    No oil on the dipstick? First loosen the oil fill cap, then recheck. If cold, sealed system can vacuum down level on the dipstick tube/dipstick. Unscrewing the fill cap allows the pressure to equalize.

    Thanks for a great video, learning about lower unit seals. Re oil changes, to be kind to the engine, I like to prefill the oil filter with the new oil and pull the fuel pump fuse and crank engine to pre lube the engine after an oil change. On yamahas, the fuel pump fuse is lableled but typically top right 20A fuse.

    Thanks again for another great video! Haven’t even thought about thermostat replacement. Going to check mine out and see what condition it is in. My fuel filter and water separators are on the list soon so I will check thermostat then. I do appreciate all the work you do Aaron. Saves me 💴and a ton of headaches. 👍👍👍😎🌴 stay safe out there!

    Again another informative video!! i have a 2017 Mercury 150 4 stroke with almost 400 hrs. I do a complete service every 100hrs ! me personally find this engine the easiest to do, for the price of all mercury parts and oil (minus the thermostat its the most expensive cause the housing comes with it) . then when the service is finished i spray the entire engine with a fogging oil to protect everything from the salt! it looks and runs the same as the day i bought it new! some of my friends say im wasting money doing everything at 100 hrs, me well that puts me more involved and hands on! Ive been all over the central east coast of fl and the keys with this boat and yet to find a parts house 30 miles off shore!

    When you’re using the oil drain hose on the Yamaha, are you threading a fitting into the drain hole, or are you just shoving the hose in?
    And what size hose?

    Good video.
    I thought one part missed was greasing the prop shaft. Anyone that has ever had to deal with a seized prop, on a shaft, can relate.

    When you put the lower unit on does neutral apply to digital shifting aswell or just cable? Obviously gonna put in neutral still lol. Also you should do a 7 marine maintenance.

      Yes, keep the lower in neutral for digital engines as well :) I would love to do a 7 marine service video lol if only they didn't cost $100K and I could get my hands on one lol

I was one of your first subscribers, and I told you then that you will become the Most-Watched How-to-do boat repairs on CZcams... I would LOVE it if you ever come across a 2014 Yamaha 300, and can show this type same video, I will GUARANTEE you will, be in the WILL!! ☺ I do a lot of my own maintenance but I don't know even how to get the plastic covers off to access the spark plugs, internal engine-zincs and thermostats... CZcams people; please no mean comments;. I'm just an old dude; looking for help...

    Hi born again, I just bought a 04 cobia 184 with a f115 it only has 200hrs on it. Is there any thing you recommend me doing to it as a proactive preventative measures as it is a 17 year old motor. I'm referring to having the lower unit resealed or new belt and pully. Or if there is any other advise you can give me on this motor would be vary appreciated

    I just bought a 72 222 Aquasport with a Yamaha 150 that has a lot of hours. I went to grease the motor and most the fittings are missing. What is the best action to take for replacement. Also what is a good site for best price and quality parts for a restoration. Thank you.

    8:27 I slide the old impeller over top of the cap. Simply slide the impeller on ...then tap it with the hammer instead of the new cap

    Thank you for the video . I am far from an expert here but for me the new merc 150 is probably the easiest to service . I serviced my daughters 150 and did not spill a drop of oil either from the filter or the drain tube . The filter has a catch basin which I thought was pretty damn cool . Also Merc has put everything on line . I don't know what the dealers thing of that though . Just an observation here on my Mariner 75 hp I was told not to put grease on the top of the drive shaft when replacing the lower end but to just put it on the splines . Something about causing a hydraulic lock . Is that true ??

      Yes, just the splines, because if you put it on the top, then it will stop the drives haft from going all the way to the top and youll develop a bunch of grease in he crank and it can create a larger load on the drives haft bearings over time. So just hit the splines :)

    I have a 225 honda, I changed the thermostats but the engine was getting hot a lot, so I took them out, it has ran great since ! My engine now has 2600 h,

    I'm an avid watcher of you're channel. I have a request for you. My vinyl seats are starting to show some fading and was wondering if you can do a video on restoring them. Hopefully its something in you're realm. I'm not sure Wich products to trust.

    Just one thing though: we mechanics (I am a mechanic myself) don't just lubricate the parts and components for easier assembly and disassembly do we now? We mainly do because it's better. And because by lubricating it, the material won't get damaged! That's actually the main reason why we do it don't we now? Beautiful video though😁

    I have owned Mercs since 1962, people think outboards last forever, with good maintence, fresh fuel and Merc oil they will, funny when people throw off on a brand and never service, and then it quits.
    92 Merc 2.5 200 still screaming on a procraft 18.5

    Hello, my question is unrelated to this video but I was wondering if you could help.
    I've searched high and low, but everyone has a different saying on this.. maybe you know..
    Is it possible to convert a Yamaha four stroke f9.9 to 15hp by swapping the reed valve from a 15hp motor to let more air in?
    I heard it could be done, but I'm concerned about timing, air/fuel mixture not being the same with the reed valve from the 15hp motor..
    Oh btw.. I'm in South FL and your channel is awesome!

