For a large segment of the population pre owned boats the only option. I have owned many boats over the last 50years, none of which have been new. My advantage has been that I as a craftsman with a shop and the tools to do all my my own work. I have been able to own and repair these myself and have saved myself a lot of money while enjoying boating with these pre owned boats. I actually built a small wood/ fiberglass composite boat when I was 23 years old and a 24 foot pontoon boat when I was 28.
I have purchased new boats and used ones. My experience was the new boat had more major problems than the used boats that I have had. The new boat had a 90 hp evinrude 1986 that had been sabotaged by the workers that were unhappy factory was moving to Mexico. New power head needed in first incident and sawn through driveline left me stranded after it broke on fishing trip. Warranty paid for both but huge hassle. My latest purchase was a 1997 231 pro-line with a 2007 300 Suzuki. I purchased it in Miami and towed it back to Seattle. I found out that Florida saltwater corrosion is exponentially worse than what we’re used to in Seattle. But after replacing all the wiring connections and thru hulls, and trailer brakes . I have a very nice fishing boat and trailer for way less than what it would have cost me in Seattle market. Thanks for all your videos and the coupon code for trailer parts!😊

Another reason for the price drop at 20 years is that very few banks will write a loan on vessel at that age. That limits your buyers to cash only (I write boat loans all day every day)
Many outboard techs won't touch anything over ten years old unless it has been with them for a long time.
What is the earliest year your loans would cover?
After 40 years of owning new boats used in the salt from the start upkeep and maintenance to the point of Anal are the key to longevity....BOAT doesn't mean Break Out Another Thousand if you take the time to correct those problems early on😎👀!!
We got a 1999 Key West 196 Bay Reef for $6500. It needed work. We had to redo a bunch of the wiring, the live well pumps needed replaced, the live well intakes leaked, and the swim ladder was broken. It was still totally worth it though. If you have the skill to repair it I'd recommend buying a used boat that needs work. You can get really good deals on them. We got a $15,000 boat for $6500. We spent at most $700 to fix it up.
Another thing to consider beyond money is your time. The older I get the more I just want things to work so I can enjoy them with friends and family. It's already enough work to get everything ready to enjoy a day on the water when your boat has no problems. Throw in a boat that is not reliable and your spending all of your nights and weekends fixing it, takes away from the time you could enjoy with family. I do smaller projects I can enjoy now so I get my project fix in but I'm not consumed for months on some nightmare that never ends.

My first boat was a 20 year old with a shiny hull but a worn outdrive. I sold it and bought a 5 year old boat with a great outboard. After our first weekend on the lake, my son was surprised that the engine started every time I turned the key lol.

I own a 40 year old boat and yes things need to be fixed every year. But would that be different with a 10 year old boat? I'm not sure of that. The sea environment is harsh for all equipments. It is a perpetual fight to keep things in good condition and running. Fortunately, today's engine are very reliable, as long as one takes good care of them!
And I'm so worried if I Do spend 20k on a boat I'm gonna screw up and buy one that rotten
I have had 1 new boat and 5 used boat currently I have a 22ft v hull from the 80s and a new outboard I restored the hull myself and have 30 thousand invested Boat Motor and trailer. I would own new but the same rig would cost $80,000.00

I restored a 1985 Criss Craft Scorpion 215 CC , it was solid but needed wireing , steering rebuild and some electronic engine parts . I did the labor and had $8000 in it . I used it 10 years and sold it for $6000. It had the tank up sized before I got it, big plus. 200 2 stroke ran like a scladed ape replaced in 95 ,low hours. If you get written info with it it help..
Wife and I bought a 35 year old Formula 242 as our 1st boat for 6k including trailer. Then, 4k on totally redone interior/exterior seats, bed and sunpad plus 2k for various other items (engine work, toilet, cosmetics, etc.) . 12k in and we have a fun freshwater boat for our lake in NY. Someday will be in FL with a bigger boat for some fishing!

A 1939 Elco was sunk for years in a marina near my house. The yard gave the abandoned boat to a local store owner. When pumped out it popped right up and was towed to a boathouse.
When it came back it was a beautiful sedan cruiser with a plumb-bow and fresh twins.
He named it 'Dark Side of the Moon' and it was a fast old rum-runner.
Note : I've had old boats - pre WW2 - Bronze fastenings - Post WW2 - Brass fastenings/screws.
Nail-sickness show as rusty stains on the hull. Refasten or risk sinking and dying folks.
I had a 1952 Chris-Craft and it was well worth the effort. The right boat usually is 🙂🌊👋

I want to restore a 1998 seaswirl 250 aft cabin, it needs a crap ton of work and the worst part is that the floor is "soft"... that said I know it's mega expensive but I still really want to do it...
I am looking at purchasing later this year, but doing so via importing from the USA. Complicates things to a degree but at the same time have the chance to save upwards of 35% looking at near new boats.

Have a 91 Grady White with Yamaha 2 Stroke 225. She still 120psi compression on all 6 cylinder. The steering and motor lift hydraulics so far the only things that crapped out

just out of curiosity, to get a job for a company like you alls, what kind of requirements are necessary ? (like college degree ? or just experience ? or what ?)
I just went through this last year. Had a 19ft bay style boat and wanted to go a little bigger to 22-23 started looking at used boats up to 5 years old and the prices of the 5 year old boat was within $5k of the price of a new boat with the same options so didn't think it was worth it to go used.

