      I THINK that one big problem was the lights and the cameramen. Yes, of course Gabbani was a little emotional, but the stage and the lights (and orechestra "help") was a huge part of his performance in Sanremo, while in Kiev was all keep to much... silent and kinda boring.
      It's a shame, but I deeply think that Italy will never win an Eurovision, even if with the best performances.
      I don't know if is an Eurovision problem or an italian problem, but so many times italian songs were snobbed. For example, I don't really loved Emma Marrone or Michelini, but Gualazzi of 2011 was just pure raw talent; Gabbani was the favourite of everybody till the final (everybody KNOW the song before the Eurovision itself, because he was so good on stage and he came 6th? C'mon); IL VOLO was favoured by everybody (even if I don't like them, I understand that soft liric is loved outside Italy) and for the FIRST time the winner for the jury DIDN'T MATCH the winner for the pubblic; and Marco Mengoni was good enough for an higher place (he came 7th).
      I'm starting to think that Italy can't/don't want host the Eurovision, so It's ready to lose on purpose each year. Plus, many countries just use to give exchange votes and make agreements so, well....
      Just enjoy the show and whatever. :D

    This a very good example on how the camerawork can make a world of difference on a song. In Kiyv, they overestimated the crowd's reception to the song so they went a lot more for the wide shots that completely eclipsed Francesco on a stage that was already too big for him. They also focused a lot on the dude with the gorilla suit, forgetting that people watching it for the first time would never get it. In Sanremo, the camera danced to the rhythm of the song and they focused a lot on Francesco, which helped in translating his incredible charisma to the people at home. Even when he clumsily puts the microphone back in the stand and tries to catch up with the choreography, it becomes part of his charm. It just wasn't there in Kiyv.
    It also didn't help that they butchered the song, taking a whole verse from it in the most idiotic way possible.

    The difference between this performance and the Eurovision one is so sad... They could have scored much better than 6th position if the didn't have to cut the song to 3 minutes and also some changes like the backing vocalist which I think they were out of place in the Eurovision stage, the camera shots... This song was my favourite on 2017 with of course Amar Pelos Dois and in Eurovision I just couldn't feel the greatness of it. I feel so sad when I remember this :( BTW nice video as always, Jake! :)

    • @hasanordek
      @hasanordek Před 6 lety +4

      They surely did. And the original song was about 3:30 minutes long, which is too long for Eurovision. They had cut the song down by aproximately 30 seconds. That also hurt the song.
      Did you know the same thing happened to the song of France in 2016? Amir's song Je Cherche was also 3:30 minutes long. Both songs were favourites to win, but had to trim the song down to 3 minutes. And eventually didn't win.
      When are the US going to join Eurovision?

  • @stevenkendall3092

    As many other people have also mentioned, you're seeing the full song here - he had to shorten it for ESC which definitely hurt the presentation/reception of the song. Also the song was brand new at that point, it had only been out for a few days and there was a lot of hype focused around another more established name in the contest (Fiorella Mannoia - "Che sia benedetta").
    If you like Francesco's style you should react to his song "Amen," which won the Nuove Proposte (New Artists) section of Sanremo 2016. Like this, It's super catchy and danceable but also has really clever and meaningful lyrics.
    If you want to do more Sanremo reactions, Italy's ESC artists for this year were also in Sanremo 2017 as solo artists and with incredible songs (Ermal Meta - "Vietato morire"; Fabrizio Moro - "Portami via")

    Thanks a lot for the video jake! :) As italian, i also think Sanremo performance was better than Eurovision. I think Francesco and the song would have worked better this year, because of the very minimal stage and better camera direction in Lisbon.
    I think you are following francesco on twitter too, am i right? :) I suggest you to listen to his previous songs (which are way different from Occidentali's Karma), his live performances and the acoustic versions of his songs. • @adambrickley9088
    @adambrickley9088 Před 6 lety +24

    Yeah they way overdid the staging at the actual Eurovision for this, and frankly I think the buildup probably ruined the presentation because at Sanremo he was the no-pressure novelty act that couldn't possibly win, then he won, and then he became the Eurovision favorite that seemed totally unbeatable, and then they couldn't live up to their own hype and pressure. The Sanremo version is so much better.

    Occidentali's Karma is a grower on me, I didn't really care about the song when it came out and didn't understand the crazy hype, but I really like it now. The crowded (and kind of bland too) staging really hurt it's chances, since the music video was absolutely amazing.
    Reaction suggestions: Moldova 2012!!! Pasha Parfeny - Lautar. Absolute banger, you'll love it, I know it. Warning: one of the biggest earworms in Eurovision from recent years.
    Also Brainstorm - My Star, Latvia from 2000. It came 3rd, it was Latvia's first ever act. It is very cute, the song and the performance both.
    I'm so happy that you're reacting to the whole 2014 show too, otherwise I'd be suggesting Finland 2014 in all of your videos, heh. It's in my top 5 Eurovision songs of all time.

    Based on this perfortmance he immediately became the fan favourite but sadly he couldn't keep up the momentum until Kiev. Also the song was badly damaged by the fact that they had to cut 30 seconds. When you compare the Eurovision-version you can tell that there is something wrong about this song, something is missing.

  • @Northfan42
    @Northfan42 Před 6 lety +1

    There were a lot of wonky elements to the performance of this in Kyiv, but the thing that killed it for me was the time frame. The version here is about half a minute longer than the allowed limit at Eurovision so Francesco had to cut it down. In Kyiv, without part of the first verse or a second verse at all, the slow build and overall shape of the song were ruined. Overall, it came across as unbalanced, messy, and more limited and repetitive than this complete version is. Such a pity.

  • @Mago2208
