Birgit Nilsson, perhaps the best Elektra ever. And a tremendous actress.

Las grabaciones no reflejan ni remotamente lo que era su voz en un teatro. Nunca experimenté eso antes ni después. Era una voz de teatro, y ese concepto de que era fria, es una gran falacia. Su Tosca tenia una sensualidad que pocas podían competir, tal vez Crespin, Rysanek y por supuesto Tebaldi. Ninguna de la rusas que tuvimos que soportar y que fué un aluvión a partir de los 90, que no tenían idea de que cantaban, que parecían loros imitando sonidos, casi parodias, pueden compararse

Why did she insist on going on so long? There was no greater Elektra than Nilsson in her prime. This is strident out of tune singing.
I would not consider myself an expert on Ms. Nilsson, but I could tell that she was no longer in full bloom. Having said that I thought she sounded powerful and likable, not the best I've heard from her, but I enjoyed this clip.
I don’t think it matters as much with an opera like Elektra……it’s basically just 90 minutes of screeching. Any soprano doing Elektra this late is adequate enough…..don’t think she was that bad here though.

People still payed to hear her. Maybe it has to do a little bit with nostalgia. She was La Nilsson, regardless of her age and not being in her prime. Granted, she was very much out of tune during great part of the opera, but the splendor of her presence as an artist was still there. I would have payed to hear her even if she was way past her prime. She still had the stamina.
Nilsson on a bad day and 40 years into retirement beats most of what passes for an Elektra today
