Thank you Laura for your videos. I’m in Zone 5B in NY and I was taught to harvest hard neck a bit differently. Scapes appear and when they curl into the loop, harvest them. Then allow the garlic to continue to grow. All the energy that was going to the scape will now go into the garlic bulb. When the leaves on the bottom brown, (count up 3 or 4) then harvest. The bulbs will be much bigger! Best of luck!

I just harvested all of my 125 garlics! I normally harvest my garlic right around 4th of July. But the stems were already flapping over. So I harvested them. Your own garden-grown garlic is the best! I promise! Once you have tried it, you will be hooked on growing garlics during fall.

We dry and cure garlic using the shelves from one of those wire storage racks you can pick up at a big box store, propped up on sawhorses. The garlic heads have air circulating around them at all times, and when fully cured they can be trimmed and cleaned easily, with all of the dirt and mess falling below.

I never bother letting the scapes mature at all. As soon as they appear I remove them so all the plant's focus is on the bulbs. If you're NOT going to use them for cooking, I'd suggest doing the same.

Hi Laura! I so love your videos! I live in the Northeast, and up here we can only grow the hard neck varieties.. (Zone 5 like you, but I guess the climate is different) The one thing we do differently is harvest the scapes as soon as they come up. (around the 4th of July) The idea being that taking away the flower scape causes the plant to put it's energy into the head, rather than the flower, so the head can grow larger. The scapes are still perfect for cooking and pickling.

If you eat it all, how about sharing some favorite recipes. I would guess I barely use a dozen garlic cloves in a whole year. I know you plan to 'garden to give', but still that is sooo much. I look forward to the continuation of this garlic adventure.

You can rinse the garlic with water right after pulling it and it won’t cause mold issues, especially if you don’t pile them on top of each other and you let them breathe. I always rinse mine heavily immediately and then I hang them up or lay them on a table.

Some say you are supposed to wait to harvest your hard neck varieties until you've finished enjoying harvesting the scapes usually about a month before harvesting the bulbs. Or if you have left the scapes on, the scapes will let you know by turning upwards and pointing straight up towards the sky. So you probably could have left your hardnecks in a while longer until the scapes had straightened out.
