I went to your store and I was hoping to find some tanks since you were stressing the fact that they needed to be in certain kinds of tanks. The ones I've seen get low reviews or don't have the proper filter or a place for a heater and I'm very frustrated trying to find a proper tank. I just lost one of my betas that I really loved and it's really freaking me out because I have another beta and I don't want to lose him.

The reason is that they are bought within 1-3 days of us getting them and any bettas who are with us longer than 5 days (which is very rare) will get a 3 or 5 gallon tank to themself :) we also make sure whenever anyone buys a betta that they get a 3 gallon tank or larger and a heater.

My kid’s school had a fair two years ago and one of the booths gave away tiny goldfish as a prize. Needless to say my kids came home with 4 tiny goldfish.
Fast forward 2yrs later and those 4 fish are still alive and are currently in a 36gal aquarium. Fun fact, our 4 fish are the only ones to survive longer than a month. All the other parents I know who took home fish said theirs died within the month (some within the week). It made me sad because I know most of those goldfish were tossed into a fish bowl.
Goldfish aren’t my favorites to keep, but I refuse to condemn them to a miserable life. It’s not hard to do the right thing, do a little research, and have a quality setup that won’t break the bank.
These 4 goldfish did jumpstart my interest in having a freshwater tropical tank. We are finally at the part where we can buy the fish and introduce them to our second 36gal tank. I also blame quarantine for my sudden interest in keeping fish. (And my son’s terrible allergies to all things furry)

I got my first fish when I was about 7 or 8, and I feel so bad for him! My mother told me she knew ALL about fish keeping. She put him in a tiny little bowl with a single plant, no filter, and fed him regular food instead of betta pellets specifically for bettas. Me, not knowing any better, just thought it was cool to have a fish. He died a few months later when my mother damaged his tail and he became unable to swim well. However, I spend more time with my father now, who actually DOES know how to take care of fish and has a 55 gallon tank with thriving fish at the house. He inspired me to try again at having a fish, so now I have another betta, who lives happily in a well maintained, 5 gallon tank. I do not regret anything I've done with my current betta and am so happy I can provide better lives for these fish. :)

The best solution for feeding a betta blood worms from a frozen cube is to place the frozen cube on a piece of plastic wrap. Fold the plastic wrap so it covers the cube and smash it with a meat maillot.
I then put the smashed bloodworms in a container with a lid and place it in the freezer.

Thank you!!!!! I've been taking care of bettas for 6 months now and my family doesn't understand why I'm "treating them like royalty." No matter how many times I explain it, they simply don't understand that the decorations I get for them, the filters I spend weeks choosing, the medicines I buy, even some toys (like the mirror one) are so that my babies can live and not just survive. "BuT tHeY'rE jUsT fIsH" yeah okay, but it's also a living creature that I have taken into my care. Not my fault that I can see these little fishies as my babies and love them like they were any other animal.

My family is the same. A month ago, I didnt really know anything about keeping fish. One day, my mom showed up with a 10 gallon tank with a filter and two goldfishes. She filled the tank with plain tap water and DUMPED them in. Tank wasnt cycled, she didnt acclimate them, and didnt dechlorinate the water.
Its no surprise they died 5 days later. Whats funny is my mom blamed me for their death. When I started to point out all the things she did wrong, both of my parents said, “Forget about it! Im not spending anymore money on a fish. They dont need all that. Believe me. I kept a goldfish in a bowl before and it lasted months so stop wasting my time.” CANT YOU BELIEVE THAT 🙄
They gave me, a 15 year old, a fish tank and some fish, then told me that its my responsibility. You know what I did? I cycled my tank, spent over $100 of my own money for fish supplies, and bought a betta. My parents still yell at me for taking care of a living thing.

