  • I finally got the Tamiya Tyrrell P34 1977 Argentine GP build done. It came out looking cool at the end but hit some hiccups along the way! Running video will be as soon as I can find a parking lot nice enough to run this one without beating it all up!!
    You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

    As someone who has raced f103s for a few years...can confirm the tire tape sucks! We ended up using some sort of slow drying rubber cement pre glued the inside of the foam....and pushed them on the rims. You still had to be quick or it was a disaster...lol.

      It has always been an issue but with the state of things the last couple years have just amplified it to an extreme. They are either going to have to work on things or face being phased out by a ginormous wave of low dollar and high performance stuff flooding the market. Kits will be even less popular than before as everyone is heading to that instant gratification of rtr and they have decent part support!!

    This video was extremely helpful. Your experiences with trying to paint this body sounds exactly like what I experienced when trying to paint one of those Jeep XJ hardbodies for my TRX4 a couple months back. I’m no expert but I’ve been rattle can painting models for decades…and I simply could not get the paint to lay down properly! I gave up on that body but in the time since, I’ve begun warming my paint cans and shaking the hell out of them and it seems like it’s helping…but I am hesitant to try another one of those bodies and I feel like there’s a 75% chance I’d ruin the body on that Tyrrel. 😢

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      I am glad you found it helpful. I normally don't have this much issue with painting, maybe some dust or a rogue bug messing things up or even the heavy handed paint sag here and there! This was the first time I ever had one fight me so badly. I had just painted the Fighting Buggy with the same color paint from the same hobby shop and it went down perfectly, glass smooth and defect free. This one refused to lay flat and even after stripping and sanding the whole thing to even everything out it refused. I generally warm up the cans and shake them all for quite a while, I think this one was an anomaly and was not going to get a perfect finish no matter what. I am not sure if it was a reaction to the plastic for some reason but I have accepted it is not perfect and with the decals on it it looks good enough. You can always save the the xj by going grungy with it. Spray it down with a couple good coats of oxide red primer and then a few coats of grey primer and then the color over that and then wet sand through the color to expose bits of the gray and even the red oxide primer in sports and then hit it with a flat clear to give it an even dull finish. Then you have an old "project truck" build!! Make that the runner body. Once it gets scratched the gray and the red will show through the top color and keep weathering itself for you!!!! I did my Gen8 like that and it turned out really cool looking.

    Seriously though, I am really looking forward to building mine. It will be winter before I get to it, for sure. Maybe I will prime the blue body parts to avoid the issues you had.
    Good rant about Tamiya parts availability! Some people slag off Traxxas but at least you can still get parts for just about any model they have ever made. Tamiya is essentially the opposite. They discontinue a chassis/model and once the parts pool is depleted you are S.O.L. unless they do a re-release.
    Sadly, the problem with Tamiya parts is even worse in Canada. Most stuff I am ordering from the US or Japan. I am not trying to "one-up" your point but even trying to find wheels and tires for a some of their current buggies is difficult here. If I come across a hoard of foam tires, I will send some your way!

      Thanks! I came out good enough in the end and I gave it all the patience I had for it! It was a tough one to keep working on when the paint was sub-par.
      I know parts and gear are harder to get up there in Canada and I know your not trying to outdo me with life is harder! 😂 It is frustrating that the US is the largest consumer of Tamiya kits but the parts and support are so awful. Likewise even worse for you guys up north! I agree with your Traxxas statement. I think they have gotten a bad rap for being an entry level and basher only company but at least they have all the parts you need and I can still get parts for my 20 year old stampede! Like you said, Tamiya just closes up shop on support parts.when they are done with the run of cars. I am thankful for the guys that bust kits for parts or I'd have a couple kits sitting here broken right now!

      The parts thing has been an issue for a long time but only amplified over the last couple years of so many people building kits again and the impacts of the supply chain problems but it has always been an issue with them. The car turned out well and other than the paint it was not hard. The paint issues really dampened my mood and my want to finish it. The first time was an 'it happens, I can fix it' type of thing. The second go-round with it coming out rough was a real let down and I had to push it to the side for a while.and come back to it! It is rare I get put off by a kit like that but that one annoyed me. It didn't help that I spent 6 or 7 months waiting to get it either. It is done and looks good enough I am ok with it. It should really rip out there and I am scouting for a newly sealed parking lot to run it in. I'd love to find one like that but I have a smooth basketball court I can use if I can't. It turned out good but I was just so confused as to why. The first tie I thought it may have been humidity but the white was done at the expect some time and it can out like glass. The second time after the full strip and sanding it was perfect, 75 degrees and low humidity and it did the exact same thing. It just put a damper on the whole build but in the end it does look good and I am thing it is going to run great!! I do have a question for you Rex. What weight oil did you use on the friction plate?

