  • The Rugrats Movie was released in 1998 after a wildly successful run on Nickelodeon. The film, produced by Nickelodeon, expands on the story of Tommy and the Pickles family as they introduce a new member, baby Dillon or Dill Pickles. The cast gets into an adventure, getting lost in the woods and it's up to Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil to keep baby Dillon safe from harm. Angelica is there too!

    I had the soundtrack for this movie. My mom bought it for me from Borders. And Borders was my favorite store growing up.
    I had actually gotten a CD player for my birthday that same year. And I listened to it, no joke, beginning to end, at least 350 times. Because I listened to it every day for a year straight when my mom got it for me. I treasured that CD, and it was one of my prized possessions.
    My mom also got me the Rugrats movie on VHS, which unfortunately is now frequently found at thrift stores. Mainly because it was released in a clamshell case, and kid's VHS covers in clamshells are less likely to be tossed in clamshells, than the standard cardstock slipcover. But it's also a testament to how popular to how popular Rugrats was in the 90s. That VHS sold millions of copies. And is easily one of the most recognizable VHS covers of the 90s. I watched the tape often. But not nearly as much as I listened to the CD. And it was a very eclectic CD. It had everything from No Doubt, Busta Rhymes, Elvis Costello, Lisa Loeb, Mya, Blackstreet, Lenny Kravitz, Lou Rawls, Iggy Pop, Ra'kim, Devo, and of course the voice cast of the babies. All original songs. Very goated album.

    My opinion on Rugrats. Seasons 1-6 are flawless. Rugrats is funnier to me an adult it hits differently. I appreciate the satire more and the sheer absurdity of the situations these babies get into. Chuckie and Angelica are the best characters. Seasons 7-9 aren't bad. They are very cute, well-written, and wholesome, the characters are all acting the way they always have but it's not as funny as 1-6. I love how Chuckie gets a new sister and a new mom. Out of all the shows that kept adding new characters in the later seasons Rugrats is one of the shows that did the best job.

      Those first few seasons really are great. Perfect episode after perfect episode. I think once baby Dill entered the story and then the expansion with Chuckie, I was "too old and cool" for Rugrats in my head, but I do remember those things happening. I recognize now how important those messages were at a time when children's TV didn't have shows like Bluey. It's cool to see that Rugrats was about showing every form of family and normalizing it.

    I definitely have to agree with you on this one! I too could resonate so much with this film from as a kid to now as an adult with the different situations the characters were facing: from being a younger sibling, having a new addition to the family, wanting to provide for your family in the way you know how, being fearful of change but ultimately facing it and embracing it. I loved this one growing up. I would also like to add that when it came to the show, even though it was still mainly about the babies, there were some moments where we see the adults in certain situations especially if it involved the kids, but we view them from the kids perspectives which I really enjoyed about show.

      I love that we get to see the world from that camera angle for the most part. There is an intimacy and innocence to that. It felt like a real step up.

    Its hard to describe the excitement and anticipation that I had for this movie when it came out. I had already been a huge rugrats fan, literally watching it every single day. No exaggeration. I had a rugrats backpack that I wore to school everyday. I had rugrats folders I put all of my assignments in, along with rugrats pencils I always wrote with. I had a rugrats baseball cap that I wore everyday. I had rugrats bedsheets. I used rugrats toothpaste. My birthday cake was the rugrats themed one from the supermarket. So its safe to say that I was in the rugrats ecosystem, and that the rugrats IP was a huge part of my life as a kid. So when this movie was announced, it was very exciting. They announced the movie publicly and promoted it on Nickelodeon well over a year in advance. And if you watch certain episodes, they were teasing the movie, because Didi was pregnant for a good portion of the episodes leading up to the movie. So when the time came to actually watch the movie, I couldn't be more pumped. Unfortunately, this was decades before the themed popcorn bucket fad, that we have now. Because I know my mom would've definitely gotten me a popcorn bucket. As she knew how much I loved everything rugrats. But there was just something so magical about seeing the show you watched every single day, on the big screen. And of course the screen is much bigger when you're a kid. It was just so exciting. And also sad at the same time. Because I know that no movie I ever watch for the rest of my life will have that same impact on me ever again. I peaked in my theater going experience. Now I go and see a movie, and I consider it an amazing experience if I leave saying "Eh, that was pretty good." That's about as excited as I can get about pretty much anything nowadays.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Před 23 dny

