  • A full, very detailed, owner's review of my Honda PCX 150. A great 150cc scooter and arguably the best commuter on the market. A little pricy, yet it offers great value and economy.

    Video Overview:
    For those looking for an excellent and reliable scooter that's light, nimble, and fun to ride, the Honda PCX150 is probably your best bet. At the 150cc class, the PCX150 is quick and offers convenience that motorcycles can't offer. I'm very pleased with my 2014 Honda PCX150 and it's a joy to ride.
    This is bigger and better than a 50cc moped. It's not as big or quick as the Honda Forza, but still better than that and the PCX125.
    In this PCX150 review, I give you my pros and cons of the bike while explaining what I like and feel that can improve on this bike. As someone who has both motorcycles and scooters, I can confidently share my review on this bike. You can't go wrong with the PCX150.

    I'm a fan of the Piaggio Liberty because of the larger wheels, but it isn't available in the U.S. Great to see you do this video. The detractors, who are already weighing in, will all be Americans who have never been anywhere.

      Yes. It genuinely surprises me that people have such disdain towards scooters. As someone who has 2 motorcycles AND a scooter, I still love the little thing. It offers convenience that a motorcycle can't offer.

      I think many are concerned about having more power to be able to get out of the way of cars as they tend to dog us. I never knew a 150 has this much power....... so also with the availability of the maxi scooters you raise good question.

      The Piaggio Liberty is now available in the U.S. I do realize that your comment was from 2 years ago though, and it may not have been available then. I do like that the Piaggio has 16” wheels, and is $900 less than the Honda. But for reliability and resale value, I still think I’d choose the Honda over the Piaggio.

    I have to say, this is the most well thought out and very detailed review I have watched so far on the 2013 PCX150 USA model. You answered all my questions from a real OWNERS perspective ( I hate watching "professional reviewers" that ride a bike on a 10 min. test ride, then state their findings as written in stone mater-of-fact this is how it is! ) Hearing it from a long term owner, that is where the real truths come out. Well done!

    I purchased my 2013 pcx 150 brand new when it first came out, and I rode it hard every on the freeway for the past 5 years and its sitting at 15538 miles and I still have only a few cons. The tank size, wind screen, front tire size and width, but all in all I really think this is the best 150 scooter available. Great review on this bike.

    I cant believe how many changes have happened to the PCX. I just got a 2019...it now has ABS, integrated turn signals, a new metal frame that is stronger yet lighter, new and much better dash,LED lights, integrates passenger pegs and the engine has changed a little also. Loving it so far...like you I have a motorcycle (Indian Scout ABS) but for running daily errands the scooter is the way to go.

    Had a 2011 PX 125 that I put 22,000miles on. Great bike, I rode it everywhere daily commute to work, Mardi Gras parade, travels around town and out of town.. New tires at 15K I went though a battery per year for the first two years, then I got one that stayed with me and the next owner now has it. Other than the two battery failures, it ever needed anything but routine maintenance.. Sol the bike last fall because of surgery. I knew I would have been riding long before I had healed adequately. The 125cc topped out qt 57 mph. But it held speed well at 50ph, and I weigh about 200 lbs.. No gripes about brakes. Nevef did a forward wheel stand, but I always had a firm front brake. Rear got to feeling a bit soggy at times. PCX has larger diameter wheels than most scooters. Another Pro "Rock Sta" parking nearly everywhere. The review is right on. Everything else this guy said about the 150 applies to the 125. You can spend more but you won't find a better all around scooter than the PCX.

  • @robertbolin1763

    Just found this video. I have the same model and the big storage in the front of the underside is for a full face helmet. And yes, they are durable AND nimble. I've managed to avoid several "incidents" of being cut off with alertness and the nimbleness of the PCX.
    Lose the hump, trim the screw mounts, and add some padding where they were and you will be much more comfortable.
    Replace the windscreen with a taller one and you will reduce the drag and can cruise at 65 even if you are nearly 6' and 270 lbs. After a recent tune up, I am cruising at 65 on the flats with no wind.
    My fuel gauge seems to be pretty consistent. It starts flashing one dot when I have gone through about a gallon and seems to drop consistently across the range.

