It would take even longer with thevstring because it would be hard to thread that limp string thru the mounted post. Wouldnt be able to tilt it up like u did
Can I get a cable in a longer length. My problem is the latch was placed very high and I cannot reach it over the top of the gate. Would like a longer cable that droops down to where it can be reached easily.

Your hand was in the way for the last step of the steel gate latch cable.

Uninstall and reinstall it lower.
