I think that period between 2000-2005 was so great for this kind of epic historic drama movies, like Gladiator, LOTR trilogy, The Patriot, Troy, Alexander, A Knight's Tale, Kingdom of Heaven, Master & Commander, Last Samurai, etc.

I loved how for the most part, Achilles wasn't portrayed as supernatural. He was portrayed more like a superior athlete, the same way Michael Jordan could make the best in the world look foolish in comparison. Achilles was just that bit faster, bit stronger, bit more explosive, with better reflexes and better anticipation. I loved the way they made him move.
Exactly. While this is in no way "accurate" to the Illiad as a source material, it does feel a little more "real" because the mystical elements of the original are not here. We don't have the gods fighting on either side of the war and all the supernatural forces at play. As you said, Achilles here was just a *really* good fighter, superior than his contemporaries and more highly skilled, but just as mortal as the next man.

Hector was talented and very experienced but Achilles was on another level.He said that Hector was the best he fought but even against his most worthy opponent he was never near defeat.Makes Hector’s death all the more tragic.He was brave, strategic, a good leader and a excellent soldier who wanted to defend his country and fix the mess his naive brother caused.He was sent to his death against a demigod.Achilles honouring and praising him speaks volumes about the man he was.He even cries because he realises he’s killed a good man.A man that did not care about glory but love, family and piece.Achilles although superior warrior saw the better man he ended the life of.
But Achiles was a half God, and the greatest figher who ever lived. In the illiad it says he fought so fiercely that the river Gods fought by his side. "Let them say I walked with giants. Men rise and fall like the winter wheat, but these names will never die. Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses, let them say I lived in the time of Achilles" And here 3200 years later those names live as strong as ever.

Axel Gomez 300 ain't even close to Troy, 300 is based on a crappy comic book, the fight scenes were awesome but the rest was cheesy. But Iliad is on of the best master pieces ever written, there ain't no real heros and villains in this story, the viewer has sympathy with both sides.
I literally could not agree with you more. This movie is an epic based on a real epic. 300 is some modern art computer-comic book cluster fuck with no real heart. It's crazy how polarizing Troy(the movie) is. I rank it up there with Gladiator and Braveheart as an alltime great. 300 was entertaining but isn't even in the same stratosphere. Yet there are people who hate Troy and love 300. That's what makes the World... but I don't get it.
James Reese Indeed, imo the movie Gladiator have had one of the most interesting Protagonists in history of Hollywood. Braveheart was also perfectly done, although it kinda made the English look like monsters :D, but it was an amazingly emotional movie. I would also add some older masterpieces, such as Ben hur(1959), Spartacus(1960), the Message(1976), Cleopatra(1963) and many other magnificient historical movies. I guess such decent movies aren't considered profitable for movie makers, therefore no other good movie comes out anymore, i barely go to cinema nowadays!
Achilles ability to read the movements of every soldier and archer around him is super human in this movie, the way he knew to put that shield on his back before the arrow struck it's target was just insane. Too bad it didn't save him later in the movie.

The movie Troy is actually about what the ideal type of man should and shouldn't look like 1) The ideal man -> Achilles, Hector, Odysseus -> Strength, respect, honor, humility, loyalty, wisdom -> They fight and defend their ideals and goodness 2) Toxic man -> Agamemnon -> alcoholic, arrogant, takes women as slaves, wretched 3) Weak and pathetic man -> Paris -> Takes another man's wife, lets others fight for him, doesn't stand up for his own opinions, can't face anything

Yes, though slavery and looting and so on were seen as just the norm at the time in the classical world, it wasn't something only the bad people did. When the Athenians captured Melos they slaughtered every man and took off the women and children as slaves.
Achilles changes a lot throughout the film. How does that fit in your narrative? He goes from only wanting glory and to be remembered as a good soldier to falling in love and wanting to live a peaceful life, from laughing at his opponent to respecting him (hector). This film isn’t about the people, it’s about the prophecy. It is very easy to defeat enemies when the only thing you do is train for war, while others have to work and take care of their families. It is all right to want to live in peace and being forgotten in history. Achilles learnt this too late, and it was precisely when he was helping briseilles up that he kneels exposing his weak point. He’s “Achille’s heel” becomes caring for others. THAT is poetry.