    I love Honda and I was between the Honda PCX 150 and the Yamaha 155 Smax. Very glad I got the Smax. Its a bit bigger and fits my frame better. Also, it looks a bit beefier to fit my huge frame. I'm 6'2" and I weight 250lbs. The Smax fits me good and I get up to 75 MPH on the freeway and I'm averaging 85-90mpg.

    Big ups for the scooter love! 👍🏽❤️ All two-wheelers are awesome, and motorcycles are cool, but scooters are just so damn lovable!
    The storage, comfort, weather protection, fuel efficiency, and convenience of scooters is second to none.
    Also, with the warm engine under the storage compartment instead of under your butt makes them a joy to ride in hot weather. In fact, scooters are the ultimate take-out-getting machine because of that. Call in your order, put your pad thai under the seat, and it stays warm all the way home, even in chilly weather.

    • @jseden
      @jseden Před 4 lety

      Nishidake yep! I loved the under seat storage for this reason. Recently upgraded to a 250cc motorcycle though.. ultimately the better vehicle for me. I strongly prefer a manual transmission and the bigger wheels/better shocks really do it for me.
      I also dislike having to remove body panels to get to the engine. I do all my own work so simplicity and easy access were high on my list too

    Great video! thumbs up on the vid too. i am from California and my bro has a pcx and i drove it for a bit and it was nice, now i am in Japan where the Honda's are made and i have 3 scooters and Tomorrow i will get my first Brand new 2017 PCX from "Honda Dream" (in japan honda motorcycle dealership is called dreams, and for cars its called Honda Cars)) ... anyways, paid in full 380,000¥ (about 3,600$) the only extra option i asked for was the rear backrest* that was 200bucks extra, kinda expensive but it will be an original new honda part from Honda.... you are right about the gas tank bigger 2.1 gallons, i am happy about that. it was good to see a LONG video with a nice positive talk about the PCX .... i have a 125cc Honda Wave (like a super cub 4speed semi auto) it can go 126kph(78mph) ... which is faster than your stock pcx , my bro in cali said his pcx can do 79 (few mods) .... but i am getting a JDM pcx 2017, i am hoping to find out if it will go faster than 80mph , 82 would make me happy.... in japan there is no place to speed, but i just wanna know my 150 is faster than my 125 honda. Pcx Hype everyone says, in Japan my Honda Lead 90cc auto is like a baby PCX and that is faste enough but a bit small if i want my gf on back. my 125 is 4 speed semi auto and slim, so i want my girl a bit more comfortable if behind me and i like auto. hehe tomorrow i might make a video similar to yours, but i am so lazy i never edit or post my motovlogs. Love the pcx, i will get all black though. Great video!

    The 2015 or 16 started a new seat style which is a little more comfortable from what I understand. I've ridden mine in rain and in cold weather and it has done well. Mine is a 2015. I have to replace the battery every other year though. I can transport milkshakes under the seat!. I've gotten it up to about 55 MPH. It only feels iffy on split highways and fast roads. (You seem fine on those kinds of roads.) Great bike to learn to turn. Bigger wheels help with the bumps. I have gotten 100mpg too. It's crazy. And I ran out of gas once but literally rolled it into the gas station. That was a little embarrassing.
    I'm going on year 4 on mine and put on 12,000 miles and so far, say for that battery dying over the freezing winters here, it's been bulletproof. And I've gone through a set of tires. The new PCX 150's have ABS. I never locked my breaks. I was really sensitive to the wind at first but less so as I got used to it. I've never scraped a board. LOL. My gas indicator is pretty good so maybe they improved that. I'm okay with the windshield. I have trouble with the mirrors. It takes me about 2 months of riding to adjust them just right each season. I can ride it at night because the light is great. Thanks for the review. I love it too. Ride it everywhere. Oh, and I'm wicked old and a woman. Which shows how accessible this bike is. I hope that doesn't turn men off from riding it, I know how sensitive too many men are around all that, especially motorcyclists in the USA. Men in the USA get indoctrinated every Sunday to run out and buy some huge RAM truck that you need a house mortgage to buy but can't fit anywhere, gets about four miles a gallon, is oversized and is overkill in everyday commuting life. And unlike a truck, you can park the PCX anywhere, it fits past anything and scoots around traffic for pennies.