      It's rare to have that type of excitement now. I think that's due to just how much entertainment there is. It's overwhelming. At that point it was a rarity and the fact that Rugrats was so successful before the film came out really did give it big anticipation. I totally get this. I was very similar with the original Power Rangers film.

      We all have a poopy pee joke conversation with ourselves in terms of what we can handle or what we want from entertainment. I felt like I had to voice it here. There is something to be said about it's use in simply showing the humanity of these characters vs. just making a cheap joke. Plus, it was fun to say the words "poopy pee pee" in a video. I have to take those opportunities when I see them.

    This movie is, to this day, my fav movie of all time, closely followed by Lilo and Stitch and Hunchback of Notre Dame. I just can't get through it without crying at least three times, be it when Tommy gives the doctor the chocolate coin or when Tommy cries himself to sleep or when Tommy and Dil hit their breaking point or when everyone wishes for Spike back.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Před 23 dny +1

      I love that Tommy pays the doctor with a chocolate coin. What really works with Rugrats, and why the show and this film were consistently well written, is because they approach everything with innocence. Even when Tommy is mad at his brother, it isn't because he hates him. He's experiencing something new and frustrated with those emotions. The comedy is in the kids trying their best, but it's also where the emotional heartbeat is. Honestly, Rugrats is special and nothing will be like it ever again. It may have been watered down over time, but those initial years and this film are fantastic.

    Yay! The movie I suggested got reviewed. I do have ao much love for this movie. This was the very first movie I ever saw in theaters, opening weekend. I had seen movies in theaters before as a kid, but never opening weekend. It was a different time. There wasn't this rush to watch movies opening weekend, like there is today. It was completely normal to watch a movie 4-6 weeks after it came out. Because the movies wouldn't be released on VHS for a good 4-6 months afterwards. Unlike today where movies come out on streaming 2 weeks later.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Před 23 dny

      When you threw this movie in as a suggestion, I thought it would be an interesting choice as the first comment-generated movie. It's a popular enough franchise, but maybe a film people haven't visited in a while. I certainly had not and I was pleasantly surprised.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Před 23 dny

      I think for me, and others most likely, Dil's introduction into the show changed the dynamic and while I like it here in the film, the crying and consistent move from toddlers having conversations to "baby needs help" was something I aged out of and I stopped watching Rugrats soon after.

    I wrote my thoughts last week, and have been looking forward to comparing notes! (Also, looking forward to watching the next movie, which is new to me. )
    I had forgotten how good this movie is. Granted, if made today they might rethink some of the ethnic humor (sweet natured as it is) as well as the scarier “child endangerment” bits. But there is so much about this film that I love. It’s funny, smart, and looks great. The CGI effects, in particular, have held up well. And then there is the music, which is even more diverse and sophisticated than I remember. (Fred Schneider!) Of course, when I first saw it with my kids in 1998, all they noticed is that the music was funny; a clear indication of how brilliantly balanced this movie is. Obviously, the absurd main plot and slapstick humor are intended for the very young (mostly), but the malapropisms, in-jokes, homages, family conflict, existential angst, and even the music have a special meaning to us grownups. Few films have managed to balance their tone this well, which is why I think this movie should be considered a classic.

      I love that you had something ready to go! I didn't really get into the CG stuff. The "birth of Dill" is a fun way to show without really showing, and you are right! The CG stuff still looks great, as does the use of computers in the hand drawn stuff. I was surprised with how good this movie still looked and it's an example of how computers can get used and not age a film.
