I quickly touch the headers on each cylinder (could use a infrared thermometer) and see if they are warm. It's much easier than removing spark plug boots or checking spark plugs.

  • @heimlichhotrods
    @heimlichhotrods Před 4 lety +39

You need a laser thermometer to check egt’s that will tell you how each cylinder is running👍if it’s hot above 400 degrees at idle it usually means lean I would check the exhaust temps first and it only looked like it was smoking out one pipe 🚗💨💨💨your buggy rocks hope you get her figured out🤘🏻🇺🇸🤜🏻🦠

Love the fab work you do ! Your creativity and talent is pretty amazing ! You could use a front wheel drive engine and trans from an import or domestic. Usually can get a wrecked, insurance auction. Low mile, roll over, rear impact, running damage car, for pretty reasonable. Running the stock gear box from the donor car is reliable and probably strong enough to handle the horsepower from the factory power plant. Take a Honda Civic SI , the gear box is made to handle for warranty reasons, and can be 200hp? Ford eco boost, GM ecotec power plants are good options, and if you get the whole car you can grab everything! Usually from the center of the hub to the front of the engine ( forward towards bumper ) is only 18 inches. You have more than enough room in your buggy. You could play with tire size to get a lower gear, or run it into a chain drive pushing the engine forward. Food for thought. I admire the can do attitude I get from you and the willingness to try everything even if it fails. It is truly courageous and I enjoy being entertained by your channel ! Proud of you !!!

Vf1000 was a v quick and powerful bike, even with the extra weightf it,s not making enough power it isn,t running correctly. When you properly raised the revs you could hear it find the sweet spot, now you need to move the sweetspot where you want it by jetting/airbox/ and possibly exhaust. Once you lose the factory set up it becomes a tedious job to regain smooth running. Well done with your projects you are very skilled .

Edit: Car engine the junkyard is your oyster. Transmission wise, I'd HIGHLY recommend a VW bug transaxle from the old air cooled engine, 1969 to 1977. You can get several different adapters. If I had to recommend an engine, I'd suggest a Geo Metro 1.0L 3 cylinder with throttle body fuel injection. Its essentially a glorified carburetor, but with fuel injectors. Stupid simple to use.

As soon as he said car engine swap I thought the same thing about the geo metro engine super simple and would probably fit pretty easy
And just to put my 2 cents in I would use something front wheel drive so the engine and trans are compact and you wouldn't have to modify to much
A k20 honda engine with a turbo would be sick to see in there and would probably make it wheelie, lots of torque and power
But thats just my opinion your builds are awesome and and even if you just left it like it is its the coolest built buggy on CZcams

    First, excuse my english.
Get a electronichal thermometre (that thing looking like pistol) to determine wich cylinder isn't working. Just measere the exhaust pile next to cylinder head.
After working at carburetors you need to sincronize them and after that you need to ajust the mixture. You will find the values in the repairing manual.
That ticking noise is just an exhaust pipe, don't worry about it.

Black smoke that dissipates in seconds is too much fuel. Grey smoke that lingers is oil burning. The ticking noise on street bikes means the exhaust is rapidly cooling or heating up. Check your valve adjustments and get your carburetors synced so each cylinder gets the proper fuel mix proportionate to the other cylinders. The horsepower to weight ratio will always be greater with motorcycle and power sport equipment than with a stock car (or truck) motor. I would look for a big Honda Goldwing that is shaft drive with reverse. You can find older ones that still run great for very little money.
Great video and thanks for all you do.

Since I've switched to non ethanol fuel, the problem has been resolving itself. If I could easily drain the tank, I could clear it up right away, but XJ tanks have no drain plugs. Drain your fuel and switch to non ethanol and I think your problem will be solved. Hope this helps. God bless, stay well.