  • @itsthebike6672
    @itsthebike6672 Před 6 lety +2

    The current competitors to the PCX 150 are Yamaha SMAX 155, or Piaggio Fly 150. The bigger 2.1 gallon fuel tank was first available on the 2016 PCX 150 and up. The PCX 150 has no separate starter motor, it supplies power to the stator to quietly start the bike. After starting, the stator generates electical juice for the ignition, battery, & accessories. The PCX does have a dirty little secret with the valve adjustment maintenance procedure. Their is an huge amount of the bolts and bodywork to remove to get access to the valves for adjustment, look it up on youtube. Expect this procedure to be at the 600 mile mark and then yearly afterwards. The typical charge is in excess of $200. On non-usa models the PCX may have a keyless ignition as well as "an idling stop system, which automatically shuts off the engine after few seconds of idle."

    • @itsthebike6672
      @itsthebike6672 Před 6 lety +1

      As an added side note, when you skip or ignore the valve adjustment procedure, this leaves the exhaust valve/s sticking slightly open; instead of closing all the way. Contrary to public belief, sticking valves get quieter, not louder as time goes on. Exhaust valves sticking open leads to a process called flame cutting which is as bad as it sounds while destroying the valve seat. The labor involved to fix a damaged valve seat is gonna make your wallet cry really hard. As you pile on the miles, you will find that the valve clearance procedure is mostly just a check, because the clearances will stay closer to the middle of the range as the appropriate parts become well mated to each other.

    Great review. From my experience, I had these bikes/scooters in short succession: Wave 110i, SH300i, VFR800F. The Wave is a bit too slow and too small, the SH300i has power, but it is not as nimble as a 125/150 scooter and is hunting at high speeds. The VFR800F is a great motorcycle, but then I decided I prefer relaxed scooters more. So I'm looking for something 125/150ish and this honest review helped me a lot.

    On scooter vs motorcycle: Commuting in town on surface roads, I dodged plenty of trouble from other road users, and I can't remember one time that extra power would have let me "accelerate out of trouble." It was more about being nimble, swerving or stopping quick, where a smaller lighter bike has some advantages. The simpler twist and go operation also helps reaction time and gives you fewer mistakes to make. For the average commuter, on surface roads, I think crash avoidance weighs heavily in favor of scooters like the PCX. For very skilled riders, or on freeways, of course the calculation is different.

    I find that 50cc scooters command a small premium for the fact that you don't need an M endorsement.. at least here in Denver. It's also great to be able to park anywhere and registration is $6 for three years. Biggest issue with scooters in the USA is the fact that most people have been clubbed over the head with the Chinese brands over the years. My self I have always wanted the name brand Honda Suzuki Yamaha but the price seemed high (Quality cost). I am in line to get a brand new Honda PCX (Got turned down for a Burgman 200) and hope to take the handle bars the first of May. As someone who is disabled the 150-300cc range would work for me and still be safe from getting run over. I have plenty of open road here in S.C. and my biggest issue will be .... My fishing poles lol Keep up the good work youngman and enjoy the PCX.

      Thank you, sir! For a lot of people, a scooter is the perfect fit for their lifestyle and needs. It's unfortunate that many who haven't tried scooters like to bad mouth them so much. They can be fun and peppy, and often, much more practical.

