My mother is a Karen. I moved to her town to help her as she got older. Every service worker in the small town she lived in told me how sorry they were that she was my mother. I got to witness her horrible behavior many times. I walked out after a year and have never looked back.

@Charles Martell thank you for putting the appropriate label on this Karen phenomenon. "She" became popular in recent years due to false/stupid police reports from White women accusing Blacks of imminent harm which was not really the case. However, there have been Karens of all different ethnicities and political spectrums throughout the years. There's quite a few male "Karens " too. The common denominator all across the board is narcissism, a mental health disorder. I know a couple personally from work, and it's not pretty.
My mother-in-law was a Karen. Every time we traveled with her, I spent the entire trip apologizing to people for her horrible behavior.

I saw my first live Karen at Wal-Mart. She had 7 bags and was charged 70 cents bag fee and went off on a trainee who started laughing at Karen. Made it worse, cashier just laughed. After 2-3 minutes of screaming, security pushed her and her groceries out of the store.

I saw something very similar...This woman was going off on a employee. I have no idea why....Anyway, she had already paid for her merchandise when the argument started...
The more she ranted, the more the clerk laughed....The clerk was a very attractive young woman with a beautiful laugh, and soon we were all laughing right along with her....The Karen was screaming insults at everyone and began snatching things from her cart and throwing them....We laughed even more.
Security finally removed her and deposited her outside.....WITHOUT THE STUFF SHE HAD PAID FOR AND THROWN AT THE ONLOOKERS.....
I still grin every time I am reminded of that incident.

I was a manager at Dollar Tree when the quarantine came and they sent a HUGE list of crap for dealing with Karens. They were like cockroaches when it was bad enough to just have to scramble to wipe our asses. there was one a day it seemed. scary times we are in my friends...

I was rude once a service person in a store and said something mean and I was filled with guilt the entire day. I put on my big girl pants went and bought some flowers and took them to her and apologized profusely. Feeling guilty is exhausting.
The problem is these ‘Karens’ are EXTREMELY unhappy with their lives which they have no control over. They treat people the way they are being treated in their personal lives. We need to pray for them.

I deal with Karens ALOT. Sometimes I can de-escalate and such and once I even got a Karen to thank me for all my help when she started off in my face.... but with these severe Karens.... I close my window and call security. I've worked at a theme park for 11 years now and I have so many stories of crazy Karens and crazy people in general.
I was in law enforcement 21 years and I'm glad I got out before the Karen phenomenon got so bad. I did have to deal with a few though. I'd just let them scream themselves out. It usually got under their skin even more. Act like you're ignoring them. I've got an Uncle who's a Karen everytime he goes out to eat at a restaurant. He complains about something every time. I don't go out with them anymore it's so embarrassing. He once threw a basket of rolls through the kitchen trying to hit the cooks.
“You’re now trespassing and I’m calling the cops” would be my default response to a Karen.
This, these stores generally have signs that say we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, comes in handy if you use it correctly. If they persist simply walk away and call the cops to remove them from the premises if need be.
Many times they have a husband at home that keep a tight reign on them! He would bust their mouth open with his fist! The only control they have. Many just crazy lol

It IS my business if I see a cashier being abused by a psychotic customer, and I WILL say something to them because the cashier can't defend themselves 100%, as they risk losing their job by doing so! I once was a cashier and was viciously berated by this small, pathetic little man because the store started charging customers 10cents per bag. He made it personal, as if it was MY rule, and went on and on...and the whole while, there was a line of silent customers just watching him do this to me. No one said a word. I promised myself I'd never be a worthless chickenshit coward like that line of people, and stand up for someone anytime I saw this happen, because I know how it feels.

I'm trying to think what kind of emergency would be solved by shopping at Bones 'n' Scones. Long ago I worked for a costume rental company. Shortly before Halloween, a woman kept banging on the door at 7:00 a.m. -- 2 hours before the store opened. The owner went to the door, and the woman screamed that she needed a costume and it was an emergency! The store owner calmly informed her that there are no emergencies that can be solved with a costume...and left her outside.

I was getting Wendy's for my wife and myself one time, and we ran into a Ken. The store was obviously under staffed. The manager was cooking, and shouting instructions to what looked like a 15 year old, young lady on her first day on the job. The young girl was keeping her composer and learning. So, this grown man comes to front yelling and screaming at her. It took so long and now my order is wrong. Cursing this girl. I keep saying girl, because she couldn't have been older than 16. This grown man says, he will jump over the counter and kick her ass, all kinds of threats. So , when the manager wasn't defending her, I did. My wife hated me for this, but I told the guy he can yell and scream all he wants, but he isn't going to do shit. I am normally a super nice guy, but no one deserves that over a damn cheese burger. I was in his face telling him what he wasn't going to do , that in fact he was going to take his order, even if wrong, and leave the store. You're right beta people, because he did exactly what I said he was going to do. I'm not some tough guy, and some may consider me soft spoken and to myself. I just refuse to see abuse and I will step up for even strangers. You know that whole restaurant gave me a round of applause, as he walked out the the place. I refuse to see a grown man abuse a child, over a damn cheese burger he didn't need anyways. I might get killed one day defended this, but it's worth it.

