Learn to build a DIY organic Walstad inspired ecosystem aquarium where beneficial bacteria, aquarium plants, and foodweb microbes create a harmonious balance and lots of biodiversity. Gain a deeper understanding aquarium biology and how these self-regulating systems can reduce the need for cleaning and frequent water changes and provide a healthier habitat for your aquatic pets. Don't miss out on this enlightening journey into the world of natural aquariums and get your healthiest Bettas, Goldfish, Puffer fish, tetras etc. possible!
You can either spend your time endlessly seeking after a spotless aquarium, slowly killing your fish, by attempting to clean the water, prevent algae and vacuum the gravel. If you listen to Father Fish and learn about the deep substrate aquarium, you can forget all of the above and enjoy your fish with a clean healthy aquarium.
A balanced aquarium is healthy. A sterile aquarium becomes deadly very easily. Protection from pathogens is accomplished not with poisons but with healthy microbes. If your aquarium is balanced with a wide diversity of healthy microbes it will prevent dangerous pathogens from infecting your fish.
We at Father Fish are very serious about helping you have the healthiest aquarium possible.

3 months ago I started in this hobby knowing nothing. I bought a bunch of fish in a tank from Petco and put it all together and put the fish in and then started watching videos. Then I realized that I made a grave mistake. I checked the water parameters twice per day and continuously changed the water to make sure the ammonia wouldn't kill my fish, I threw some mud down from a local bog and some Dead leaves that had fallen off some trees and there and within a few days my ammonia was zero and nitrites were zero in nitrates were rising. I didn't learn the other way, I learned your way. Thank you so much. I just put leaves and debris that the fish can feed on and I'll feed them brine shrimp and bloodworms occasionally but you doctor fish have made this so much easier. I don't have to worry about them because they have plenty of plants and substrate to hold bacteria and places to hide and a lot of space and everything's been Rock solid stable. My water parameters have not changed and when they come back after a week vacation my fish are nibbling on things in the tank and are hungry but are still doing fine. I've been following your advice and have had great success.

You are such a breath of fresh air. For 15 years, I struggle with my tanks, doing what the LFS's said to do, and then I found your channel. What a revelation! I have a 10 gallon tank that I set up with your method 10 months ago, and the tank is absolutely beautiful. Now, I never do water changes in this tank, and it is thriving. I set up my 29 the same way a month or two ago. I'm still waiting for the plants to "take off", like they did in the 10 gallon, but I see some signs of this happening soon. I definitely want to do the food jar thing. I also need to feed the 29 and the 10 gallon more with dried leaves. I am very happy so far. I am soon going to setup a 5 gallon nano tank with this method to see how it goes.
Thanks again for all that you have done and are doing for the fish keeping community.

🙋🏾‍♀️Father Fish, I bought a tank, cold water fish and a whooooooole plethora of bottles of chemicals to keep the water ‘balanced’ and the fish healthy. I was also told, don’t put real plants in the fish will eat them. Buy these pretty plastic plants, and brightly coloured gravel….and I DID. At home, water changing and doing strip tests like I understood them. I didn’t. Before long the fish were belly up.😭 I went back. Same guy said. Oh here, take these 2 fish on the house. Use this ‘Aqua clear’ it will keep the ammonia away for at least 6months, only cost £7. And get a better filter £28 So i bought them 😩. Within weeks the fish were belly up. I dumped the tank outside. It filled with rainwater. Over time, I saw the most amazing creatures thriving in that murky water…for free. I watched that tank for a year. I wanted to take it to my school children but didn’t want to disturb it. How I wish I saw your channel years ago. Every word this man says is true.

I grew up with the books saying, change your water, boil everything, don't bring stuff in from nature, buy it! Pet shop owners saying medicate, medicate, medicate! Always when buying a new fish, medicate! I was going through new fish and expensive plants for a LOT of money! Eventually I got tired of it. Kept feeding but didn't do much else. Cleaned the front window pane and rinsed the filter material with cold water. And that's about it. I started adding pretty wood. Leaves..oooh a pretty plant from the lake! Etc, etc.... And you know what? The cycle of death stopped. I have fish that are almost ten years now. Who know me and come up for a little rub. 😅

We have had more success in our two ponds that we basically routinely forget to even check on, than in some tanks we put work into, with active filtering and water changes. I have seen first-hand how nature keeps itself by putting my camera underwater and watching for hours. It's fascinating. It may look like there isn't any life down there from the surface, but there are hundreds of thousands of **visible** creatures living down there. It's daunting to think about the ones I can't see.

I appreciate someone wanting to replicate as close as possible an environment for their fish as they would experience in nature. My goal right now as a beginner, is to cultivate a balance of necessary bacteria in my 10 gallon tank. My approach is to use Prime to detox the ammonia and nitrites for my fish until I see a low percentage of nitrates in the water. I plan to eventually slowly begin to introduce live plants into the tank. So far I've been able to keep a Platy and Cherry Barb alive for 3 weeks.

This is such a brilliant outlook on how to have a wonderful aquarium, this is one of my favourite videos, I have thought about this and followed this Father Fish philosophy and been rewarded with a fascinating aquarium I can’t take my eyes off. There is so much healthy diverse life in my tank it’s wonderful, I seem to discover new things most days, so many different micro creatures swimming about I love it!. The water is clear but full of wonderful life, I am growing baby goldfish in it at the moment, a happy accident, and I don’t even need to feed them, the aquarium is feeding them naturally. It’s such a pleasure. I am already planning my second aquarium, bigger and better, using of course some of the materials, substrate, rotten leaves, wood, water, from this aquarium. Cheers Father Fish, you have enhanced my enjoyment of this great hobby no end.

I really appreciate this video and FF's approach to keeping a fish tank. I naturally have adopted this type of approach. In my childhood my family kept a lot of fish...and the fish that did best were in the outdoor pond. 20 years ago my family was under the impression of keeping a very clean tank, but I observed as a child that my dad's overcleaning had killed our fish. Now that I'm older and have restarted this hobby again, I'm working with nano tanks and have found a beautiful and natural way of successfully keeping/maintaining 3 ecosystems. No fish deaths to date :)

I had an aquarium years ago. It was a successful population of fish. One by one they died over the course of several years. For maintenance of that tank I did 20% water changes about every 60 days... but it was when the tank was neglected a little bit that the convict cichlids we had started to reproduce. We got a few of them out of the tank and raised them to adults before getting them back in the original tank. Unfortunately I had to abandon it and over time the fish died of natural causes and I put the hobby to rest. It started at my parents house and I didn't have room in my apartment for a 90 gallon tank. I just purchased a 40 gallon aquarium and purchased the substrate mix from your store and I'm super excited to try a natural habitat. I'm positive that your methods are so much better for the fish. It makes so much sense that supporting all kinds of life in the aquarium allows for constant food and a stress free habitat.

Now I understand why a friend of mine's fish developed healthily in a cement tank with turbid water and limbs. I have another friend of mine who I didn't understand why his fish developed and bred very well in a dirty aquarium that he told me he hadn't cleaned in months and mine where I cleaned and changed the water and my fish died. Now with this explanation everything makes sense.

I have a very clear water heavy planted 75 gallon and a dark tannin heavy driftwood 40 gallon and I notice that I watch my 40 gallon far more. There’s something far more fascinating about the natural look.
Though in my case I don’t need to water change either of them. I just run more filtration on the 75.
