower tunings, and it cleared up the sound and individual notes of chords when playing with a lot of gain quite significantly.

was there a noticeable increase in output volume or just the clarity. I like the results a lot from this. thank you for posting the DI results. It really showcases the effectiveness.

I use these in many guitars, they make a slight difference but these A23 batteries can screw up so if your pickups start cutting out/making funny noises immediately replace the batteries first. They do last a long time as log as you unplug when not in use
I use the 24v mod live, it does however need a small zip tie to keep the MN21 batteries from coming loose halfway through a set.

18 and 24 volt mods help, but the real game changer is the EMGX'S. the best way to explain it is that it's like taking a blanket off your tone. it's like the regular EMGs had your tone down and the X series turned it up, they're very articulate and clear. the changed my view of active pickups forever.
Aren't the EMG x's 18v stock?
Hot take: you would think if EMG realized their active PU's sound better with more volts then you would also think they would offer that mod themselves.
If emg cared about how their pickups sounded theyd make fishmans
@@Chase_Ryan Personally I am the wrong guy to talk to about active PU's in guitars lol. I have had both EMG and Fishman and I just don't care for either.

I'm sure they do mention on the instructions when installing EMGs you can use an 18v battery.
Not sure about the 24v mod though.
I suspect it's more of a warranty thing.
They will probably run fine for the most part on 24v but I dare say pushing that much more juice through the circuit does increase the risk of something breaking

I got one of these for my guitar with EMG 81/89. I'm not sure how much difference it makes vs 18, butvis easier to use than 2x9v and takes up less space.
I'd be curious of your thoughts on this mod vs the emg x series.
Might try this on my ltd kh-602 with the bonebreakers.
To me the 24 has more kick and it brings out more brightness and more clarity. It brought it to life.
EMGs can take up to 36V - I used 18V mods for my EMG 81 for a very long time - bigger Headroom, for 707 I have 24V mod (just because there is not enough space for a two 9V batteries). (this 24V is very easy to DIY - you need 2 12V batteries and a housing - you can buy everything cheap online). 24V is very similiar to 18V mod for me... I also recommend 18V mod for EMG 808 :)
Seems to fix everything I don't like about emgs, basically that they don't have the dynamics and sparkle. Way better for my tastes at least, I understand people want that more controlled compressed sound though. Reminds of doing the same thing to a lot of overdrives and boost where the circuits have more headroom and better frequency response run at higher volts

I believe that's an A23 battery. I discovered that when I was looking for a smaller battery to put in my guitar to power A PREAMP.

I have been looking at those for my ec1000
I need to get me one of these. I've pretty much exclusively used EMGs w/ 18 volts ever since I learned about it probably 15 years ago. Granted I'm more of a passive pickup guy these days but I still own a couple guitars with EMGs. The 24v seems like it just does what the 18v mod does, but takes it even further to where there's an obvious difference even with a raw DI track like this. 9v sounds thinner, it sounds quieter, and it sounds more compressed or limited. 24v is slightly more output, thus louder... and there's less compression happening, sounds more open. The 9V sounds claustrophobic by comparison, you know...if claustrophobia sounded like anything lol.
What I'd love to hear is a 24v modded EMG compared to a Fishman Fluence modern. Because to me, the 24 volts sort of brings the EMGs into that Fluence territory, more open, more dynamics, a little more hi-fi and clearer sounding.
I wonder if this would be a good mod for the Jim Root Daemonum set. I have them in my Jackson Kelly, and was going to purchase the EMG Marty Friedman set, but I might try this first.
I've used this mod on my emg and going to try it on my blackouts. I wonder if you can do this on the emg dg single coil set
I probably should have tried that mod on my kramer with the emg 81 before I tore it out and replaced it with an old ibanez pickup. Hated the emg through my plexi, this might have fixed it

This is great! Instead of guitar players forgetting the regular 9Vs, now they need obscure 23A batteries no one brings to gigs. :D
High frequencies sound A LOT better though.
My 9v actually died on me midplay Sunday so I was changing it out this week considering the 18v mod. Seems I'll be doing 24v instead now.

It matters how many volts the preamp can handle. Look at the specs or email them.
Personally, idk why you'd want to do this with Fishmans, this increases mid range and high end, which Fishman have TONS of to begin with, although to each their own, I'm just saying you might end up with a black metal tone with about 12 db too much of 5k frequency lol. I guess it would also depend on your amps EQ profile as well. IE Fishmans thru a marshall sound really harsh.
The reason people do this with EMGs is because they're a very compressed pickup. Basically with the Fishmans, you're putting hot sauce on a habanero pepper, some spice is good, but too much ruins a dish. My opinion could completely change if I heard the results though.
No, Fishmans can only handle up to 18v.
Hey nice comparison! I’m considering to try the 24 volt mod too! There is one thing I worry about though. The typical capacity of a 9v battery is 550 mAh while it is only 55 mAh for these tiny 23A batteries. How often do you have to replace the batteries in the 24 volt mod??
am I to understand this really only affects going directly into a tube amp, as a plugin you will red line, thus turning it down eliminating the mod?

Never ever thought about this mod.... I gave my JR Tele an pickup upgrade to the newer JR pickups that came out... I love them. I wonder if I should do this considering it's half passive/active 🤔

It wont do anything since fishmans cant really take advantage of it. Fishmans already have what the 24V does to EMGs if that makes sense.

The thing I noticed most was the bottom end. It also sounded less compressed. Much bigger difference than I expected.

27 volts for most bass applications.. Have 3 spectors with emg x series pups and darkglass tone capsules running at 18 volts and I've seen people run them with 3 9 volts at 27 volts kinda crazy

Has anyone experienced some problems after 24 volt mod? I did it on my 57/66 set, all was fine for 2 or 3 weeks, and after couple of days in the bag i tried the guitar and I'm experiencing 10-20% loss in gain.

There should be adjustable phantom-power for active pickups in every amp, LOL
should be technically possible with normal XLR cables. Good excuse to get rid of these stupid jacks which were invented to plug and unplug often, something you don't want while playing^^

Says 9-18V on the power pins for Fluence PU's. It might work... or you might fry something. Can't find any info on them being rated for any higher voltage

It is two 23A batteries (2x12v) in a dual case. You can get all that at most electronics shops, or even on Amazon.
EMG were designed for 27v (3x9v) but since three batteries takes room, guitar players complain, etc. they let people operate at 9v with a single battery (6F22) … and it’s the same as pedal batteries, etc. It cuts the whining down. LOL
In my experience there is a substantial improvement from 9v to 18v, not much from 18v to 27v. So 12v should be better than 9v (on a single 23A battery); 24v should be better than 18v (on two 23A).
The advantage here is the physical space gain of two 23A fitting in the space of a single 6F22 and producing more than 2.5 times the voltage.