Part of the reason they got bought out was the ridiculous amount of shrinkage due to theft and damage by employees and shoplifters. The damage in the china dept was horrendous. They caught employees purposely doing minor chips. Of course those items were not sold as clearance to customers but only to employees.
At Jimmy Jlhns we got a big ole sign that says the customer is USUALLY right. I tend to point to that when these Karen's show up. Gets a good reaction.

I'm in my 50's, and I worked in retail most of my working life, until a year and a half ago. I could never ever go back to working a job where I have to deal with the public.
It was literally soul destroying...I actually had to leave that line of work due to extreme anxiety, panic disorder, and depression, all of which I'm taking medication and receiving therapy for.
My heart sincerely goes out to everyone who has to work a retail job.
I completely understand. I tried working at "dealing with the public" jobs when I was in my early 20's. And that was in the 80's !!! HeII, I can't even imagine what it would be like today. Fortunately I did learn early, and became a truck driver. I'm so very sorry for the physical and emotional problems you ended up with because of a public job.

I've seen countless coworkers crying and breaking down in the lunchroom. I've watched various coworkers' personalities change completely over the course of a few years from someone who was happy and positive to someone who was always depressed and stressed.
When a customer goes into a store and feels that they have the right to yell at an employee, call them names, swear at them, throw things at them, they have no idea (and probably don't care) what kind of toll that takes on a person when it happens day after day. I had all those things happen to me, more times than I can count. The last thing I had thrown at me was a 20lb bag of road salt because the customer didn't think I was serving the customer in front of him fast enough, and he had "other places to be".
I understand that the pandemic is stressful, but it's stressful and frustrating for everyone. And, as someone who had to endure the abuse of customers for years, it makes me so sad that people feel that they have the right to take that frustration out on people who aren't responsible for it. Even an employee who is insisting that someone put a mask on is only following their company's policy. They didn't make the policy, and I guarantee that it stresses them out every time they have to ask someone to put a mask on, because they know how the person is going to react. The pandemic has made an already stressful job so much worse.
The problem is that the customer isn’t always right. And they don’t treat others as they’d like to be treated. They treat employees like they’re subhuman and not as good as them. Entitlement is disgusting. I started my own company a long time ago and cater to more affluent and educated clients and that had hedged me from a lot of the riff raft people that are just out to terrorize everyone. Those people get ignored or sent down the road to terrorize one of my competitors. Bwahahaha! Life is too short to deal with angry mean people.

The problem was that customers assumed that we would be willing to do absolutely anything and put up with the worst kind of behaviour simply to keep their business. They thought that as a small business, we couldn't afford to lose even one customer, so we would tolerate being treated like shit in order to keep them as customers. I couldn't understand why they couldn't see that no business needs a customer like that.

The woman who keeps saying, "shut up" & and "you're rude" needs to have this video played at her place of worship (if she has one), the PTA meeting of her kids' school, her bridge club, her place of employment,etc to show her in front of her family, neighbors, peers, to show those closest to her as well as herself what a HYPOCRITE she is. The credo "The customer is always right" used to be accurate, then half the country lost its mind and became belligerent knuckleheads. The customer is no longer right.
In fact, I've learned, from being on both sides of the counter, that 99% of the time, the customer is either just plain wrong or misunderstood something. Very rarely are they right in opposition to the store.

I usually find laughing at them works wonders. It's like watching a volcano explode. I love it. They will never win with me.

Having worked in retail back in the 1980s and 1990s there were Karens back then too. Nothing new! Only new thing is the attention paid to bad behavior.

Having worked in a coffee shop for almost 3 years I've encountered plenty of these Karen's in my time. From personal experience I've found that talking calmly and well articulated to them get's them even more angry, which I secretly enjoy. The best thing about it is, that I cannot get in trouble for escalating the situation as I'm speaking 100% calmly

I felt sorry for the little boy with the Karen who was angry that someone would speak a language in her presence that she didn’t understand. Also, as a delivery driver, a customer started screaming at me one time for something she imagined I did, so I just turned around and left her home without finishing the conversation because I am not a punching bag.

I used to work at a PX at a military post. There was once a woman who tried to return a dress uniform she had worn the previous evening at a function for a refund. She claimed that she hadn't worn it, but we knew it wasn't true. Not only that, but we couldn't take the uniform back anyway, as it had been altered. When we refused to take it back, she actually called 911! The post police had to come and politely explain to her that what we were doing wasn't illegal! My boss then called the woman's commanding officer, and she got into trouble! 😆
I worked in customer service 2 months after getting out of the army. I had rude customers yelling at me constantly about prices. Some even going so far as to call me stupid. I walked away from a Karen who was laying in to me. She asked why I was walking away instead of helping her. I spun an about face and told her quietly and calm "lady,there is no helping you,I'm walking away because if I don't,I will choke slam you to the ground and skull drag you out of this store"
