  • NB see this video about what I have taken for Bess for many trips.
    • What's in Bess' Pack
    There are a few comments worrying about Bess being cold. You will see from the above video that she has plenty of options and we took them ALL for all early deep into winter trips! However I discovered that Bess wasn't needing them. She kept warm with her thick coat and plenty of food. I monitored Bess carefully and she was never cold or uncomfortable!
    I found the foam mat was the single most important piece of kit for her when cold as it separated her from the ground. The foam mat is not in the above video as I discovered it later. This is an early look at what I was trying and taking. Also note she wore a water resistant coat by day to help keep her dry.
    Thanks for watching.
    flyingdogphotography.blogspot.... my write up and KIT LIST :-)
    A year ago I set off down this same track for my first ever wild camp • Staika on Dartmoor wil... today was my 10th wild camp and the first down this same track since last August, I must admit it brought back a few memories.
    The weather was VERY cold and harsh, my toughest so far, but thankfully too cold to rain!
    It is quite long so put the kettle on, sit back and enjoy.
    I'll add a blog post and kit list to my blog sometime soon, please chack back later in the week or early next week, cheers :-)

    Hiker - My beloved wife, will you join me on a backpacking trip ? It will be long, cold and treacherous.
    Wife - Bloody hell no. Leave the credit cards before you leave.
    The dog - I will be by your side master. To watch over you and keep you warm. You can also use my fur and meat if it comes to that.
    We all know who the best friend is.

    great video, thank you for posting and for the effort! I must admit, camping under a tarp brought on flashbacks of similar camping in Germany with the family. we were awoken at 2am by an unexpected downpour. result: a river running through the front and out the back. 😂 luckily it was a summer storm.

    There is no need to keep your meths warm as the freezing point of meths is -97 C, also is you buy a survival blanket, one of the thick ones, you place it with the silver side up and it will reflect your heat back up to you as well as stopping the base of your inner tent from getting holes.

    Yup, spot on Ryan. In fact Bess was sometimes producing so much internal heat her coat steamed, that was amazing to see! Cold, no chance :-) Another thought occurred to me that I may have said elsewhere in a comment, her coat is probably layered and certainly thick, putting a coat on her, with retrospect, would have compressed her own coat, like compressing down, and maybe cooled her! She did amazingly well, now in retirement, sadly, but age catches up. Thanks for dropping by :-)

    A handy tip when walking in freezing temperatures is to carry your water bottle up side down, then although the bottom freezes, you can still drink from it. Of course as the temperature drops well below freezing the whole thing turns to slush, then freezes. But that's life. Thanks for the video.

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  Před 7 lety

      World Survivalist Hi
      the Trailstar I'd say 50mph won't even bother it. over that you won't sleep lol seek shelter in trees or valleys. but you'd be safe over 50 mph too.
      other tarps and mids I'd not risk that speed! Supermid would be ok to 30 plus add in gusts. not tried it but I'm sure it would hold up to a beating. but it's not a Trailstar

    Tony it's great to see the progress. Your psychology in solitude is recognised and referred to well. I've seen amazement and a wonder in life come to a few folks up there (as you seem to find), and others become a mess. It's clear your filming puts you in mind of those here who tag along "with you", but I wonder what anyone you have encouraged to go up there themselves, made of their experience? It can be a powerful, fascinating, revealing & perhaps healing journey - ideal for NHS funding maybe!

  • @TonyHobbs
    @TonyHobbs  Před 11 lety

    Yup, I always wondered how you ladies manage! Especially if there is no cover nearby! I suppose you just have to get on with it and hope no one looks.
    For me, my water system shuts down if I'm near people, it's a pain at times, so I'd have to either go in shelter or hike half a mile to that distant bush lol! One advantage of solo. Or just a couple. Or a partner.

    My first camp was in a tent but I always had it in my mind to camp as close to nature as possible, you don't need a tent, just make sure everything is up to scratch. Learned a lot the last 18 months. Many in UK use a tent and whilst I'm not alone I wonder if my videos highlight there is an alternative even in the UK. I blame Chris Townsend, he often uses single skin shelters and used this shelter (his not mine here lol) on his Scottish Watershed walk. Good luck :)

I use a alley water bottle filled with drinking water then I heat the water up in a pan then fill the bottle again with hot water I placed the bottle into a wool sock then folding over the sock a couple of times I stick it in my sleeping bag it stays warm for the entire night. the good thing is that you can use the water cup of tea in the morning.chris

    Allow your feet to get cold before bedding down, you'll get in the bag and a warm sensation will stay with you MUCH longer than warm feet that cool down in the bag... Your body may reject this phenomenon...

      Hi Eric, Bess sadly is on her last journey with the angels but she's still walking with us. My new steed is Lassie :)
      I always try to reply but sometimes some slip the net.
      It was one from someone saying but a tent that brought me here, glad he did as I spotted yours :)
      May our paths indeed cross.

