I so wanted to like this DIY since I'm wanting to do the same.
The shutters look too short. The window flower box gives the illusion that the window is bigger.
For purely aesthetic reasons.. It would look better if the shutters came down in line with where the window box ends. But good job making your own

I agree they are too short and should been measured down to the bottom of the window box.

Personally, I think they are cute. Some people just aren't getting it, that if you had made the shutters longer, to reaching the bottom of the window box, that wouldn't be realistic at all! You chose correctly!
You should have put a gap between boards to accommodate for expansion...looks great 👍
Maybe wider and taller to look like real shutters that would cover the window.
They are only supposed to cover the glass. Really should be mounted on inside edge of trim with hinges if you want them to function properly. They need to be the size of the glass only. Makes flat profile so the wind won’t catch them.
I disagree with everyone saying they look too short, it’s a small window which = small shutters. These were so cute and they are really giving that little window a moment. We are hoping to put shutters on our new house and you make it look so easy! Thanks for the great vid:)
I've been toying with the idea of adding shutters to my house for a year. I came here for infos and it turns out that I would fall in the "Don't" category. So you helped me by not going foward with the project and I'll find something that will fit my house better!
From France, a country with a tradition of shutters, there is a geometry attached to them, and it’s very challenging to adapt them to other types of architecture. That said I have seen in New England some beautifully proportioned shutters that were never used as such, of course. It’s all in the proportions.
For those who think the shutters should be as long as the flower box.... how would you close the shutters with the box in the way? The premise is, shutters should be able to close and cover the window... I like the authentic look. Guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And since we’re all just beholders, ours are all just opinions. And you know what they say about opinions😉

Your finished shutters look great. I've never cared for shutters unless they are actually big enough to cover the window if they were to be closed. To me the proportions are all off unless you could at least in theory shut them. I've never put them on my own house for that reason as my windows are too large, but the window you used was a good size. I like that you shuttered only one window - it's a nicer accent by not having then on every window. And your pictures of the fails - what can I say - I had some great laughs!
Shutters add so so much curb appeal - I think they look warm and inviting. I recently made really similar shutters for our daughters little house and they are so cute. I used screws going into the cross piece from behind and than I countersunk the screws attaching them to the house - using exterior grade screws so we don't have problems with rusting later on. Hopefully they will last a long time!

I don't understand how anyone can own a home in the gulf coast of the US and NOT have functional window shutters. Last time a hurricane blew through where I live (Houston) it was amazing to see all the houses with boarded up windows that had mere decorative shutters showing.
Sometimes the do’s turn into a don’t. Your knowledge is correct but the look is off. I would choose one or the other, flower box or shutter for this window.
Thanks for tackling a fun project with a can-do attitude. It's fun to see what works for your space and plan what will work for ours. Now tackling it is a whole lot less intimidating.

I needed a good chuckle, too many unfortunate shudders. I live in Florida and I love to drive to St. Augustine and take photos of all the beautiful old details of hurricane shudders and other preserved doors and windows.
I disagree with some of the comments,if you put the shutters to the bottom of the window box,they would be too long,especially if for some reason you remove the window box. Because of the trim around the window, I think they are a good size. I would however paint them,but that's just me. Nice job,thanks for sharing!

I love a man with skills, that wants to help his mate with nesting.. makes for sweet coupling.. and memories made together and pride taken in the end.. I LOVE the shutters.. and disagree with the others saying they are too small. They should only be the size of the window panes being covered.. anything larger, and they look cartoonish.. you are attempting to recreate the look of functional shutters.. which covered the panes.. frame it nicely.. the wood looks beautiful. Cute. Agree with the plans. I know this window must be bothering you. I would invest in a large plant or specimen tree for this area. It will balance this window.

Next time, finish the shutters before you install them - easier than getting on the ladder and you can protect both sides.

My house has bars on the windows that I don’t want to remove because the safety in our area isn’t the best. They have a rose design on them and look okay too, but I love the idea of shutters. Would it look dumb to do shutters even though the windows have bars? HELP
One of my fondest memories is staying at my Dad’s cousin’s house in Provence France and opening the beautiful shutters every morning to an outstanding view....I was only 20 the first time I went and I don’t think I even realized that shutters had a purpose until I experienced it for myself....
I think 1 window with shutters looks silly and are too small

the shutter is the correct size, it goes where the glass is.
Apparently it was decided to clearcoat the hard way. The assembled shutters could have easily been coated BEFORE installing and made life a whole lot easier.

I kind of agree but I see why they are smaller because the window is smaller. The flower box throws it off. Too much detail for one little window. But hey....not my window either😁

I disagree that the shutters are too short. I think the major thing that would help this area would be to have some great foundation plants near the house- you need some taller evergreens and other foundation plants to fill in the bed area under the window. It would make a huge difference! Your house is so cute- having the right plants near the house makes such a difference.
Yes, I have small plants down in those beds that I was hoping would fill in and grow a bit quicker! But I've gotten other suggestions for some other options to try in this bed as well.
You didn't mention how wide they need to be. That was my big question. If you have a super large window does the shutter have to be half the width? Sometimes that would be a lot.
The original use for shutters was to cover and protect the window, so yes, it should be half the width. Although, we both know that would look weird. I personally, would forego the shutters on big windows. :)

Hi....I live in a very old home on a farm....I want to switch to real wood shutters....so I have been collecting old shutters for the front of my home...solid for bottom and louvered for top. I live 15 minutes from Historic Old New Castle in Delaware.....I road through and noticed louvered on top and solid on bottom....I asked a lady why they were like that...she said solid on bottom for privacy and safety and louvered up top for hot air to escape....just thought I would add to your research....we have a small carriage house on our farm we made the board and batten shutters for that...they look great! thank you for sharing😊k

Oh no! Too short! If you could cut off that little notch at the bottom so the shutters could come to the top of the planter box, they would be
much more in proportion. As they are they look like a mistake. Also, I think they would look better if they were painted white to match. The natural wood just kind of sticks out and looks unfinished.

How did you affix the trim around the window? I'd like to do that to our windows but I worry about water getting into nail holes.

Always love what you do, but these feel out of proportion and look awkward. I believe that shutters should look as though they are functional, even if strictly decorative. Since doing just the one window, it would be worth investing in cedar. Regardless of the material,
I think scale is off and would prefer none to these. As I said, love your style and look, just not these.
