    I've always kept my betta in heavily planted community aquariums. Yes they do eat shrimplets and fish fry but since both shrimp and fish breed copiously I have no problem housing a wee predatory fish with them and feel that it gives extra quality of life to that predatory betta

      Arguably having a predator in your tank encourages more natural behaviour from other fish as well. To an extent.

    I love adding Bettas to my aquariums! I have never had issues with aggression in many tanks. They're extremely curious fish that love to explore and interact. I have a couple that even played with or teased others. Very fun and very pretty. Thank you for sharing this! I don't think anything should be alone that doesn't 100% require it.
    Recommendations for Betta tanks... Don't allow fake decorations with holes in it. They'll go in and come out, until they don't and get lost and die. It's dark in there, they can get lost. And, long fins do best and live longer in very low/minimal water flow. :)

    There's lots of prejudice against betta in betta keeping groups. Most betta groups on Facebook will ban you for even suggesting that bettas be community fish. Not knowing anything about it, my betta has been living peacefully with multiple fish in our tank

    Craig told me that a Betta is what we call in England a Siamese Fighting Fish. I have avoided them even though they are so beautiful. A friend bought 2 and put them in their community tank. The next morning everything was dead apart from one Betta. The problem they made was to have two in the same tank. Our local Fish Store has them in really small containers no bugger than two coffee mugs. I don't know much about them but it looks cruel to me. I would love to take one and home it. So I'll see what you have to say and reply to my comment Alex. Thanks as always buddy. Hey, my green hair algae issue has gone. Thanks again. Love ya buddy 🥰😘🤗

      Righty, I have Bristlenose Pelcs along with fry. Ember Tetra, Fire Nose Tetra, Molly, Platy, Lime Rasbora, Chili Rasbora, Guppies, (all with constant fry) African Dwarf Frogs, Nerite Snails and some Pond Snails. What do you think ? Could I home a Betta and give one a wonderful life ?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  Před 11 měsíci +3

      So the betta may chase some guppies around if they have really flashy looking tails that flitter in the water...and it may eat newborn guppy fry... that being said, in the opening shot of fish footage in this video, i showed and old tank with guppies, tetras and plecos all living together fine.... all female bettas... or one male betta alone will rarely cause a problem. However i do wonder if the frogs would trigger their hunting mode...just because their legs could be grabbed easily....at the same time, i know of people who have kept those 2 creatures together peacefully.
      If you can get a betta thats not from a huge farm/big box pet store...its more likely to also be more peaceful usually, since most european and home breeders raise betta together until 4 to 6 months old...so theyre familiar with community stimuli.
      Id say give it a go, but just keep an eye on it for the first few days... and give it a decent clump of floating plants and or guppy grass/pearl weed/hornwart so they can make a little nest in the top corner and feel safe, and ideally a bit shaded from direct light too.
      Good luck my friend!

    Ok, awesome vid Mr Alex shisho, but what about a plakat Betta boy in a 6g cube? He's very, very food oriented so I'm afraid neocaridina are out, but I really need some clean up helpers and buddies, but I'm cramped on space. Mostly clean up help as he's in a very planted with lots of leaf litter tank with natural light, so we tend to get algae.
    Also, what do you think the smallest tank would be ok for those golden danio to live their best life? I live those guys but for health reasons (flipping arthritis and lupus😖) I'm limiting myself to 10g max. I have a 10g moss carpet tank w 6 CPD'S and a ton of snowball shrimp, could I add a cpl danios? Would they eat CPD fry? I'm trying to community breed.

    Rescued my Betta from a cup in a supermarket were he had ick and a torn fin. I quarantined him and cured the ick. And he has some permanent ripped fins that healed well without it affecting his swimming. He lives with two black mollies and a blue three spot gourami in a full planted 40 breeder. Along with four separate types of snail from small bladder and Malaysian trumpet snails to large rabbit and mystery snails. When I added the gourami I thought I might have to move the Betta to my backup 10 gallon. But all four fish swim around together and generally seem to enjoy each other. The betta like to follow the mollies around. And the gourami doesn’t mind the betta at all. It is worth it to add a betta if it is possible. Just be sure to have a backup plan if any of the fish don’t get along with your betta or vice versa.

    Here in the UK my local fish shop wont even sell you a Betta and free swimming fish for the same tank. They will supply Ottos and other bottom feeders. Whilst they may appear to get along the Betta will always be stressed and it's lifespan shortened as a result. What are your thoughts?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  Před 6 měsíci

      I mean, in the wild betta live with many species of other fish, but specifically, gouramis, rasboras, grass carp, swamp eel species and danios... so I think its fine as long as the betta has space for a nest and 6 to 9 x 6 to 9 inch surface territory with plenty of plants and hardscape to hide near

    I added a pair of peacock gudgeons and they are nipping and tearing my betta’s fins. My tank is heavily planted. Is there something I can do to minimise that? Thanks!
    Also my peacock gudgeons are not really staying together. The male chases away the female on sight which I don’t know if it’s normal

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  Před 2 měsíci

      Yeah they can be grumpy...it depends on how they grow up, and if he's wanting to spawn ...or get rid of her. If it's for spawning, look for nose to belly attacks by the male, and then twisting around one another ...lastly if the male is posing with fins all big and just floating near the female's view.... but if it's straight fin nipping and or gill plate attacks, the I split them up for a few days minimum. Add some more plants that are fine leaf... water sprite, ludwigia or wisteria ...guppy grass, just interpret their line of sight