Hi, love the video's love the content. Not something to do easily in the Netherlands. As you stated at the end. The engine swap. As a car enthusiast I would recommend a Honda 4 cilinder. There are a lot of them. Lots of parts and not to expensive. Also a big number of people who could help you. Plus a 1.6 or 2 liter would probably be enough. But since you're in the US a 2.4 K-series could also do the trick. Another one to maybe keep in mind is the Ford 2.5 liter 4 cilinder. If you take a front wheel drive then you have everything already in the package. Just make sure your wiring is a ok. You could then (if you wanted) make a chain driven wheel after the dif. So the output to keep the driveline parts you have now in the same place and keep your suspension travel the same. Otherwise this might change a bit.
But enough of my rambling, keep up the good work and greetings from across the pond 🇱🇺

Plug chops should be done under load. Example full throttle highest gear and at end off road switch ignition off. Then check. Or part throttle highest gear for a while. Neutral gear plug chops wont be good enough but it will indicate if anything is way off. That exhaust and air filter is not a problem. To my ears its running a tad lean like all motorcycles come from factory. That jetting kit would help alot!

Also have a look at "Team Olympus" CZcams channel and have a talk to Daniel this is what they do for a living, they are great guys and I'm sure they will offer you sound advice going forward.
    Great work as usual
    Tony from Western Australia.

First, the ticking noises are from the exhaust pipes cooling down.
Second, you need to balance the carbs properly to get the best out of them.
Third, you have more power from the motorcycle engine to find by tuning it.
And if you want to change to a car engine, may I suggest a Honda civic engine/gearbox. Very tunable, very fast.

is the engine sitting "level" as it was in the bike. the way the intake was designed tilts the carbs so if one set ie: the front tilt more than the rear carbs it might change fuel level in bowls or allow more fuel to flow thru the idle circuit. many possibilities to look into. still sounds like it isnt quite running right yet.

The ticking is just metal expanding and contracting as it heats and cools.

Some of the larger cc Honda gold wing motorcycles have reverse. Like a 1500cc motor. Or some bigger cc snowmobiles have reverse with a lot of power.

Ticking is from how hot them pipes are and them cooling down 🤣

You should get racing harnesses for your buggy, it would look pretty sick!

The ticking is just the exaust pipes expanding and contracting also don't be afraid to slip the clutch its a wet clutch and can be slipped all day long. I would put a twin turbo hyabusa chain drive to an old ford 3 speed 3 on the tree just make new linkages and use the stick conversion.

did you check the pressure in each cylinder to see if you have blow by?

A little 4 cylinder Subaru engine and transmission would fit nice on it. They're pretty compact, all aluminum and nice and lightweight.

Totally agreed. Great package, and that buggy is huge anyway. If he bought a wreck he would have the option of going 4wd if he wanted.

The air filters might be to restrictive for that engine making it run rich. When you rev it and it sputters it sounds like it’s pretty rich. The filters probably flow enough for it at idle but simply won’t allow enough air to flow through higher in the rpms which would explain why it idles good but gets worse as you rev it.. The ticking was probably the exhaust pipes.

you should get a reverse gearbox for it! It also might gear it down a little and make it easier not to stall without spinning! Love the buggy!

Motorcycle carbs have 3 stages, and depending where you are in the rpm/ throttle position depends on how and what you have to tune with them. Thos jets you were thinking of changing still might need to be jetted up. They only run on those when you are close to wide open. The rest are determined by the type of carb, you might need to raise or lower the needle for a lower rpm/throttle position.

You can also check if cylinders are contributing by spraying a bit of water on the header.
And for another engine, just get a crashed car whose engine is still in good condition, take all the parts you need and bring the rest to the scrapyard

Just curios where you got your aluminum or any of your metal? We have here in South Jersey a metal place that buys companies excess and then resells it cheap.

Tip for next time you weld panels on, to make it look more profesh, use a wooden ruler, cut to size, to gap your stitch welds. First thing a potential buyer will see, maybe even comment on, will be those welds, trust me, been there. If you gap your welds and match them (so for example where you have to panels on the same bar) your asking price will be far higher than without doing that.

Get a snatch block and some chain si you can use the winch to help you back it up.
You know, from the winch to the block secured behind the cart, then back to the cart.