My kid and i went to the store and bought him a 5 gallon aquarium, heater, better filter, better food etc. i feel bad for those couple weeks of mistreating my fish 😱. I wouldn't recommend keeping two chihuahuas in a 75 gallon like that. Both tend to stay towards the bottom of the tank and can be aggressively territorial during feeding time. Chihuahuas weren't meant to be kept together. I'm glad you did a species-only set up, but a chihuahua would be much happier without any other dogs to compete with.
As a side note, a bare bottom tank is easier to maintain, but I find a dark substrate really brings out their color and gives more surface area for bacteria to break down their waste.

Those filtered nano kits are definitely better than an unheated or filtered bowl, that being said those only one I would even consider buying is the fluval spec, seeing as it comes in a 5gal size. The minimum for a betta is five gallons, even then a ten is much more suitable. Bettas are curious, energetic, constantly exploring they’re environment, building nests, interacting with things, etc, If that’s not your experience with them, than you are doing something wrong, or the fish is old/sick. The misconception of them being lazy fish comes from how they’re treated. If their water isn’t warm enough, or if they’re in pain they will be VERY sluggish. And, long finned bettas are a bit slow because their finnage is so heavy, but their still veryyyy active. They don’t like dirty water, they like tannin rich water. They don’t like small spaces, they come from knee deep marshes that go for miles and miles. They often have constipation from overfeeding sure, but it’s also due to the fact that they thrive on a frozen/live food diet, as they are carnivores that need lots of protein and fiber. Back to sluggishness, It could also be that the filter flow is to high and pushes them around, or they feel much to exposed and would benefit from more plants. Basically, all the betta misconceptions come from a lack of understanding of their needs. ANYWAY rant over I just like bettas a lot haha Mine are very precious to me, I’m currently setting up a 24gal riparium for a wild betta, and a new ten gal!

As a pet store manager I can definitely offer my input as to what goes on, and the misconceptions customers have. Yes bettas can definitely 'survive' in something small, and there are reasons as to why they can survive that way. But there is a difference between surviving and thriving. In a pet store, the way that animals are kept are for temporary selling purposes, and not because that's how they should be kept for the rest of their life. This is the big mistake customers make. I keep the fighters in our store in something smaller, generally 2-3 litres, but at home I keep them in about 20-25l. But when I explain this to customers they often say 'well you keep them in something small here'. Yes it's true, but pet stores also keep cats and dogs in a pen, and 50 goldfish in a 100L or less aquarium. We get paid to maintain these a lot more regularly than you would want to spend years doing at home for free, and these animals are there for a short amount of time, generally a few days to a week. I literally get my phone out and show them my tanks to prove that they can be in something bigger.
The other issue, is that a lot of pet stores are required to sell small 2l 'betta tanks'. I have them, and I hate them. I literally tell customers 'look, I sell them because I have to, but these are the bigger options I have that would be more suitable'.
Please do proper research before buying an animal, and don't presume that the way you see an animal displayed in a pet store is how they are required to be kept beyond the week they spend there.

@@DanishButterCookie you misunderstood his point. He works for a major retailer, and the company requires that he sells 2l tanks as part of his stock.
As he mentioned he does point them in the right direction to buy a proper sized tank. I'm 50 and have have kept fish since I was 8 starting with a 10 gallon freshwater to a 150 gallon reef tank. My 14 year old has a Dumbo betta in a 10 gallon tank with only a few 2" Amano shrimp for company. That's as small as I would go personally for a betta with or without tank mates. Also I'd have a 20 gal long if you plan to have a Bristlenose Pleco, Clown Plecos, Kuhli loach, Cory catfish (6+ in a school) Neon Tetras (6+ in a school). Keep to the 1" per gallon "general" rule for freshwater if buying schools of fish. Make sure if buying a Pleco you're getting the smaller versions and have at least a 20 gal long tank. The larger ones get up to 18" while the Bristlenose Pleco & Clown Plecos stay closer to 3" max.

my boyfriend always wanted a betta
I decided to get him one and teach him about the proper care of fish
(I've had fish before, which were sadly killed when i was on vacation. my parents forgot to care for them and when i was back from my 2 week school trip, they were not once fed.)
even where i live, where all animal life, even for fish is something that stores are honest about, betta's are the most misinformed
My boyfriend thought those little cute tanks were cute, i said no, i'm getting him the big tank we have at home.
It's nice to see the betta be happy with live plants, some toys and a clean tank.
I don't think he would've been as happy as he is now in a small bowl with a tiny plant.

