I like how you just glazed over the hardest part of soldering the leads to the voice coil 😂 You used to have other videos showing how to do that, any chance you could share this part with us? Appreciate the content man!
I picked up a 12w7 that was believed to need it's voice coil replaced. Well, it did need a new vc but wasn't due to being burnt. It was due to the basket & it's ring it's bolted too, being shifted completely over. Pinching the hell outta the voice coil in the process. I learned real quick, that ring is a somebeach to get apart from the massive magnetic pull 200+ ounces (a guess) a magnet that size can provide. Hopefully I can finish this 1st time try of repairing a speaker. Kinda hard to discard a sub costing so much when it was sold. My gut tells me these JLs are some of the few subs that are truly worthy of such a rebuild. Thanks for informative video, I rewind it often. Mike bham
Yes very correct usually when you rebuild a subwoofer it has to have some kind of value behind it such as JL AUDIO, and other competition subwoofers that are just built to get abused

You said you "added" the measurement you got from dividing the top plate by 2- to the voice coils height. Everything I have read says the top plate 'half' measurement should be SUBTRACTED from the voice coil height reading's, in order to achieve its ideal placement. Just networking with ya~
I have a single terminal jl audio 10 W7.how do you attach the wire to the new coil?

Lot of People overpower the W-7's because of their great sound,they are not a pro vega comp sub,I would keep it at 1500 watts rms not much over that.
Aye, good video bro. You hit all the points! So what was wrong with them in the first place? I have the 12w7-3 subs and they need new foam they aren’t broke thru and when you flip it up to put the screws in the box the foam is cracked and messed up on the under side. I also need one ring that holds the foam down on the speaker it’s missing one. I bought them because I couldn’t pass up the deal. I got them for 250 cash and a Fosgate punch p400-4. The fosgste was worth some money but I only had 100 in it so basically got both 12s for 350.what is the best place to get the parts from? I don’t want the cheapest I want the best. That way they last a long time. I might try selling them because I have sound qubed 18s to put in my tshoe

Refoamed put back in box, can not get the ring back around, any suggestions, the outer ring that holds the outer edges in place, too tight with new foam

Thats a great job for not having the 13.5 custom shim Jl Audio has they use to set that thing perfectly straight,if the v.c is off a little it is toast.I also bought each of my w7-13s off of people that didnt know Jl rebuilds these,i basically paid 380 x 2 for Jl to rebuild them plus tax and shipping so i got two new 13z with 90 day warranties for 890$ and we all know theyre 1400 a piece new,anyway youve given me hope to attempt to rebuild one myself.

why do you clean the parts as you put the sub back together, is it just some kinda sub ha,ha that I don't under stand, I would clean all the part's real good after disassembly and definitely before reassembling the sub,I mean that's just me I like doing thing's right the first time,peace out.

Did you reuse the tinsel leads or were they ordered with the new voice coil? They were molded to the factory coil and appear to be molded to the aftermarket coil you installed. Just curious how you did that, was wanting the same.
Eric I yeah so the leads came with the spider so I just soldered them to the coil and to the leads on the frame

I was going to purchase a used JL AE 13 for 500 but the spider is brown. I haven't been in car av for a long time. I noticed that the spider should be yellow. Is it normal for it to be brown? Maybe overtime?
Weech0 well all I can say is that I’ve never seen them have a brown spider. Even on this one I was repairing, it had sat in direct sunlight till the foam fell apart and it was yellow when I took it apart. Maybe it’s been rebuilt before

Sergio Delarosa you would need to order the surround and a coil kit that comes attached to a spider already and salvage some of the parts from your old subwoofer

Omar Banda you’ll need a coil that is dual 1ohm, you’ll need a new spider, and you may be able to salvage your surround if it’s still good. Or you may need to order a new one

Kelly Carson yes so I ended up cutting the spider with an exacto knife and then started chipping the edges away because it has epoxy on it so it chips pretty easily
carlosbeltran92 i already removed the spider with the exacto and i have my voice coil ready to be dropped in but the epoxy is so thick i cant get it off. Ive used adhesive removers and dremel and still cant get it to bare metal. Just wondering if you used something special... thank you! And great video btw!

HOW? How do you center it. especially if you put the wrench in there to push the membrane to the top. How do you make sure that the coil doesnt scratch the magnet after the glue has hardened ? is it even possible to glue it in place exactly centered ?

@@Broxine you install the spider to the coil with the coil collar and then you shim coil into the basket. Then you apply epoxy to the spider landing and push the spider into the epoxy and let it cure. then install the cone assembly and then lastly pull the shims. easy!
Rzabo2004 is the paper that he used to center the coil act as a shim?
I place even size piece of upholstery foam at every spoke of the basket.
Other than the wrench and tape being used is my only issue with this video other than that my man did a very nice job!

Your not gonna find one, jl dont sell them and your not gonna find after market. Im currently looking for a recoil now and nothing but if you find something please let me know and if i find something ill let you know
There are now a few people on Facebook claiming they can re-cone JL subwoofers. I found them in marketplace.
What ohm coils did you use? And size spiders?
I used the 1 ohm coil and the spider is on eBay listed under jl audio 13.5 spider. If you can’t find it there try lordofbass.com

You will need new spider, new coil for sure so just there you’re looking at around 100 bucks in parts

Flexx444 01 if you can push the cone down and can’t hear the coil rubbing against anything than check your resistance with a multimeter should be around 1 ohm

It’s a clamp that holds your surround down its the aluminum around the foam

You can buy a spider that already has woven leads along with a coil that has ordinary leads and jst solder them together at the coil, and Solder the other end of the tinsels leads at the stock jl terminals
