  • In today's video I unbox and upgrade the SSD in the brand new Steam Deck OLED!
    I took the 1TB SSD from my OG Steam Deck and swap it into my 512GB OLED model....
    Please note: This is NOT meant to be a tear down or how-to video, just my own personal experience DAY ONE of receiving the Deck in the mail after immediate ordering at launch day and swapping my SSD out. Up until the recording of this video, there was not much in the way of videos or info showing the opening of the OLED Deck so I was going in cold for the most part. I was swapping my SSD regardless, and decided to simply put a camera above me doing it to possibly inform people with what was going on inside the system, or involved. The ribbon cable seen in this video that I was trying to be careful with can be disconnected and removed as pointed out by many commentors below, however in my case I simply worked under it successfully.
    Thanks again for watching. 👍

    Thanks, just finished up my SSD swap but really wished I had seen the comment about the ribbon cable connector being the flip-up type beforehand. SSD and battery connector were pretty hard to finagle underneath the cover but doable in the end -- though it's hard to tell if my battery connector was fully seated. Only time will tell.

      @Wompratz  Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah, I've since updated my description to take note of that. At the time of recording, there wasn't much info out there and the way the adhesive was sticking to my wiring and that plate, I honestly was trying to baby it and take a less is more approach.
      Some of the wiring under that plate was stuck underneath my unit.
      In any case, I am glad it worked out for you. Enjoy your Deck, and thanks for watching. 👍

  • @forgiv
    @forgiv Před 7 měsíci +12

    The ends of that ribbon cable look like the simple flip up latch style with hardened plastic ends.
    If that's the case it would've been far safer to just remove the cable since the parts where it's folded are actually the weakest and most likely to tear if pressure is applied.
    That said, that ribbon cable is also the type that's harder to tear because of that outer layer it has so I guess Valve took that into account here since the previous cable didn't have that outer layer.
    My deck is supposed to come in today (Black Friday) and I'm going to be doing the same upgrade, so I'll put my observations to the test then and report.

      Sounds good, I appreciate your input. Since I did this, iFixit has released their own video and although I haven't watched it yet, it sounds like that is the case.
      For myself, I was simply using Retro Game Corps video from almost a week ago as a basis for doing it. There wasn't as much information at the time but at the same time I knew I wasn't going to start using my new OLED until I got this 1TB into it first.

      @@Wompratz Upgrade complete. The actual connectors are as I suspected, what I was not prepared to see was that the ribbon cable itself was glued to both the metal cover and the battery.
      The absolute safest method would be to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive before removing, but I found that it's actually not a super strong adhesive and simply pulling on the reinforced part of the ribbon cable away from the shield was enough to get it unstuck.
      There's also a small cable at the bottom of the board that has a bit of tape stuck to it and the top of the shield, it was easy to remove with a fingernail.
      After the swap, the pieces stuck back with no issue and everything is working.
      Honestly really disappointed in Valve for using so much adhesive here since it makes replacing both the SSD & the battery pretty scary. But, to their credit, the reinforcing layer on the ribbon cable is more than strong enough to handle being pulled off. It's just scary...
      Ultimately, I think the way you handled the situation is fine. If I was to make one suggestion it would be to go ahead and disconnect the ribbon cable on the left side (marked "C-R"), it's a simple latch that snaps up with a fingernail and the cable comes up and out. The end of the cable is not reinforced and the strain from moving it around while it's still connected would be enough to tear that section.
      Loving the OLED deck, btw. My pokemon rom hacks have never looked so good.

      @@Happy_Snapper I have a full reply to @Wompratz in this thread that you can read, but the tl;dr is this: @Wompratz method is fine, just make sure to disconnect the ribbon cable on the left side first. The ribbon cable is adhered to the metal shield, it can be removed by pulling on the reinforced section away from the shield, but it's pretty scary to do and I would recommend a heat gun for a safe removal.

    I replaced my SSD yesterday. You can unclamp the ribbon cable to your left. Unfortunately the heat shield is tied to some wiring that is connected to the ribbon cable. Valve made it that much more tedious to replace the SSD this time around.

      Yep noticed that on my Oled model too, but not in any of the videos I’ve seen to replace the ssd. Was a very unpleasant surprise. Still just finagled the heat shield/new connected cable to the side a little just enough to get the screw off the m.2 drive and replace with the 2tb I bought of Ali x. Was super afraid I was too rough with it, but everything seems to be running fine again and I’m now up 1.5tb more ssd space

    Valve moved that ribbon cable to the top so it would be EASIER to move... you're suppose to unstick it and move it out of the way! There's no need to be overly cautious with it... just treat it with the same level of care you would any ribbon cable. Gently unstick it from the bracket and then slip the bracket out of the way. When reinstalling the bracket use the remaining adhesive to stick it back down.

    • @Wompratz
      @Wompratz  Před 7 měsíci

      Sounds good. More and more tear downs are coming out now so the info is good to get out. In the lead up there was a lot of concern about that ribbon cable due to it's fragile nature. I did this Wednesday fresh out of the box and there wasn't much to go on at the time. I used the method Retro Game Corps did in his video.