I want to thank you. I got a 20 gallon tank for Christmas last year. It took me 3 months to cycle the tank. I added minor tetras because they were cheap to help cycle the tank. I added ottos and a pair of corries last I added A pleco. Over 9 months. My goal was to add a betta. Something just wasn't right. The preset heater just wasn't cutting it. The tank was at 72 degrees. I knew a beta would be ok but not thrive. I wanted my rescue beta to thrive. My least heater gave out. I bought a new heater and while I was buying the heater noticed they had Betas on sale. So after the new heater stabilized I went to buy my Dream Betta. Keeping in mind the tetras might be fin nippers a "common" Betta would be a good choce. For $2.95 (there was 3 to choose from) I choose one that was lavender with pink fins. My husband asked why not all, why not buy the more expensive. I responded only one. This is the one. His food was3X what he cost. He is amazing! His colors responded!! He went from lavender to a blue body to red fins. He is so sassy.. He doesn't take anything from the other fish. He has so much personality.

When I had my largest tank, a 50 gallon, with community fish such as Zebra Danio's, Cory's, Tetra's, a fresh water Angel and a 3-spotted Gourami, I fell in love with a royal blue Veil-tail Betta. My fish guy warned me not to put him in a community tank, but I did. He lived for 5 years and his favorite friend was my Gourami. They hung around together at the top an he never once got in a fight. I cried when he died.

I'm always so confused why pet shops DON'T advocate for larger tanks for bettas instead of tiny bowls. Larger tank=more money and you can add so many more decorations and accessories which is even MORE money for the store while keeping the fish happy. I think it would be amazing if large pet stores started selling betta kits, including filter, heater, your choice of substrate and plant in a minimum 3 gallon tank with a betta for like 60 bucks.

I can't believe my betta "Rainbow" lasted over seven years when I was a child. He was kept on the counter in a tiny bowl with no filter, heater, or decorations. The key to his long life I believe, is the amazing care my mother gave. She would feed him frozen shrimp on a pipe cleaner, and make sure he always had clean water. I just wish we knew he would have been much happier in a proper aquarium swimming around and exploring. Although that may have killed him, considering we never knew or heard anything about the nitrogen cycle
In fact, I just heard about it very recently after researching how to properly care for a beta fish because we've already had a couple die in our larger aquarium seemingly after living a few months Being very happy and active. Turns out, our big mistake was cleaning the entire tank, media, decorations every month or so whenever it was time to change out the filter media
We never let a proper nitrogen cycle take hold.

I had a guy at LFS criticize me for wanting to put a betta in a 10g. He said "you're gonna get a 10g tank for ONE fish?" I adopted a blue Betta fish yesterday. I had no idea how to take care of him. but as I see him I see he is very happy with me. And seriously I have fallen in love with him. he jiggles his fins and moves around the aquarium all the day. I just love to see him. seriously I had no idea how it feels when I adopt a fish. it is my first time and I am very happy with it. I promise I'll take care of him as much as I can.

I once bought a Wal-Mart betta back when I was in college. All of its surrounding mates were dead. I some how convinced them to give it to me for half the price. I'm no aquarist, but I kept Chronos in a 3 gal and an air stone and he was the longest living fish I ever kept. Then when I graduated I brought him with me. Set a 10 gallon, cycled and within 2 months he passed. I was so sad, had him for about 2 years. So the video made me feel a little better when it mentioned life span. I eventually got another and named him Atlas. Chronos started a trend.