      I just work at a shop, I don't own one :/ I would say to find a shop near you and figure out how to get in the door and just try and shadow another tech. Make sure you are teachable and that would be a great start!

    Another great video. I would like to ask you and all of your viewers for some advice. I’m nearing retirement (within the next few years). I’m a HVAC tech so my pockets aren’t that deep. I want to make the switch from a bass boat to a blue water boat. Meaning I want to be able to go out to where the big fish live off the South Carolina coast. What would be your and your viewers recommendations as to the boat and motor size that I would need to fish like I want? I can’t afford anything new. Anything I buy would have to be at least 10 years old so as to fit my budget. Any all advice would be appreciated. Thanks again.

      I'd say to look at boats around 24-28 ft. They're big enough to give you more options of being safer when storms pop up and easier to fish. For a nice cheaper boat, look into Dusky. They ride great and aren't over priced.

      If your looking for something with a few years on it I would concentrate on finding an older hull that some one replaced the out board all ready so your starting off with a newer engine, boat hulls usually dont go bad over time but an older outboard can develop issues over the years, good luck

    Marine tech here again, I tend to prefer to use an oil extractor on the older yamahas, I've seen some where previous owner had done his own oil change, cross threaded the drain plug and it was leaking, upon removing the drain plug, it cracked a piece off the oil Pan, we had to remove the entire power head, disassemble the mid section and remove and replace the oil pan. It sucked

    Is it a common thing in outboards to "make oil"? You mentioned the yamaha oil level was high. I'm assuming it's because the thermostat was stuck open not allowing the engine to heat up properly.

      It isn't "making oil" from a stuck open thermostat. Someone just put too much oil in it. Likely put a full quart in it when it only needed a half quart etc. The oil level would only go up otherwise if it had water or fuel in it. The oil wasn't milky so no water in it. Fuel diluting the oil makes the oil very thin and generally you can smell the gas in it. That open thermostat isn't as much of a factor here in South Florida because its usually warm/hot here.

      Yes, depending on the brands. Mainly certain Yamaha's "make oil" but it's really just pushing fuel into the oil and that is why it is high. Those F115's never really had that problem though, so someone probably just over filled it on this engine :)

      Almost all of them now keep the hours on the engine's computer so you can always check the hours :)

    Don't forget to use wr2 grease on the driveshaft splines going to the powerhead. I used marine grease and my motor started squeeling. Come to find out it takes a Yamaha wr2 grease

    Hello boat lovers, I have a small 50hp mercury EFI , doing maybe 100-150hr a year , when should I change my timing belt ? its 2008 500hrs but looks pretty good. Thanks

      They don't really have a specific time or hour to replace the belt at. They just say to inspect it every 100 hours and then if it has cracks, or is rotting, swollen, rough, or moves more than about 10 mm when you press in on it with your finger, then you need to replace it. You might not need to, but just inspect it with every service and then once you get closer to say 1,000 hours, go ahead and replace it just because it will be like 15 years old and almost 1,000 hours on it :)

    In Canada it hard to any service people that know anything and after norms Bayview marina sank my boat I service my own boat. YES sank it. in for universals and bellows, they drove it back to dock never checked it, and sank at the dock.

    Just a nit-pick: They don’t all require an oil filter. For example I believe Suzuki doesn’t use an oil filter until the DF8. 2.5/4/6 all use a screen that can be cleaned, but no filter.

    Is it normal for an engine to lose oil but not an alarming amount within my 100hr interval I have lost maybe 1qt of oil! I run my yamaha 250 at about 4-5000 rpm for long day voyages! When I did my service it was at the half way point and now its right under the low mark! I have also been watching it drop because I check before every trip, but I wanted to really see if it was losing it fast or to me it seems normal?
    I’m a diesel tech and it is normal in my opinion!

      Um, lol, I wouldn't call it normal necessarily, but possible yes, what year is the engine? It could be signs of the oil pump failing and youll have to pull the powerhead and do a speedi sleeve. Do you ever see an oil sheen in the water? If not, don't worry about it and just keep an eye on it :)

      Each model is different. some have a gasket, some just have the o-ring on the thermstat for the gasket. You'll have to look at your engine to see whether it has one or not.

    Piston Ring Connecting Rods and Bearings (Valves) cost a fortune not to mention engine failure Downtime.
    As with all my 4, 6 and 8 cylinder Car Motors I'll introduce a half liter of premium engine oil to a gasoline fill up.
    I'd even consider a small bottle of Ames Oil in a 4 stroke Outboard (inboard/outboard too) when doing a gas fill up.
    a fouled set of spark plus in a lot cheaper.
    Just look at the size of that 4 stroke outboard engine Oil Filter?
    4000 rpm for sustained running is a lot of wear and tear.

    Bro, please use petroleum resistant disposable gloves. Used motor oil and gasoline are absorbed through the skin and are EXTREMELY harmful!☠
    You are the 1st person beside myself I've seen put grease on an impeller, nice!
