    I'm starting to think that Patrick Rothfus, author of the name of the wind had no idea what a lute was when writing his book. I have yet to see a lute with only seven strings.

    • @danbluedeer
      @danbluedeer  Před 4 lety +12

      Huh... I must have missed that point when I read the books. I'm sure there must have been lutenists in the past that couldn't afford all those expensive gut strings that a fully string 7 or 8 course lute requires. Maybe they just used a single string for each course.
      One must remember that Kvothe was living in a different world than we know.

    • @resourcedragon
      @resourcedragon Před 4 lety +1

      The medaeval lute had 5 courses, rather than the 6 of the early Renaissance lute. So 5 courses is 11 strings. (You still see this on middle Eastern ouds - but there the single string is usually the lowest, not the chanterelle.) Given that something like the rebec only had 3 strings, I think it's possible that there was a medaeval instrument with just 7 strings.
      .
      On the other hand, did Rothfus write "7 strings" when he meant "7 courses"? You may be right, he had zero understanding of the lute.
      .
      I continue to be amazed by the number of people who don't know what a lute is.

    • @marcus8710
      @marcus8710 Před 4 lety

      So much focus on music in the books, that would indeed be odd. I don't remember specifically well enough about the lute - except in the tavern scene with the binder's chills... waiting for that next book.

    • @Rigorwideo
      @Rigorwideo Před 3 lety

      Even though it's not a lute but a guitar, the renaisance guitar had 7 strings: 4 courses with 3 doubles and a single upper string. It was the very first guitar and direct descendant of the lute, so a lute with that same setup doesn't seem unconcievable, especially in a fantasy book. (look up "The History of Guitat" on Rob Scallon's channel for more info)

    Slowly starting to fall in love with the lute. After discovering The Witcher books and games, I've wanted to play the same instrument as my favorite character, dandelion. I want a lute to cosplay him with, but I also would like to learn to play the lute since I already play guitar, bass, and uke. Good thing Christmas is coming up.

      I’d recommend listening to Skyrim’s OST, it has very nice lute songs, like “The Bannered Mare”, you could also try the game if you haven’t :D

    my god this sounds amazing. But i have to ask, how long does that take to tune?

    • @danbluedeer
      @danbluedeer  Před 4 lety +5

      Thanks! once the lute is in tune (which takes quite a while to achieve) it stays in tune pretty well thanks to my replacing the friction pegs with mechanical pegs.a great invention!

      @resourcedragon Před 4 lety +1

      Back in the day, someone wrote that "if a lutenist live to be 80 he will have spent 60 of those years tuning his instrument." Daniel is playing an 8 course Renaissance lute. Baroque lutes went up to 13 courses or 25 strings. My personal opinion is that is what killed the lute. Thirteen courses is just too much of a good thing. By contrast, the Baroque guitar had just 5 courses.

      @@danbluedeer happy new year :) I've been really wanting to compose lute music however although i play guitar and feel a lute would suit my playing style, i haven't the funds to buy one, would you be interested in collaborating? I could write the pieces for you to play? :)
