While being proud of Ramanujan, at the same time I admire the sense of sincerity, ethics and value of Prof. Hardy. He could have tossed the letter from the math genius and never looked at it. He did not feel even once to steal his ideas and publish them as his own. The world has to thank both him and Ramanujan for having come across each other. But for Prof Hardy, we would probably not heard of the genius who knew infinity.

+healingvoicepdx Somehow, my friend, Prof. Hardy was destined to be a part of the course that Ramanujan was born for. Everything has a purpose and roles are pre-designated. The way you perform is left solely at your discretion.
+healingvoicepdx Well, Hardy seems was interested more for the development of his field than let his ego get between what he loved (maths) and this weird genius or crazy person from India. Perhaps it was also that he was at an age when most mathematicians lose their game, so he saw this promising young man and thought "oh my God, this is a goldmine of mathematical knowledge I must save !!!". And he did.
Not everyone would have done so for many reasons, even today, so Ramanujan was extremely lucky that Hardy was there at the right time.
Just wonder how many Ramanujans went unnoticed because they didn't find their own professor Hardy...😔

I am an artist, but the story of Ramanujan is an inspiration to me. His inner world of mathematics is astonishing and his life story is heart-breaking.
I'm physics and I really agree with you, his inner world is to me overwhelming and incredible, he was the greatest genius of mathematics in the world for me because he intuited many theorems even though he created his own notation to understand his mathematics thoughts

He was great.. Genius but he couldn't balance his life.. Emotions health.. Anything extreme eccentric is hazardous.. .great personality.

@Vishwadev Tamilians have some basic misconceptions.... Firstly they still believe the British lie of the Dravidian and Aryan divide....which has long been disproven by dna....all Indians share same genetic markers.... Any mixing happened approx 60k yrs ago....Secondly they believe Tamil is source of other dravidian languages, when in reality it originated from a proto language parent to other branches such as Telugu.... Don't try to portray yourself separate from India...we are all helplessly Indians.....

To commemorate the connection between the renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan and Trinity College, the College hopes to award each year a Ramanujan Research Studentship in the broad field of Pure or Applied Mathematics to an applicant from India hoping to do research for the PhD degree in Cambridge.
I believe there is also now a bust of Ramanujan at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge.
If I multiply 111, sequence length upto 30digits with itself, and with7twice why do I get 1728 and 1729 in my sum. Is it Both or nothing seen by both Hardy and Ramanujam in the world of utilitarian ideas that are separate from the ideas alone. It is so sad that here in India we were never taught about his life in schools. The left academicians were busy in glorifying barbaric mughals. But Indian heros were always kept in shadow...but truth always break all barriers and come out strong.

My deepest respect to Prof. G.H. Hardy for looking after S. Ramanujan. He was really an honest person and best mentor one could possibly have. And immensely Proud of Ramanujan Sir, one of the all time greats.

I believe the good news is that Mrs Ramanujan enjoyed a number of pensions and awards from various bodies - the governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, the Indian National Science Academy, the Ramanujan Mathematical Society (founded in 1985) and the Hinduja Foundation. Mrs Ramanujan died on April 13, 1994, aged 94.
What kind of joy is there when you have lost your genius and loving husband atleast there is no joy in such situation for an indian woman like me.
Felt very sad to see the conditions of the house and the photo of the great Ramanujam. Its really painful for a young widow to live a life like this. Amma.... Namaskarams to both of you. 🙌🙏🙏

12:14 Ramanujan's wife? I googled and found she was alive till 1994. Blessed lady to have seen a legend when he was alive.

@@sreehari972 no. His wife later after his passing adopted a son and raised him alone.
@@sreehari972she was 9 when they married and he was 21. She remained with her own family for 3 years after the marriage. He left for England not long after. Upon his return to India he was seriously ill and died not long afterwards. I doubt they had relations and suspect Ramunujan had Asperger’s.

I recommend David Leavitt's "The Indian Clerk" to fill in the gaps (Hardy's hapless life, Littlewood and his wife's infatuation with Ramanujan, Bertie Russell, etc.,). Again, thank you….. especially the photographs, footage, and excellent narration. Very much appreciated. A sad but brilliant life.
Truly inspiring! The power of genius. My big take away is simple: for anyone with a natural talent, if cultivated to the extreme extent as did Ramanujan regarding his mathematical aptitude, well, genius lies within the possibility of all. Of course, how few can really be as engrossed in the subject so as to shun eating meals and the like. Truly remarkable ... truly remarkable.

Actually crossing the sea does not mean you lose your caste.
It simply means that you will have to conform with their society.
For eg Indians consider the cow as one of five mothers and the Brits eat them.
There are also myths that there should not be a sea between a husband and wife.
The foundation being there was a sea between Ram (India) and Seeta (Sri lanka) and they could not live peacefully after that.
It is a superstition but so is going to a church or wearing a cross.

My son had an instinctual understanding of math too so I have seen first hand the frustration caused when someone asks for proofs of something that, to the author, is as natural as breathing. It is like being asked to prove that blue is blue or that water is wet. It just is.

Hardy and Littlewood were two of the greatest mathematicians of their time, and their work and influence is important to this day. Among their contributions are the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, the Hardy-Littlewood conjectures, the Hardy-Weinberg principle, Littlewood's conjecture, Littlewood-Paley theory, and a number of Tauberian theorems and zeta function results between them.
Hardy in particular is also one of the greatest expositors of mathematics of all time.

Hardy and (the other guy!) Littlewood were already established mathematicians when RAMANUJAN was brought to Cambridge. Their contribution to mathematics has been immense.

Apparently, mathematical geniuses do their best work when they are young, so we can be thankful that he at least lived until his early 30s.
you are 100% correct. The social customs and taboos prevalent at his time particularly to Brahmins ,made Ramanujan not to take his wife abroad pushing him to sruggle for food. The backlog of rigorous Indian Brahminical tradition,made him shun food items available and suitable to the climatic conditions of a cold country leading to his falling a prey to TB which cost his great invaluable life. Atleast it was prudent, that great scientists -Astro-Physist Mr.Chandra sekar did not follow his ways .
Ramanujan had already suffered from other health conditions right from his childhood.

Starting at 49:24 the narrator says that while Hardy has a plaque at the Trinity bowling green and Littlewood's bust is in the common room, there is no memorial to Ramanujan. Well, there is in fact a bronze plaque to Ramanujan at Trinity - put up sometime after this documentary was made, I assume. Surprisingly, the devout Hindu Brahmin's memorial can be found in Trinity College Chapel.