One thing that I've noticed around the Savannah Ga areas. Most fishing people hate inboard/ outboard motors. I've never used one around salt water , but is there something about using them in salt water that doesn't hold up??? I personally love the little Mercruis 4 banger. I know where a fiberglass Chris-Craft is setting that is solid, but has been stripped out for a restore. Have been thinking about getting it , and making it a center console. Is there any reason not to do this, and use it around salt water?

It’s nice to see a video where some one states the fact that a boat’s reliability depends on its care more than its age. My boat turned 50 this year and has only ever been towed back once in the 16 years I have owned it. I contribute that to rebuilding the carburetor, and replacing points and plugs every 3 years just because. It blows my mind how long people will go with out a carb rebuild and then wonder why it strands them.
Where can get used boats to buy
I brought a 1977 Shetland, same age as me and probably as many issues 🤣 both falling apart 😂 but I can fix the boat lol. Doing a full restoration and getting it how I want it. Slowly but getting there. Having to rip out almost everything that was done before as most was bodged all wood was rotten and repairs just weren't done right. 🤷🤦🏻 Let's not even get started on the wiring 🤣 just say it's all been removed.
I run a 1967 16ft starcraft. I bought it stripped out. Just hull and foredeck gunnels and transom. I have made that hull into an offshore fishing machine. Bought a 2020 4stroke 40 new. Did the flooring steering wiring and all. I run her 30 miles offshore in NJ. People see me and have to ask about it. I built up the helm area put steering on center. I have my fuel tank under helm deck with storage. I built a cooler seal for helm. I installed dual battery in a box in rear of cockpit that I have a fighting chair mounted on top of. Yes, fighting chair. It's just a light one 😂. I got a radar arch rocket launcher 15ft outriggers and 7 gunnel mounted rod holders and 20 other rod holders. When I start 13ft threshers back home people shit themselves. Oh I also fish solo
Aluminum is a great material for boats but it is not without problems of is own. I have owned aluminum boats and worked on several more. You have really vigilant about electrolysis and galvanic corrosion. I have seen many small outboard aluminum fishing boats with transoms and bottoms that looked like Swiss cheese and they were trailered boats in fresh water. The bigger 28 foot aluminum cruiser also had galvanic corrosion around the bronze thru hulls and prop. hardware. You really have to stay on top of it. It is anything but maintenance free.
If you desire a reliable hull go with aluminum.
Right now used boats are crazy expensive. Next year I have a feeling things are going to change.

Just do extensive research on what you want and what you’re looking at getting. Contact a surveyor if you wish or have a mechanic look at it. Be disciplined and do your homework (which you should when dropping serious $$). Ask for captains logs if available and maintenance records. Don’t be impulsive and you will be fine
I bought a 2005 236 keylargo with 200hp Yamaha saltwater for 11k in 2013 and in 2018 I had to redo the gas tank and new engine and rewired just cuz which cost me a total of 20k so I’m 31k into it
What is better, new boat or an old one completely restored?
New especially if it has a warranty
It use to be the boat was the most expensive part of boating and you could get a new two stroke for pretty cheap compared to today's 4 strokes. Now the engines cost so much new it's self defeating to buy a used boat and put a new engine on it. Unless you really love the used boat. I bought a 1996 CC for $6800 it has an 87 two stroke Mercury that fires up first turn of the key and runs strong. If I had to buy another motor even a relatively newer engine 97 we will say is going to cost $5000 to $6,000 a new engine $15,000 to 18,000. That's not including the rigging. I got lucky because this boat just needs cosmetics and everything is easy to fix and all there completely original all solid. Just some gel coat repairs some wet sanding and buffing and this thing is going to look outrageously good for it's year. I've learned so much much from Born again boating I'm definitely a better home boat mechanic than I was and smarter about the entire boating world.

Paint is better than powder coat because it’s more flexible and you can touch up paint
I bought a brand new 22 Angler in the early 2000s. It had a 150 Johnson and I beat it to death for years and never really maintained it. I paid $13 grand for it. My last boat was a 2022 23 foot Sportsman I paid over 100k for. I wasn't as impressed. My Angler was a better boat.

Ime 62 yrs old Owens used boats and motors all my life have had new and used fix rebuild motors an d hulls some are better then others ones to avoid Bay liner, Renelle poor hulls Chrysler Forse motors Volvo and European motors as t parts $ and availableparts

My boat is 1 year old, it cost me a fortune.
As a former multiple boat owner. The biggest thing I've learned from buying used boats is you are inheriting somebody else's mess. From poor wiring jobs to stuff you can't even see. Unless you can buy new or close to New as possible with a warranty buying a used boat can be a game of Russian Roulette. For me now boating I go out on my sisters 42 ft Silverton. Or if I'm going fishing me a bunch of buddies will rent a private boat for a hundred bucks a person or so go out for the day have fun catch fish and go home and if the boat breaks not my problem
I think that is the issue. It not your problem But the guy you did rent the boat from it is. So no matter what there will always be an issue to boats. Just the nature of the beast.