    I ought to stick it outside, I also ought to check between ground inside and apex. My December (?) trip gave best idea -5 inside TS and -9 outside I think...! The Trailstar helps but a sealed tent must be warmer (?). Must admit I love being open to outside :). I was cosy :-) had a down coat spare and a jumper that I never needed. I'm really chuffed by it all :-)

    hi how do u keep ur tent warm beside having good sleeping bag?

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  Před 8 lety

      Yes that's correct. The shelter protects from the elements. Rain and most wind.
      Hopefully lol
      The sleeping bag is rated well below what I'd expect to experience, I'm a cold sleeper, so take a warm bag. My head is protected with a merino balaclava.

    Hi Blaze, it's a tarp lol, and I needed space for my dog, but in reality for winter camping the space is very welcome. I'll be using it this winter. Thanks for watching and commenting, always good to get other peoples thoughts. Gets my grey matter working :-). Especially thanks for the sub.

    Just subbed to your great channel, thanks for the vids. Ignore the Trolls mate, most of them never leave their council flats. Look forward to your next adventure.

    Hi Mark, More head room is one reason, I think lol :-) easier to get in and out, don't need to crawl to back. I can put Bess at the back away from cooking. Closer to view. So your like a bit of sheeting in front of groundsheet :-) Can't beat looking out, don't see point of shutting oneself up unless rain or bugs getting in, so keep door open on mids :-) One last thing, not tried it but I could move door if rain got in and be at back just by moving door. I think. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Blaze, out of curiosity, can I ask why you think a smaller "tent" would be better? It's a really interesting thought. Cheers.

  • @TonyHobbs
    @TonyHobbs  Před 11 lety

    Hi Mark, I have an order in with Sean, when he's ready, in the meantime I have the MLD innernet which I uused once last year in Duomid, its good for its small size. My custom inner with Sean is a bit bigger. For the Trailstar again an order is with Sean, but the MLD bug bivi is OK for its size, used once, more room would be advantage. But this stuff is minimalist :-) Dartmoor not too bad for bugs. I'm sure Scotland worse lol!

    Hi Tony. Enjoyed your vis and subscribed. A Question. In an earlier reply yu sais that tou didnt need a closed tent because the warmth came from the clothing but in your commentary you said you awoke at 4 am and was cold. OK, leave th front open but why not have an inbuilt groundsheet to a) minimise ground level drafts and b) to control the internal the chill factor c) to defeat/minimise potential rain problems. Night time kit storage: Damp and spare socks go under arm pits and boots go inside and at bottom of bag. Batteries. You need at least one fully charged spare batteries per piece of kit needing them and these to be kept close to your skin in damp proof packaging in cold weather.Especially phone batteries upon which your life may depend & always assuming you have a signal. Continue having fun and recording.

    Another good video Tony!! I hike/camp the same area. Tempted to replace my tent with a decent tarp (though I do occasionally use a bivvy bag/poncho combo).
    Any chance on doing a video on the kit you take?

    Can I ask why you wanted Bess properly on the bed so badly?
    Also, what stove did you use out of interest? I love the Lixada woodgas stove with meths inside a stowaway pot. And why did you put the meths in your coat? I thought it works fine unless in the extreme minus temperatures :S
    Thanks

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  Před 8 lety

      Hi
      it was very cold and I didn't want her getting cold on the bare ground when she had a bed to protect her from the ground.
      I used back then a fire steel to light meths. it lights better from fire steel if it's not cold meths. now i use a jet lighter in a slightly different stove.
      it's a Caldera cone sidewinder. the stove here is a 12-10. now I use the Zelph stove
      similar but smaller to fit in the pan for stowage

      @clevelandexplorer2221 Před 8 lety

      +Tony Hobbs thanks :) I considered getting a bathtub floor and I'm not used to ground sleeping (been a hammocker for years) but think I'll risk it in a bivvy if it comes in time and a tarp.
      that zephyr stove looks good, I just looked it up. I can't imagine how the cone would be portable, did it unclipped and flatten? bess is a good dog and companion, I wish I had one :p

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  Před 8 lety

      The cone rolls up and fits inside the pot it's designed to fit. Must be correct.
      A dog is a great companion :)

      +Tony Hobbs interesting. I've seen it before on CZcams, seemed to be the almost pseudonymous stove lol. I have two dogs but both are unsuitable for long ventures and mainly for my grans company. I need one for myself for this stuff 😂 haha

    Yes, N7. Funnily enough bought an attachment for Pacer Poles from Pacer this week. Its wrong angle for my use, but a ball head may help. Not used it yet, when the mood takes me. I never know whats next :-)
    I have a gitzo mountaineer lightweight tripod, about 860g, but using a Gorilla pod at moment about 250g! Its OK for the in shelter stuff. I hold camera in hand for the face on shots. I just make it up as I go :-) Seems to work lol.