BOURNE vs Desh is probably one of the best hand to hand combat fight scene that was ever filmed and performed by a American, with no extreme shaky cam or cut editing, you can scale what going on at all times. This action scene, there is a cut and edit every single time brad pitt swings his sword, it's very not bad but it's not great either. One of the best choreographed fight scene imo, of all time is Jet Li as nameless vs Donnie Yen as Sky in Hero. AMERICANS can't make a scene like that...
I love Achilles fighting style especially with his sword, so fluid and every move is calculated & a deathly strike. I like how the director also included the longer Achilles fights the more brutal/ferocious he fights, it is shown in this fight and in the fight against Hector.
He's like an artist, every movement of his arm has a purpose, first he attacks their defense, then attacks their vulnerable unarmored spot, like a jugular or leg. Rinse and repeat until everyone is dead haha.
In one section of the Iliad Achilles slaughters so many Trojans that the Scamander River is clogged with bodies and polluted by corpses. The God of the river itself rises to fight Achilles, eventually being driven back by the flames of Hephaestus who comes to Achilles' aid. In a violent company of heroes like the Achaean kings Achilles stands on a whole other level.

I love how the temple steps act as a high point of the scene and a stage for everyone at sea to watch the action. By my count Achilles takes down 20 enemies on the steps of that temple, all while hearing his name chanted from the Greek ships like a modern sporting event.

Troy has by far the best melee choreography of all time. Some movies have come very close and excellent in their own right, but watching this scene for the first time, and later it being topped by the duel later was a nigh religious experience.

They're both sides of the same coin. Achilles is peak warrior skilled in battle and glory but Hector is the ideal soldier. Fights for his home and family and his men.
Well funny enough few medieval battles, or even earlier times, actually had these kinds of attacks. A battle like the battle of the black water in GoT would not have happened since the army that was landing could just sail to a place where the enemy was not and land safely. And the defenders knew this. This is why for example why the anglo-saxons at the battle of Maldon let the vikings land. They knew the vikings would just land somewhere else if they didn't. So they let them land uncontested before battling them.
I bloody love how through all that carnage and battle, Achiiles is only really paying attention to how much glory Ajax is harvesting at the same time. That sidelong glance encapsulates the character so perfectly. Plus he's just plain badass. People have bagged Pitt for this role but in this scene he is the perfect Achilles I reckon - fast, efficient and hell bent on only one thing - fame.
Who has bagged Pitt for this? I’m telling you, as a Greek who’s read the Iliad 100 times from the first page to the last since I was 5, this is exactly what Achilles was like in the story. There hasn’t been a better interpretation before this or since then. The only thing wrong here was that Achilles was way younger, about 16 when he entered and 26 when he died, but that’s a small price, considering the war in the movie doesn’t seem like it lasts a decade.
@@alexman378 Don't forget there was 8 years of preparation between the abduction of Helen and the start of the siege. So he would have been in his thirties by then. By the time the war ended Achilles had an adult son, Neoptolemus, who joined the war and killed Priam.
Achilles’s signature jump thrust lands several times throughout the movie to demonstrate his skill. The only one who doesn’t fall for it and deflects it is Hector; signifying he’s not your average run of the mill fighter.

You may know him as one of the creators of the John Wick movies,he also directed Deadpool 2,Atomic Blonde and Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw. All the fight scenes were done by the same team who did also The Matrix trilogy,300,BvS,V for Vedetta and of course the John Wick franchise.