    • @charlesdwilson2112
      @charlesdwilson2112 Před 7 lety +1

      True..so very true. I do think that the name brands such as Honda Yamaha Suzuki Kawasaki Vespa etc. set a better price here in the USA many more people would buy them. Now the Honda PCX is just about right in price but could be a little lower. Kymco has the game on right now in the 200cc range but no dealers near me even though the Kymco-USA is 100 miles from me lol. They should class the scooters also in 50cc (50cc-90cc) then 150cc(150cc-175cc) then 200cc(200cc-299cc) then 400cc+. Narrow the market down and produce better quality. The name brands have the quality at a price though. Thanks for the respond and I also agree that the price range to size needs to be reset compared to regular bikes. With my disability the clutch brake issue is a no go. I have R.A. (Rheumatoid Arthritis stage 3-4) so anything lighter and twist and go is what I am researching (even Tao-Tao off brands). I got cleared to get the Honda PCX150 (hope the first of May) so maybe I can enjoy the ride again.

    I relied on a taotao 50 (upgraded it to 70) for a year and it's been one of the most reliable bikes I've ever owned! The thing with Chinese scooters is that most shops wont touch em so you'll have to learn to work on them. People who understand this and don't mind learning how to fix them seem to love em.. parts are dirt cheap and there are many resources online. Most of the bad reviews I've read describe symptoms that could easily be fixed in a few minutes.. or they're expecting Honda quality for 1/4 the price. They're a great deal if you'll put a little effort in and in return you save even more!

    Looks like a great scooter but I like a flat floor as on the ruckus or Vespa as you can carry a gas can or large things that would not fit in the under seat or top box. If I go to get gas for my more or tiller I can put a 10 L gas can on the floor of my ruckus, But the problem with the Ruckus is it is not fast enough to do long trips on as it tops out at 68 kph and down to 50 kph on hills or head winds. I do have a 805 cc bike but for some reason just seam to enjoy the scooters more so will be looking for something in the 150 cc range. Will be giving my motorcycle to my sun as just not riding it enough.
    I do like the upgrades on the 2019 PCX 150, so just mite go that way, and use the Ruckus for running for gas and such.

    I think the 2017 has ABS. Mine (2015) has combined brakes. My mirrors are terrible. I see mostly my shoulder. I ride in strong wind. When I first got it wind terrified me but now I'm okay with it. Practice really. The new 2017 scooters have what looks like a great glove box but haven't seen it yet. I don't mind the fuel gage. I find it a great bike. I put 5K on it in 2016. I'm brand new to riding and glad I learned on this because I might be too scared to ride a larger bike. I've put another 1K on it so far this year. But it's my only bike. Commute mostly. Ride some weekends and that's the only time it lacks a little. When on long rides to nowhere I sometimes wish I had a motorcycle BUT this thing is way more forgiving on mistakes. I've never locked the breaks. Mine seems to stop well but I know no other bike really. Last year, my first year riding, I had to overcome some fears. So I think the other pro with this bike is that if you are determined to ride, to overcome some fears about being out there, it's a much easier bike to learn to control. So it's less likely to rot in the garage than the bigger bikes that get sold with under 2K on them.

      YES! Learning on a scooter was great for me as well and I'm glad I went that route. If you ever wanted to transition to or get a motorcycle, the PCX 150 helps a ton. For my everyday ride, the PCX 150 can't really be beat. It's not unless I take the highway that I need the larger bike. I personally don't like the brakes on the PCX 150. Pretty weak. The mirrors do kind of suck but I've gotten used to them. Wind deflection is minimal, but not terrible. It's not easy to tuck behind the wind shield as you would with a motorcycle.

    I have a 2013 Honda PCX (Its 1st owner). It will run 70 mph making it (Highway Legal) which is very important if you ever want
    to jump on the highway for a short distance and off again without breaking the law in Dallas Tx and to be able to keep up with traffic.
    Mileage is said to be 105 per gallon, I’m heavy at 200 so it’s a little less but fuel economy is one main reason I got this along with it
    being highway legal. The gas gauge is a bit off and doesn’t seem to start moving from full until the tank is about half empty but I keep a watch on it quite often, it’s not a big deal for me and not a deal breaker but I do wish it had a reserve tank just in case it did run empty.
    I do not like how it feels on wet pavement, it just doesn’t feel road gripping like a motorcycle but I don’t ride much on wet roads.
    I thought the price tag was a bit high but it is a Honda and all Honda’s are pretty dependable, it has close to 3k miles on it, I don’t
    drive it every day but it is still great in 2017.
    At high speeds you can tell it’s not a motorcycle, it rides a bit ruff at top speeds and you can’t turn very sharp very fast, if you
    try you will have a feeling of uncertainty.
    Points of Interest:
    If you want a bike for sport and speed, get a motorcycle.
    If you want a good solid bike to get around town, a nice feel, able to get on any road without breaking the law, great mileage, and a bike that has a good company track record for dependable products the Honda PCX is a great sporty looking scooter to enjoy.

