One suggestion to anyone doing these if you're in a wet or northern (snow) climate - rip or rout a 15 degree bevel on the upper edge of ea . of the cross-battens. This stops them from being a water trap and will help them dry much more quickly.
Concern: since these are exterior shutters the nails/brads you used to hold battens in place won't last too long. Better to use an exterior grade screw.
So, we built these for our house...looks great! We stained like you did, using dark walnut. We also used same poplar wood. We are ready to hang....Question is, how and where did he screw this to the brick? I don't see any screw holes in the shutters. Thanks!
Excellent video. My husband and I will be making these for our new house based upon your instructions. Thank you ! Question, do we have to stain, or can we just use a clear coat of poly?
The comment and the response are both correct. 👍🏼 I do like the look of how they did it, as doing it completely above the bottom brick border can make it look like "high-waters" (too short).
If we had to do it over again, we would have gotten 1x6 pressure treated material, let them dry out for a couple of weeks, and then use a good exterior paint on them.

Very helpful, thank you for making this video! Hoping to build and install these in the coming weeks.
How were they mounted on the house wall?

I agree but you saw the glue too right
Thanks for the video.
What color stain did you use on the shutters? Also wondering if you knew what color the paint is on the exterior of the house?
I want these on my house. Eventually :)
Wonder what the "crown of the wood" is and how I will recognize it? OR, is it really a big deal at all?

So sorry for just seeing this comment. Did you get them hung? :). We used exterior screws and screwed through both horizontal pieces into the wall.
Did you also make the window boxes?

You can use poly too.
May i ask sir what did you apply and how
I see these were attached via exterior screws. How'd you go about hiding the screws on the shutters? Or are they visible
They are slightly visible, but they blend in with the color of the wood.
Did you use the kiln-dried poplar?
Exactly how were the shutters attached to the brick home without showing screws? Are there clips behind? or wood filler after the fact?
We put one exterior grade screw at the bottom in both of the horizontal pieces, you just can't see them because they are brown like the stain. :)
Amazing
Nice video but if you look closer to the final picture, the shutters can't be closed because of the edge of the wall beneath the window ..
The shutters are not meant to be closed. Most shutters in America are just for looks, not functional.
closed??? lolol

what wood would you use if you were going to paint them?

Could have put clamps while measuring and marking.
What size nails did you use to secure the battens to the boards?
We used an exterior polyurethane wood glue or adhesive between the boards with 18 gauge, 1 1/4 finish nails.
AWESOME
You should visit wood prix website if you would like to make it by yourself I think.
What did you use to stain the wood?
Minwax, Dark Walnut
Does Minwax even make an exterior Dark Walnut wood stain....if so, I can't find it.
Hinges ?
how were these hung to the wall ?
A Cox They were screwed into the brick with exterior screws.
does anyone know what color stain they might have used ???
looks like a dark walnut, little too dark to be gunstock but wood can change it drastically
Minwax Dark Walnut
I was going to have to buy them for like 300 bucks a pair. Yeah nk, Id much rather make them myself.
Is this the type of glue that is sniffable. Asking for my good pal J. Biden.
shutters that don't shut ... should call them perhaps "unshutters" ?
95% of shutters in America are nonfunctional. Not exactly a newsflash...
