Early Astrid Varnay's "Was bluten muss?" (Elektra, 1952)

- Varnay in full prime conquers Elektra's tessitura with ease, command, and unlike others in the role, perfect diction also. Remastered (and pitch-corrected) in great quality, except a few glitches I couldn't remove.
A true dramatic soprano, with development in all registers (and definitely not a mezzo...).
Elektra - Astrid Varnay
Conductor - Fritz Reiner
23 February, 1952.
The infernal Goddess of Wagnerian sopranos. Singular in Strauss, to my ears.
The greatest ever!! The darkest dramatic soprano with mezzo and contralto possibilities
This is TITANIC! A wall of sound! Thrilling!
So thrilling! I'm trembling with excitement.
WOOOOO, not normally a big Varnay fan because the tone got a bit wild later on but this is THRILLING. MY GOODNESS.
Wow. Titanic!
My favorite Elektra recording.
But the pairing with Regina Resnik as Klytämnestra in the 1964 recording is even better!! And then of course Varnay as Klytämnestra with Nilsson as Elektra ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@WotanKlingsor But the male singers in 1952 were much better.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 I see...
Exciting and well done. None of the scooping and hesitation that came later. Nice to hear her with a cleaner attack here.
❤
The best wagnerian Soprano..

@@omarsomehow69 The best to me. Ever.
Magnificent!
Amazing!!!
I don't think Varnay always had the greatest technique but she had the most superior musicianship of the Wagnerian singers I have heard and the voice itself was titanic and with a large, almost bottomless range.
Listen to her recording of Leonora’s second aria from Trovatore…
@@draganvidic2039 I have lol. I am quite the Varnay fan.
Agree with this.
