- Patti Smith, a poet and musician who was married to Fred Smith from MC5, was honored with an award from Detroit and Ford ahead of the concert at Michigan Central Station.
Congratulations Fred and Patti 🎉
My mom used to see Patti Smith at the St. Clair Shores library sometimes. She was a true influential poet and artist of her time...
and she still is. ❤
She used to live 3 doors down from my grand parents in St Clair Shores. Cool castle type house.
I am a born and raised Detroiter. I was 10 when I went with my mom and my great-aunt Rose to go to NY ( 57 years ago) . My great-aunt wanted to go back to Sicily and didn't want to fly. So she went back on an ocean liner. I still remember how much in awe I was thinking how magnificent a place the train station was. I teared up at Patti Smith's speech and Eminem's letter. Although I live in Marine City Michigan now (7 years now) there is a saying " you can take the girl out of Detroit but you can't take Detroit out of the girl.
What an iconic moment!

in the 1970's this would have been Emily Gail who always promoted Detroit until she and BF "Pooh" finally gave up in th 80's and moved away. Remember her "Say something nice about Detroit" campaign ? Emily was daughter of Max Gail who founded Gail's Office Supply back when that business was very profitable, and the sister of Max Gail Jr who was "Wojo" on Barney Miller. Max Sr also founded the "Gail and Rice" talent agency which wrote and produced many auto show presentations of the 50's-90's.
Patti Smith is the real deal and the right person to carry the torch of hope for all Detroiters.
"Outside of society!!!"
