THE TRIAL - teaser - directed by Maxim Didenko

THE TRIAL is an international theatre project inspired by Franz Kafka’s famous novel and Russia’s current reality. Six performers directed by Maxim Didenko (“Snob. Made in Russia” Award 2016 for the best theatre directing), an award-winning director from Saint Petersburg, have created a unique physical performance exclusively for the awakening polyfunctional space of legendary KINO 64 U HRADEB in Mostecká Street in Malá Strana, Prague. The premiere is scheduled for 27th and 28th February at 8 p.m.
Director Maxim Didenko was inspired, besides other things, by authentic transcriptions of examinations of current political prisoners, their correspondence and trial statements. The play reflects on speeches of Soviet prisoners indicted during Stalinism and Nazis sentenced during Nuremberg trials. THE TRIAL thinks about ethical and humanistic meaning of trials and even capital punishment. The performers look into a common human overwhelmed by sinews of trials.
„Kafka’s absurd novels gradually become a picture of Russia’s everyday reality. The play therefore could be interpreted as a warning. The theme described by Kafka one hundred years ago gets topical again and in the wider context.” says director Maxim Didenko.
Six experienced performers lead by Didenko’s directing look for a new theatrical language corresponding with needs of our era. THE TRIAL brings a variety of genres - from clowning to opera, from activist performance to psychological theatre. It connects contemporary dance (so called post-ballet), circus, physical theatre with elements of musical and documentary theatre.
The play is the grand finale of a three-phases’ creative process. In September 2015, there was a selective workshop. The second phase took place last summer - intensive rehearsals, creation of scripts and scores for the performers and a work-in-progress in the legendary KINO 64 U HRADEB. The third phase of this focused creation will take place during the days mentioned above at the same place and will culminate with unique performances on 27th and 28th February 2017.