    I need your help, please! I prepared a 5gal. Bowl for my first betta. Dirt and sand substrate ,live plants . Wood, small sponge filter, heater . Maple leaves. Pretty much like my 2 other bigger tanks. Then I added the betta . All was well. A couple of days later i fed my betta. Frozen Bloodworms. Couple of days later I fed him brine shrimp. The next day all hell broke loose. Ammonia and nitrites. Waterchanges daily, treatment with Seachem 😊Stability and Pristine. No food. Water is no better the next day. Repeat. Water is not better the next day. Today I did a 90% water change and repeated treatments. Water is testing good.
    Am I doing something wrong? It's my first betta. Please advise me. Thank you so much for any help you can give me!!!

      Sounds like the soil is leaching through to the water and has ammonia. Id remove the fish into a jar for a few days of tap water dechlorinated... keep testing the bowl...but itll need to sit up to 5 or 6 weeks for bacteria to colonize the plants and rocks you have in it, with beneficial bacteria usually.

      @jablastoff5237 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@Fishtory She never got one, fortunately, but it didn't seem from a lack of effort. She was actually flinging herself out of the water lunging after them, they were darting as fast as they could go all around the tank. It was heavily vegetated so they were able to use that cover to keep one "step" ahead (plus they were just overall faster than she was). Definitely did not seem to just be a false charge or just "showing who's boss" or anything, she acted more aggressive than I'd ever seen her. At that point I wasn't waiting to find out what happens next, lol, and removed them to another tank where they were very happy (and not chased by anything).

    I really don't know what to do about my samurai dragon scale plakat Astroid he killed a nerite and then I tried him with one my largest otocinclus but he harassed her to the point she was so stressed she wasn't swimming properly so obviously I took her out.
    I really don't like having a tank without some sort of clean up crew but am scared for anything I put in, wondering if i should try a single mystery snail given how large the are ir can be?!
    I know he will never be a community guy 😅 but I don't like not having some sort if clean up crew, do you think a mystery snail could manage ir even survive his extremely heightened attitude, remember he is a killer of a nerite (I had that nerite 8+ months in another betta community tank he was dead with 4 days if being in Astroids digs)
    Astroid is in a 25l equivalent to 5 US gallons.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Whoa bummer. Usually they dont hunt nerites. Are you feeding frozen and or any live food? It can sometimes alter a betta to expect small bite size food units and not try hunting down other fish and inverts as much. Also believe it or not- large amano shriml usually will hold their own with most bettas. Also if his tank is heated, keeping it closer to 74 f. Or so, can help with aggression and reducing their urge to harass or hunt other critters. Just some ideas to consider if any of those things are not in place.
      But sometimes you just get extremely agressive bettas too.

    • @littlenikki9539
      @littlenikki9539 Před 11 měsíci

      @@Fishtory hey. I think Astroid just wouldn't stop going for the nerite because it was brightly coloured that's my take on it and he was just relentless, I really thought the oto would work because they kind of blend in but whenever she moved or was swimming across open space he would just go for her so had to remove her. I feed a range of granulated pellets like fish science the tropical fish granular and frozen blood worms usually every other day and they get live brine shrimp, daphnia, blood worms and fruit flies about once a week when I go to my LFS (this diet is mostly for my bettas, but my pygmies eat bloodworms and the granular sinking pellets too), I also put about 1/4 of an algae wafer in my community tank for the otocinclus etc but everyone has a go at it. So that is mostly my diet for my fish overall.
      So for Astroid when I get up I give him around 3 of the fish science granules and maybe depending on how his stomach looks (because he's incredibly active always torpedoing around his tank) then I might give him another two and then in the evening before their lights go out hand feed a couple of bloodworms and I don't necessarily do that every day but I recognise I feel Astroid more than my other Betta Neptune because he is 10× more active given him being a plakat he is more than half the size of Neptune and that isn't even including dragging a long flowing tail which Neptune has because he is a delta.
      So I would say Astroid is a little bit over 1/3 of Neptunes overall size, just trying to give you a picture of how and why I feed them differently, as you know different fish different requirements.
      I'm relatively new to TFK September in fact but am a fast learner and incredibly passionate but would rather ask for advice from someone like you on YT who I know has experience and knowledge of what you are talking about.
      So I really cannot stand not having a clean up crew but I really have to take the well-being of whichever animal goes in there and I know amano' are quite hardy but would still be nervous, when I first got Astroid it was between him and and betta a beautiful purple delta and I let a little boy choose and one of the guys who work there tried to encourage me to get him and I know why it's because they knew he wouldn't be suitable for any sort of community tank, he was the only betta in the betta row who was on his own the others has pygmies, cherries and amano' co-inhabiting with them and the reason they were saying that is that fish shop always want people coming back for more and they knew me getting this fish would mean that.
      I am not the kind of person who will go back and forth to my LFS and just buying and trying tank mates in the hope that it'll work but a high probability he animal will be severely harassed or killed, I'd like to a tank mate with at least some certainty it may work?
      So you think an amano may be something that could work out?