    Addam... my wife listened in, and said "that dude makes more sense while bitching than ANY man I've ever heard!" Then she asked if you were really a man!!! 🤣😂😅😜
    OMG! I said "Cindi, if he's a woman, I would feel more sorry for him than anyone! 😜😅
    Then she came over and redeemed herself. She looked at the screen and squeaked "That's the coolest Beard I've ever seen! Carm, why can't yours look that good?"
    So I spent the rest of the night, whimpering.... 😭
    BUT, YOUR RANT was on point! What IS Tamiya doing to its client base? Those of us who've been loyal since 1982.... like me?
    I'll never get over the Wild One Blockhead.... I pre-ordered and pre PAID for one on the DAY it was announced. I've never had a Wild One, always wanted one, and that one looked special....
    WELL..... over the course of the next YEAR, I watched all the big channels get theirs. Then I watched all the midsized channels get theirs. (caveat, I was THRILLED that my close friend, Mark Bryan got his!)
    THEN I saw the smaller channels getting THEIRS! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
    Then I saw that the RC Elf got some people one, which made me feel warm.
    I NEVER GOT MINE!!!! 😡🤬😭😭😭💔💔
    I contacted them, and they said "I'm sorry, we had to deal with our larger customers first"
    F'in REALLY!!?? 🤬 I was so upset, I canceled my order. 😭 They wrote back, "WHY are you canceling? Your name was #23.... WORLDWIDE to get one"
    F'in REALLY!!!????
    I let them have it - in language I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW I KNEW! 🤬
    .... I still want the red Wild One. But I've got no chance of affording one now.
    UNLIKE your case, where you're one of the lower class like me and thousands of others, I'm HAPPY you got a Tyrrell!!! Would I want one, sure. Not holding my breath.
    Well my friend, that was my rant.

      Sorry you had so much trouble with paint... 😞
      If that happened on my Smokey and the Bandit Grand Hauler, I would have been beside myself. After the first time that happened, I only buy rattle can paint in cases of 6. Better chance that they'll all be from the same batch.
      But you really PULLED IT OFF!! What a gorgeous car!

      Well I am happy your wife sided with me and thinks I have a valid point. I am also pleased to hear I am not a woman and she also approves of the beard. Sorry she shamed you though 😂!! Yeah the handling of releases and their parts support is awful and they seem content with it. I don't know what their deal is as they don't share any information at all outside of pushing new products. You are better off with a real wild one anyway as there are no parts available for the blockhead one if you break any of it. I don't even want to drive mine as it'll be my luck I snap something I either can't replace or it will cost a small fortune to replace. A forced shelf queen in a sense.

      Thank you, it still has issues but looks good enough! I have no idea what happened but doing it twice and the second time it was the perfect day out to be painting and it is still wonky. It is good enough and looks great from a few feet away so it'll look good running!

      IF I Could get any F1 Car (still love that Tyrrel), I'd use rubber Tires for street running. You know as well as I do that Asphalt will EAT Foam Tires in no time!
      We've got a Banked Oval Track here... for real Cars.
      I would LOVE to get a RC F1 Car, with a HOT Brushless setup and a 4S Battery....

      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      Yeah the first time I thought it may have been the humidity but the white cam out great and it was painted at the same time. I thought stripping it would solve the issue, I figured a stripping it with lacquer thinner and hitting it with a full sanding of 1500 grit would solve all the problems but it turned out the same, better but still the same. It turned out well enough and looks good with the sticker on it!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Před 10 měsíci

      Well it is molded in the blue but not painted. I normally would have in the past but now I try and sand out mold line and most of the color molded bodies have color variations in them from the way it is injected or the plastic cools and leaves light streaks in the plastic. I have never had a hard body have this much reaction issues. Of course if I had known it was going to be a pain I might have not painted it...

      @AddamsPlayground  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I just used a ZEE brand 3600mah or 4200mah Nimh packs. I use them in a lot of the Tamiya kits as they fit well and have plenty of power and run time for me. That and they are cheap! LOL! I get them off of Amazon in pairs for $30-40 depending on the current prices.

      Yeah, from what I have heard the run of kits was the only thing done in the aluminum finish so if you break something you are going to have to buy the regular parts and life with the wrong color or paint them. Kind of silly for sure. I guess we'll never know what big business is thinking!
