  • The African Transformation Movement is part of the Progressive Caucus, which includes the EFF, UDM, Al Jamaah, PAC and other smaller parties. The MK Party announced at the weekend it too would join its ranks in the National Assembly. The grouping plans to take on the ANC-led government of national unity. ATM leader Vuyolwethu Zungula tells Iman Rappetti that the ANC is misleading the country about the GNU. He says it is just a coalition between ANC and DA.

Isn’t parliament a place for debate by other parties? He doesn’t seem to be aware of the process of a structure of passing any laws and alliances having the right to put their policy to the whole assembly. Then every party has the right put their opinion before the house where the record is allowed to be voted on. If he doesn’t have enough seats or allies the vote can be vetoed in favour of a majority vote by other parties. It’s not a given that if DA comes up with a suggestion that they change the law in some way that the ANC has to agree with it, it still has to be debated and the vote goes to all members and again it can go against the DA in favour of a majority vote. These sour objections before the actual sitting is a classic way to scare the people who don’t understand the process into believing racist remarks and thinking that apartheid will come back. If that ever happened - the rest of the world sanction the DA into an early grave. HOWEVER - SANCTIONS ARE STILL POSSIBLE IF THIS GOVERNMENT COALITION FAILS TO TAKE OFF. There is absolutely no confidence in those smaller parties forming another coalition under EFF auspice to boost their numbers so that they can nullify the democratic rights of the vote.

@@Bommogoclearly the majority did not vote for them if the other parties could form a coalition of 55%. The MKP had the opportunity to align with the IFP, they decided to keep them waiting and not show up. This is a pattern of behaviour that we saw even last night with their press conference where they kept the public waiting for FIVE hours, only for someone else to actually read the speech while Zuma sat next to him. Does that sound like people who are engaged and prepared for political processes? Does that sound like a group that respects others?
