    My very first tank was a 10g my parents got me for Christmas when I was in high school. I stocked it with a pair of dwarf gouramis (got along great with my other fish), a small group of zebra danios (too small of a school), and a trio of swordtails. I shudder now to think I put that combo in there. They ended up moved into a 55g eventually, just because I wanted a bigger tank, but to think they were started in such a small tank.... Ugh.
    EDIT: I currently have a school of 9 chili rasboras in a 6.8 gallon with blue dream and jade neocardinas. It's heavily planted with both submerged and emergent plants. Nitrates stay at 0, so I have to fert regularly. They're GREAT little fish with a super low bio-load. One of the things I love about them is that they aren't skittish. Very personable fish, and beautifully colored to boot!

      i started off the same but also way worse. Mind you at the time I had ZERO idea on how to care for fish and i thought all fish could go together. My first actual tank was a 20g (not that bad) but it was stocked with like 4 goldfish, 3 guppies, 5-6 neon tetras, and one molly. Horrendous choice I know. Looking back on it I wish I could apologize to each individual fish and give them a life they deserve. Now I have a 55g with 9 neon tetras (trying to slowly move it up to about 16 or 18) with some corydoras and am now starting to introduce plants into the tank. I also have a ten gallon with my betta fish Tracy who is absolutely thriving. Sorry for typing up a storm but I related a lot to how you started off and I'm glad both of us have improved on our knowledge of fish keeping and I wish you the very best on your journey

    Definitely agree Chilli rasbora are perfect 10 gallon fish and they are hardy and beautiful. But one thing you left out was they are fussy eaters and require some of the smallest live foods that many fishkeepers only like to feed to fry. As well as tiny dried food such as repashy gel. Also they are sensitive to changes in water parameters like most fish so I'd say ideally a maximum of 25% water change if possible

    • @pixazelz
      @pixazelz Před rokem +4

      They are my less sensitive fish and as long as the food fit their mouths They'll eat anything they even Pick at algae wafers they eat what they shoudln't lol and I saw one hunt a Snail one time ??? ... I've come to the same understanding. I had three glow Tetras in a 10 gallon and just felt like they needed more length to swim. So now they're in a 75 gallon community tank (multiple tank syndrome hit hard) I've got 2 10 gallons with a Betta and snails in each. Another 10 gallon with 5 half grown platys, shrimp, and snails. My favorite is a 36 gallon riparium with platys, zebra danios, and neon tetras. Bigger tank, smaller fish dashing around through plants and roots, love it!

    @gryaznygreeb Před rokem +7

    You were entirely correct. I changed my tanks up due to this video. I had 6 neon tetras in a 10 gallon - you could barely tell they were schooling. I rehomed them to a 30g community tank (after checking with aqadvisor to make sure I had adequate space and filtration) and now they are a very cool school! They follow eachother all over the tank and are very obviously a school compared to in the 10g. I bought them 2 new neon tetra friends and seeing 8 neons school across 3ft looks amazing. The 10 gallon now holds a beautiful white body red finned male betta since I couldn't find chili rasboras locally. Now I just need to get my white clouds a bigger tank.

      3 tips. Make sure you cycle/startup your tank correctly before adding any fish, that’ll make it a lot easier to maintain. Do tons and tons of research on all of it; the cycle, the fish, the equipment, the care, all of it. Last thing be patient and find joy in the success you have, things may go wrong or take a lot of time but your research and dedication will get you there.

    "I'm not saying like you just became a criminal"
    Fun Fact: In Germany, you would be a criminal if you keep any fish at all in a 10 gallon. The minimal aquarium size to keep legally fish in it in Germany is 54 liters (about 14 gallon). So also, the whole fishbowl problem is principally nonexistent here in Germany.

    • @ElvianEmpire
      @ElvianEmpire Před rokem +4

      to add here: the law just says "kept adequately for the species". the 54l requirement comes from a different document (aquarium stores are bound to it, as in, they have to mention it to you), and while it is sensible for most fish, for betta it's a bit weird. having a half moon or other long finned variants in a 15g can be detrimental to them.

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 Před rokem +1

      I thought in EU the minimal requirement was 5.5gal for a fish tank? At least, for a single betta? Idk I'm US and my 5.5gal tanks are single bettas and a few small snails with mostly floater plants, anything smaller I put small bugs in ^^'

    • @MADONITE

      @@discordiacreates6669 You are right, but every Member of the EU can be stricter in its law than the EU pretends (most of the time). The EU itself just sets the limits in which the national laws can operate. So in conclusion: In every EU nation a fish tank have to be at least 5.5gal, but every nation with its own law can go beyond that 5.5gal minimum standard.

      I would say probably not, the normal ones atleast. Dwarfs for sure yeah. Medaka's get to about 1.5" and are schooling so the normal one's I would avoid, probably best for 15 gallon minimum. Endler's are similarly sized however they can be kept without a large school like medakas. Dwarf's are 2/3 the size so I would say it could work.

They hardly get scared by anything and honestly are kinda derpy, often missing the food they are trying to eat😂 overall they are a super chill vibe fish and really pretty, just know that some may not color up as beautifully as you see on CZcams if you don’t have many shadowed spots in your tank.