Hi. I found this video this morning. My wife just picked out a very pretty Betta and we placed it in a 10 gallon tank. Right now it just has river rock in it but at some point I want to change that to gravel and put a filter on the tank. This is a great video. Thanks. I'm bookmarking it so my wife can watch it as well.

We had a betta when I was growing up who lived for nearly 10 years, five of that in my mother's classroom, after I left for college, with no problems. He was vibrant and curious. He would have lived longer I think, but one of my mother's students put handsoap in the aquarium, and the shock was just too much for the poor fish.
I currently have a copper betta who has almost a rose tail, who we've had just a few days who was a rescue from a pet store (he's got a positive buoyancy issue, and the pet store was getting ready to get rid of him because he was just floating. He's recovering well after the right treatment, and looks like he's going to make a full recovery!) I forgot how joyous a betta tank was to keep, and he's got a 5 gal cylindrical tank all to himself (I may introduce some ghost shrimp into the tank after he's made a full recovery, since I've had luck with them in the past pairing well with bettas)

I personally wouldn't keep a betta in anything less than 5g. Those tiny little aquariums are ridiculous. Our oldest betta lived for 3.5 yrs in our care.

@@rp101aquatics6 I think we've spent 14 to 20 dollars on a betta. Not bad at all considering I've spent about $80.00 on a Blue Oranda and that didn't even include shipping.

LESS than 5 gallons? That's absolutely ridiculous. My betta lived in a 1 gallon WITHOUT a heater and was forming a bubble nest - indicating he was very happy. Betta's may PREFER 5g+, but it's certainly not necessary. I would not waste money and time on a huge tank for one fish to live in.

    • @sunnycal2293
      @sunnycal2293 Pƙed 5 lety +5

@@dana4957 I'm sorry you feel this way about my feelings and what I personally wouldn't do. A betta will thrive more in more water volume and it's beautiful to watch them swim and explore their environment. Having more water volume gives you more time too to rectify a bad situation with water parameters if it should happen. 5g is not huge as you mentioned. There are a lot of people that would not even go lower than 10g. for a betta. I've kept single betta planted tanks only in 5g and 10g. (A couple of nerites in with the 10g)

We picked up a sad sick betta from a locally owned fish store, he passed away yesterday despite doing all we could. It is such an awful feeling to have a little life die in your care. We picked up a new betta yesterday and it was SO hard to choose one. It breaks my heart seeing them all sitting in their little containers at Petco đŸ„ș

I just recently bought a sick betta (he got early signs of swim bladder disease but he's doing good now) and at the store I asked the woman at the register to put him and a few other things I bought behind the counter because I forgot to grab something, well when I came back because they didnt have the item i needed and I asked another woman if I could get my bag from behind the counter WITH the fish in it. She ended up just picking it up not knowing that there was the betta in it. The little man was left unharmed but we both freaked out wondering if he was alright.
Needless to say I learned that you should always mention that you have a fish in a cup/bag when going to checkout so they dont get shaken up.

Also Betta fish prefer black water, less intense lighting and an acidic environment and/or botanicals (but these are not necessary, just makes them happier).

I've read and heard that black water is mainly important for wild bettas. Most spendens have been raised in regular tank water.

I agree with Madsen, bettas at your typical run of the mill pet store are raised in the local tap water. It’s better since most betta buyers are inexperienced and hardly know how to mess with their pH. But the beautiful thing about bettas is how well they adapt to any water so well.
Black water is very lovely tho, I too have a black water tank with a betta. Sand, driftwood, and almond leaves compliment bettas very well!

Betta splendens still get a lot of benefit from tannins in blackwater though. I have a Petsmart rescued half-moon male in a blackwater 5 gallon Fluval Spec now, but when I rescued him, half his tail had been eaten up with fin rot and I took him home and all I had on hand was a 2.5 Aqueon Minibow. But I never intended that to be his permanent home and he spent not even 3 months in it before his new actual home was ready. He's already growing back his tail now that he is soaking in those tannins and he's only been in the Fluval for barely two weeks. He is one happy fish now.