@@yonslash457 I don't think there was bad blood, Eric and Brad made a deal to not hold back in that fight, and if anyone got hit, so be it. They felt that holding back would ruin the aggression these two should have, especially Achilles towards Hector, and Hector had to convincingly be fighting for his life. There is so much acting you can do in a situation like this, Eric would have to actually be worried about getting hit to convey that fear through the screen.
4:48 I've always loved how when he puts up his shield, it protects his back from an oncoming arrow. It's a nice way of showing that even the gods are protecting him
This battle scenes just fking masterpiece. If you don't mention it, Achiless uses same moves over and over. That "jump", versus Giant, soldier, Hector. That double sword thing, here and when he fought Hector. God, i love this movie so much.
There are a lot of details throughout the film when it comes to Achilles where they showcase why there were legends of him being unkillable and protected by the gods, when in reality it‘s a combination of skill, speed, efficiency and a lot of luck that created the stories.
I hope you're not referring to when Achilles put the shield on his back at 4:48 and it "appears it takes an arrow" as you'd be wrong. At exactly 4:45 approaching the temple stairs he holds up his shield and blocks and arrow, which you see 3 second later as he puts the shield on his back. It's misperception.

If any of you have read Homer's Iliad, you can tell the screenwriter paid a lot of attention to Homer's emphasis on the legacy of a man turning him into a legend. Homer spends a lot of time emphasizing that a man's actions in life "echo in eternity" as General Maximus would say. Achilles is the hero par excellence of this ideal, illustrated perfectly when he has the exchange with the young boy prior to fighting Boagrius. Athenian boy: "That thessalonian you are fighting, he's the biggest man I've ever seen! I wouldn't want to fight him." Achilles: "And that is why no one will remember your name."

And honestly, too much characters would have hurt the movie. So, it is easy to understand why they cut off the gods. And even with all the other changes they did, I still enjoy this movie (still more faithful than clash of titans and immortals).

I loved how for the most part, Achilles wasn't portrayed as supernatural. He was portrayed more like a superior athlete, the same way Michael Jordan could make the best in the world look foolish in comparison. Achilles was just that bit faster, bit stronger, bit more explosive, with better reflexes and better anticipation. I loved the way they made him move.
Exactly. While this is in no way "accurate" to the Illiad as a source material, it does feel a little more "real" because the mystical elements of the original are not here. We don't have the gods fighting on either side of the war and all the supernatural forces at play. As you said, Achilles here was just a *really* good fighter, superior than his contemporaries and more highly skilled, but just as mortal as the next man.

I literally could not agree with you more. This movie is an epic based on a real epic. 300 is some modern art computer-comic book cluster fuck with no real heart. It's crazy how polarizing Troy(the movie) is. I rank it up there with Gladiator and Braveheart as an alltime great. 300 was entertaining but isn't even in the same stratosphere. Yet there are people who hate Troy and love 300. That's what makes the World... but I don't get it.

BOURNE vs Desh is probably one of the best hand to hand combat fight scene that was ever filmed and performed by a American, with no extreme shaky cam or cut editing, you can scale what going on at all times. This action scene, there is a cut and edit every single time brad pitt swings his sword, it's very not bad but it's not great either. One of the best choreographed fight scene imo, of all time is Jet Li as nameless vs Donnie Yen as Sky in Hero. AMERICANS can't make a scene like that...

I love Achilles fighting style especially with his sword, so fluid and every move is calculated & a deathly strike. I like how the director also included the longer Achilles fights the more brutal/ferocious he fights, it is shown in this fight and in the fight against Hector.
He's like an artist, every movement of his arm has a purpose, first he attacks their defense, then attacks their vulnerable unarmored spot, like a jugular or leg. Rinse and repeat until everyone is dead haha.
Achilles is a metaphor for the war itself, a fire, the more you throw in it, the bigger the flames are.

Troy has by far the best melee choreography of all time. Some movies have come very close and excellent in their own right, but watching this scene for the first time, and later it being topped by the duel later was a nigh religious experience.