    Just keep in mind that this review is of a 2013 PCX, which has very little in common with even a 2014 model and aside from having two (somewhat) similar wheels and handlebar, the 2013 is practically prehistoric compared to the latest model(S). The 2018 and now 19 is so advanced in comparison and it's all for the better and simply awesome. I'm not putting down the 2013 btw, it is (was) a great bike, and I owned two back then, but I wouldn't recommend it today. 2016 was the game changer imho, and highly recommended still.

      Was in a similar spot when I first started. Got the 50cc Zuma and quickly outgrew it. Went to the 150cc and instantly wanted more after a few months. They all had a bit of a learning curve, but were quickly comfortable after a few rides with each. If you're looking for a larger scooter and not motorcycle, you can check out the Forza 300, which is the 300cc version of the PCX. There also a couple Chinese brands out there if you're looking for something cheaper. My biggest issue with scooter is their value. I think motorcycles provide better value for their power to cost ratio. A nice used scooter at a good price, would be a good deal.

    Looking at getting a scooter for my short weekday commute in urban traffic. A scooter seems more practical than a motorcycle for this purpose. Can you tell me how the Honda PCX 150 does climbing hills? I've got a 1-mile stretch going home that averages about 5% grade and peaks to about 9% for about 1/10 of a mile. I'm #215 and my gear might be an additional 5-10#.

    Hello, I am about to buy a PCX 150. I test-drove a PCX 150 (new), and also a used Shi150. I actually like the Shi150 better because it is a step-though. It was easier and more fun to maneuver. But it has 13,000 miles on it. So I am leaning towards getting the new PCX. The price on the used 2010 Shi is $1725 out the door. The price on the new PCX out the door is $3700. The reason I am responding to your video is to ask what size you are? You never brought it up. Are you a short rider? I am 6 1 and 190 pounds.

    • @paulAntill
      @paulAntill  Před 7 lety

      +pat mich hey. I'm a medium sized rider. About 5-10, 160 pounds. I think 3700 is a bit pricy for the PCX 150. I got 2 used, essentially new with like 100 miles on them for 3k.

    • @marshall2
      @marshall2 Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks, Moto. Well, I don't have the luxury of buying used because I can't get financed. Honda Finance will finance me for a new one. But the credit union nor the banks will finance me for a used one (or a new one) because of my high debt to income ratio. Honda Finance doesn't look at this ratio. They just look at the credit score, so I was approved.

      Sorry for the late reply. Yes and No. I did have an accident where ABS could've probably prevented it. But at the same time, had I braked sooner and applied even pressure, plus been more aware, that too would've prevented it. For a first time rider, ABS is a great feature to have, however not necessary. Please let me know if you bought it yet or decided to do something else.

    While the pcx 150 is a phenomenal scooter I wouldn't call it "the best" scooter especially for it size I'd have to give the that title to one of the 150 vespas due to the fact that the pcx is a larger bodied scooter for it size and the affects many aspects such as economy and such because if you look at the Stats the pcx 150 is the size of most Chinese 250s or a Bergman 250 while the vespa 150 is essentially a slightly taller and wider 50

    • @paulAntill
      @paulAntill  Před 6 lety +1

      That's an interesting point you bring. While those are trade offs, I think the pro is that the PCX looks much more sporty and has increased cargo space and a more comfortable rear seat as well. The PCX is more likely to be confused for a motorcycle, for what that's worth. To me, looks are somewhat important. The Vespas have a very classic scooter look. The PCX in contrast looks sportier, rides sportier, and probably has better wind deflection. With that, it very much comes down to preference for which of those features you value most.
