I never understood the censorship in doujins. And this “appealing to western markets” idea doesn’t make much sense either.
There’s no censorship over here. People would freak in America if censorship laws passed! They’d be screaming about the first amendment, and the government becoming a communist regime!

@@flowerpower3082 See, normally that’d be a great lesson for like, real life relationships, but when it comes to fiction, it’s not like anyone’s being forced or held at gunpoint to look at doujins or mags or whatever that has content they don’t want to see.
Artists and writers should be free to make whatever they want (within reason) even if it’s weird or crazy or NSFW as *long* as they’re still decent people at the end of the day. That’s why the censorship doesn’t make much sense. Fantasy is fantasy.
And the censorship guidelines Japan enforces for the foreign market is so flimsy anyway. Who’s going to somehow feel a million times more comfortable just because a really thin black line covers a fraction of a naked body? If people don’t want to see NSFW or a certain kink or fantasy, they should just *not* read it, or have places separated by section irl, or by tag online. Which is already a thing!
And if there are still some sites and some places that display NSFW things publicly instead off in their own little sections, then obviously that should change. That much I can agree is just basic respect. People can still have access to these things, there’s just a specific section for them.
This doesn’t just apply to NSFW either. Delving into discomfort and dark themes and uncomfortable topics is what a lot of horror writers/artists/sound effects do to make their stories, and not all of them have deeper meaning to them. They want to make something scary.
Same for those that do write more more meaningful stories that tackle very uncomfortable topics but do so tastefully, which is also covered in the video. Horrible things happen in the real world but these days everything is always claimed to be “normalized” or that the author/creator must “condone” whatever dark things happen in their work just because they wrote it in. That’s asinine.
Sorry for jumping across so many topics. I wanted to cover everything since I wasn’t sure what your comment’s stance was about specifically.

From my personal adventures into hentai culture, most of the time sus tags tend to be portrayed unrealistically (such as physics, often lacks mental + physical consequences/expressions towards the sus) anyways thus easy to separate from reality.
(Some do portray realistically but they tend to go all the way then like Metamorph or similar depression porn) + hentai feels like a safe place for taboos/fetishes and fantasies to be satiated outside of reality.
I feel that it's fine to feel however you like with hentai as long as said fantasy doesn't spill into reality.
(Pretty sure most ppl into ex. hentai bestiality aren't too keen on indulging said fetish irl.

And that's exactly why the US military helps so much with the production of media like that.
