  • Apple has updated three Mac with its own M1 processors: the Macbook Air, the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the Mac mini. Will Intel-based apps run? Will they be fast? Will they live up to Apple's battery life claims? Nilay Patel and Dieter Bohn have a thousand questions, and almost all of them have been answered.

It’s apple being stingy again, as they are with reducing ports, and expensive r]RAM and storage upgrades. It’s right to call them out on this every single time rather than just accept it. Air is the clear winner this round. Due to efficiency of the M1 chip, you get similar performance, similar battery life, and a similar screen for significantly cheaper. Based on what I’ve seen in this video, I don’t even see a need for the 2-port MacBook Pro to even exist. For example, Id much rather have the Air with 16GB of Unified memory for $1200, than pay $1300 for a base 2-port Pro. If you’re dead set on the Pro, it would definitely be worth it to wait for the upgraded AS chip with 4-ports and a higher performance ceiling.

In laptops, apple only competes in a small sliver of the overall market, and even then, its always a question of price when making the comparisons, so once again, even if you want to say they're first, you can't say they are miles ahead of people like Dell and Microsoft.

    Soooo let's say you gotta choose between 16GB M1 MacBook Air, or the 8GB Macbook Pro of the same price....which one to go for? Anyone got any advice?

    • @Marius_ae
      @Marius_ae Před 3 lety

      If you don’t do heavy creative work, go for the Air, if you do, wait for the 16 inch pro and save up for a 16gig version of that.

      Thank you@@Marius_ae! Unfortunately budget is capped as my friend needs to make the purchase to replace their old macbook pro which has died ASAP, so waiting and saving more isn't really an option. They have enough for either of the options mentioned above, but we can't work out if it's worth getting a Pro with less ram than an Air for the same price.

      @@shadician short answer it isn’t for an average user :) the performance is similar, but because of the cooling fan in the Pro it can handle heavy work loads over longer time without a drop in performance. It Also has a bit better battery, but the airs battery is Also great at this point. The price difference really isn’t worth it for the average user, and 16 gigs of ram vs 8 gigs is a no brainer. I say go for the 16 gig Air :)

      What are you doing with the computer? That’s the question. As they explain in the video, the MacBook Pro can be pushed harder because it has a fan, but the two models are basically just as powerful. When it comes to RAM, it’s not as clear cut. I can tell you the MacBook Pro 8GB model does not feel like an 8GB laptop. It’s hard to believe until you use it, but it can easily handle 4K footage in FCPX without breaking a sweat. You will hit a wall with the RAM if you’re really pushing the machine though.
