    I agree with your views on this video. Not knocking anyone. Ive worked as a para for seven years and now a substitute while finishing my El Ed -Math degree, later in life. I found many of your tips worked for me in my limited role, without realizing it. I try to be a duck and just help students and have fun. Well done!

    This was such a good reminder of not getting sucked into negativity and to be a blessing. I love how you said you want to be a teacher that helps new teachers. I wouldn't have survived my first year last year without one of the veteran teachers taking me under her wing! Keep it up:)

    I'm in middle school and it's weird to look at it from a teachers point of view, I didn't realize teachers could not like other teachers, which I suppose was dumb of me because it is always possible for people to not get along. Anyways I like watching your videos to get a view on how teachers view it. I'm going into 7th grade (which is the first year of middle school for me) and I'm super scared to do it but your videos have kinda helped me.
    Ps: I noticed the Hamilton stuff in the background. I LOVE Hamilton

    I was a tutor at an elementary school for a couple months. Every time I would step into the staff lounge at lunchtime, I would hear teachers talk badly about their students. Also, those same teachers would give another fellow tutor and I bad looks. I didn't care much about the dirty looks but I fell bad for the students. It became so uncomfortable being there, that I would just have lunch in my car to avoid them. I never thought it would be like that in a school setting. Thanks to that experience, it made me think about the kind of teacher I would like to be.

    Last year was my first year and I worked with the most difficult teacher in the whole school! She had to be in control of EVERYTHING and always bragged that she taught for 25 years. She was super negative and almost drove me to the edge. It was so bad, I had to go to the principal and thankfully she was very supportive and gave me advice. Oh man, I'm glad I'm not on her team next year! Like you said, you can't change anyone and sometimes it's just the way they are for whatever reason.

    Negative people definitely put me off even going into the staffroom (lounge). I am a real sponge for other people's emotions and I must work harder with that. I understand that people need to vent and I'm perfectly fine with that, but I can't sit and listen to some of the nasty things that people say about kids (and their parents). I get angry at kids, but I don't "hate" those kids, and with some people it seems as though they don't seem to even LIKE their students.

    Top point about being in charge all day then 10 mins after the bell having to play a diff role in staff meetings and such. I struggle with individuals who have a massive ego. To me, teaching is a serving role and I struggle to relate to show ponies/ conceited/competitive teachers. PS I love the secret role model idea you talked about 👍🏼

    Really loved this! This year will be my first year teaching...I know a lot of the staff from long term subbing there but it can still be intimidating going in. All the grade levels have teams you so work with usually at least 3 teachers you consistently communicate with. The point about being in charge all day is something I never would have thought about before that makes a lot of sense. Thank you both!😊

    I am trying so hard to build positive relationships with my coworkers, but it's so hard. I'm one of the oldest teachers at my school, and I have the most seniority. I love to learn from the younger teachers, but they have a little clique and ignore others who aren't part of their group. Our school secretary witnessed an incident where we were all sitting around before an event and I was deliberately ignored and left out of the conversation. I work hard in my classroom every day for my kids and I do my extracurriculars, but I avoid the teachers lounge like the plague.

  • @Rachaelannkerr
    @Rachaelannkerr Před 7 lety +8

    I loved these tips. I notice in the different schools I've worked in for some reason my positive energy sometimes attracts people who are negative. I don't know why but sometimes it's difficult to not become negative too. I want to be a good friend and listen to them when they need it but not let it bring me down. The job is already stressful enough.

    Thank you so much for this video. I am a new middle school teacher at a new district. I taught third grade at my last school for thirteen years. I hope the staff is supportive. These tips were great! Do you usually eat in the teachers lounge? I would typically run errands on my break or eat in my room to catch up on grading.