    My 10 gallon started out with 6 Leopard Danios, 6 Pygmy Cory's, a Dwarf Powder Blue Gourami ,three nerites, and a Cappuccino Lava snail. It worked out well, but the Danios were definitely too big for a ten gallon. They lived well enough though, only to die from genetic malfunction (as is the danio way).
    Currently, I have a Betta, Khuli Loaches both black and striped, and Amano Shrimp, along with the three nerites, and the lava snail. My wife is not a fan that more than half our fish hide all day. But Khulis be Khulis. The shrimp took about a month to get used to us.
    Both iterations have pest snails. The first tank started with Ramhorns, and eventually pond snails over took them. The current tank, I thought I had avoided them, but after two months, they're suddenly visibly in the tank. The just took their time to appear.

    The key to male/female guppies in 10, is a 2.5 Gallon to raise fry next to it and a 55 gallon next to that full of cichilds to cull weak, ugly, excess fry. Especially if you are like me and dont have the heart to cull with clove oil. If you are breeding non generic guppies tho you can probably sell the sub-adult to your LFS for a few bucks.

    Year and a half ago I started keeping aquariums again. I started with 12 pygmy cories in a 24 gallon display tank and 12 lambchop rasboras in a 10 gallon quarantine tank. And soon it became very obvious how these sizes of aquariums are totally wrong for these fish. 12 pygmy cories in the 24 gallon were literally disappearing - the aquarium looked empty from how under-stocked it was. If I would not have had problems with my pygmy cats, I would have added double (if not triple) the amount of them in 24 gallon. Lamchop rasboras on the other hand looked very crowded in 10 gallon. It looked like they were struggling for swimming space and they were fighting a lot over territory. Now they live in a 20 gallon tank and are not fighting anymore. But to be honest even this 25.6 inches long tank looks like its not giving them enough space to school around.

    I have a 16 gal Fluval Spec which in reality is like a 13 gal with a 3 gallon space for the filtration chamber. I had a breeding pair of Gardneri Killifish and 2 mystery snails. I lost the female to internal parasites unfortunately but I saved the male with Fritz Paracleanse. That tank fully planted with anubias, elodia spider wood, and river rocks is a palace to him compared to how they are kept with breeders in shoebox sized tanks. The male leaves my snails alone and basically acts as a more active Betta. We really should normalize Non-annual Killifish as Betta alternatives because they are really low maintenance. A Male killifish is a perfect 10 gallon showpiece fish

    My trustee Fish Shop's owner keeps some cubic planted nano-tanks stocked with fish like Chili Rasboras, Endler's Livebearers and Green Neons or with Red Cherry shrimps directly in the entrance room and they are absolutely spectacular. I've kept Neons and Cardinals (and now Congos) in 40- and 50-gallons and I must say they seem to absolutely love all of that space, thus forcing them into a 10-gl. doesn't sit well with me. I'd say even a 20 is at the very limit for them (and absolutely a big "No" for Congos! - For them, at least double the capacity is the bare minimum), they still would feel cramped.

    I have a 14 gallon (54l EU), and I started off with Chilli Rasboras and Galaxy Rasboras right away. Now after almost 2 Years of having them I must say that I wouldn't necessarily keep them together anymore, or at least keep the group of Galaxies minimal in comparison to the Chilis. The Galaxies where so happy in the tank that they started very vigorously to show breeding behavior (which is very interesting to watch ngl). I had some babies pretty much instantly.
    But they where so territorial that they started to harass the Chili's, so most of them where hiding behind the plants all the time. I made other mistakes like having my light to bright which have contributed to this problem.
    I sadly had a dropsy outbreak relatively early in my 14gal journey so I must have taken it in with the fish (it was a new stocking and both fish where in the same display tank at the pet store so quarantine wasn't really sufficient anyway. Mind you I was a bloody beginner). The outbreak reduced mainly some of the Galaxies, which was really sad, but I got a hold of it eventually and now everyone is happy and healthy.
    I just noticed how the Chillis are out more often. They are much calmer in general. Aaaaand the Galaxies have a bioload that's unbelievable lol. It just seems like so much poop that's coming out of them. So when I start another tank someday, I would go with the Chillis all the way. They can get older anyways :)

    Black Skirts are one of the bigger tetras, so I'd hardly lump them in with neons. As far as stocking goes, it hinges on the filtration and maintenance. Tank dimensions also play a role. A 10g cube is going to be much worse than a 10g long.

    So I have question as a new fish keeper. My first tank is a 10 gallon and I have built a custom 3 gallon sump with a bunch of extra filtration. I have a school of 10 rummy nose tetras, 11 neon tetras, 10 pigmy corys, 5 kughli loaches 1 amano shrimp, and one shortfin betta. I got a longer tank so they have lots of horizontal swimming space, nice sand and soil substrate, live plants, on the bottom and floating plants. As long as I make sure the water conditions are good for them and everyone is eating is that alright? The fish seem very happy despite this being considered overstocked to many people. I would agree if the 10 gallon didnt have my sump but the water quality seems very good and they seem to have enough space to swim and make teritories in the plants.

    • @jenjen3245
      @jenjen3245 Před rokem

      Don’t stress. He’s correct. They’re tiny. They get to about 3/4 of an inch max. Weirdly, the images he used in the video was maculata dwarf rasbora which is what I keep. It’s a cheaper option that don’t get as rich red but are still beautiful.

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 Před rokem

      If the tank is heavily planted but not to the point of restricting fish movement and is well maintained with tank parameters then the stocking amount is on the higher end, lower end if there's few or no live plants and minimal maintenance. Though which is which on those dwarf rasboras, I'm pretty sure the chilli, exclamation point and phoenix rasboras all get mixed up, but a full inch in length should be an outlier for all three if you get an unusually big one or they REALLY like your food choice ^^'. Hope that helps any bit, I'm currently looking for some more phoenix rasboras for a 20gal and they're one of the brighter options of them ^^