Well funny enough few medieval battles, or even earlier times, actually had these kinds of attacks. A battle like the battle of the black water in GoT would not have happened since the army that was landing could just sail to a place where the enemy was not and land safely. And the defenders knew this. This is why for example why the anglo-saxons at the battle of Maldon let the vikings land. They knew the vikings would just land somewhere else if they didn't. So they let them land uncontested before battling them.
People seem to forget Helen is not just one woman, she's the queen of a sovereign nation. Paris basically kidnapped the first lady.
I bloody love how through all that carnage and battle, Achiiles is only really paying attention to how much glory Ajax is harvesting at the same time. That sidelong glance encapsulates the character so perfectly. Plus he's just plain badass. People have bagged Pitt for this role but in this scene he is the perfect Achilles I reckon - fast, efficient and hell bent on only one thing - fame.
Who has bagged Pitt for this? I’m telling you, as a Greek who’s read the Iliad 100 times from the first page to the last since I was 5, this is exactly what Achilles was like in the story. There hasn’t been a better interpretation before this or since then. The only thing wrong here was that Achilles was way younger, about 16 when he entered and 26 when he died, but that’s a small price, considering the war in the movie doesn’t seem like it lasts a decade.

@@alexman378 Don't forget there was 8 years of preparation between the abduction of Helen and the start of the siege. So he would have been in his thirties by then. By the time the war ended Achilles had an adult son, Neoptolemus, who joined the war and killed Priam.

Achilles’s signature jump thrust lands several times throughout the movie to demonstrate his skill. The only one who doesn’t fall for it and deflects it is Hector; signifying he’s not your average run of the mill fighter.

@@yonslash457 I don't think there was bad blood, Eric and Brad made a deal to not hold back in that fight, and if anyone got hit, so be it. They felt that holding back would ruin the aggression these two should have, especially Achilles towards Hector, and Hector had to convincingly be fighting for his life. There is so much acting you can do in a situation like this, Eric would have to actually be worried about getting hit to convey that fear through the screen.

This battle scenes just fking masterpiece. If you don't mention it, Achiless uses same moves over and over. That "jump", versus Giant, soldier, Hector. That double sword thing, here and when he fought Hector. God, i love this movie so much.

There are a lot of details throughout the film when it comes to Achilles where they showcase why there were legends of him being unkillable and protected by the gods, when in reality it‘s a combination of skill, speed, efficiency and a lot of luck that created the stories.
I hope you're not referring to when Achilles put the shield on his back at 4:48 and it "appears it takes an arrow" as you'd be wrong.
At exactly 4:45 approaching the temple stairs he holds up his shield and blocks and arrow, which you see 3 second later as he puts the shield on his back. It's misperception.

@@elendil95 I disagree, When Achilles is marching at the Apollo temple it is supposed to have the heroic soundtrack because you are rooting for him. And thats what James Horner intended it to be with the theatrical version.

4:45 is one of my favorite scenes in this whole movie hes defending with his shield and right when he throws it on his back an arrow pierces his shield, so much attention to detail
If any of you have read Homer's Iliad, you can tell the screenwriter paid a lot of attention to Homer's emphasis on the legacy of a man turning him into a legend. Homer spends a lot of time emphasizing that a man's actions in life "echo in eternity" as General Maximus would say. Achilles is the hero par excellence of this ideal, illustrated perfectly when he has the exchange with the young boy prior to fighting Boagrius.
Athenian boy: "That thessalonian you are fighting, he's the biggest man I've ever seen! I wouldn't want to fight him."
Achilles: "And that is why no one will remember your name."
If any of you have read Homer's Iliad, you can tell the screenwriter didn't pay attention to the part where EVERY FUCKING GOD actively participated in the story!
@@MatukaEdgi They chose to make a version without the gods. This is their choice. Nothing wrong in it. When you do a movie, you cannot include everything. And honestly, too much characters would have hurt the movie. So, it is easy to understand why they cut off the gods. And even with all the other changes they did, I still enjoy this movie (still more faithful than clash of titans and immortals).
