      But ya, all of those orca names are named after tribes in the PNW, actually. Over the years, there are pods that have figured out that our Native waters protect them. No one can hunt on our land or waters without permission. Most of us are whaling cultures in general so now it's really cool to go to our harbors and see them. They come all the way up to our piers and docks so we can touch them. It's ok to be jealous now! Lol

      @@esmeraldagreengate4354 oh they can't say it didn't happen! This story broke in the 80s, and continued without much notice until the movie "blackfish" from Netflix. Locals have thousands of home videos just from the PNW of people coming and taking calves. That's how we ended up getting a shit ton of PETA protestors eventually move out to our area and surrounding areas.
      There are thousands of hours of footage, protests, and former hunters all over the internet. It wasn't called SeaWorld at 1st and I can't remember what they called it before it split then sold out to SeaWorld and other parks. But there is literally NO HUNTERS from that time defending what they were doing.
      Corporations didn't expect to hear from tribes AND hunters. They didn't think the hunters would quit because they recognized something was wrong. Most hunters are conservationists, much like my own ancestors. You have to have respect, and you have to protect your prey for future generations. We do the same in logging. Anyways....go look up the Orca cries. Tons of footage. The spy hop as well.

    My wife and I visited Seaworld for the first time about 3 years ago. I've always heard that the sea creatures cannot be returned to the wild because previous attempts failed, resulting in death due to survivabiliy issues after captivity. The park was lackluster with faded paint, generally seemed a bit run down and dated but I put it past me and tried to have a good time. Before leaving, we got onto a lift that took us above the park. Looking down, I was overwhelmed with a depressing sense of how confined the sea creatures were. I never want to go back. We recently went took our son to one of the larger standard zoos in america. Though it was a little less depressing, I generally felt the same way as I did at Seaworld about the monkeys, penguins and other larger animals that need more space. The older primapes looked defeated.

    • @rjallenbach1
      @rjallenbach1 Před 2 lety +16

      Not all zoos are bad, many are part of breeding programs that bring back near extinct animals from poaching or loss of habitat. The San Diego Zoo for example also has their Wild Animal Park sister park in Escondido, CA (now called Safari Park I believe), it's basically a huge wide open space for animals to live in a natural sanctuary type environment, they're also closely connected with African sanctuaries. Part of the issue is helping these animals takes enormous amounts of funding, in some cases the enclosed attractions are necessary to make money. It's not always the case though, and there's definitely zoos in the world that are nothing more than animal cages for people to gawk at. But I agree, it's depressing to see the animals with all their vigor taken away, especially the predator animals

    Years ago there was a place called Marineland in Florida just south of St Augustine. We went there on a Sunday, but they were closed. However, the entrance gate was open and the place deserted, so we just went in, after all, it's usually easier to be forgiven than get permission, lol What amazed me were the dolphins. They were very friendly, thinking we had fish, and we were very respectful of them. I especially noticed how, although they were all in separate pens, they each stayed face to face quietly through the gates between the pens socializing as best they could with each other. We left feeling how wrong it was to keep these amazing animals in captivity. I also once was swimming off a deserted beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia, and several wild dolphins came over and swam around us without being at all aggressive. These creatures deserve better from us.

    regarding dolphin communication: you can already see dozens if not hundreds of people on youtube training their cats and dogs to use those communication buttons (each button represents a word and you can see dogs forming entire sentences it’s insane!!), so now take an animal that’s arguably much smarter than a dog and give it that communication device. Dolphins probably understand deep and abstract concepts more than most people realize. They’re one of the very few species (aside from humans and I think monkeys) that hunt for sport and not just for food.

      @Deeols Joajksks if they did research they would know that seaworld, in 2016, swore to no longer house or breed orcas beyond the currently existing ones so once the ones that are at seaworld parks now are no longer alive seaworld will never house orcas ever again. theyve undergone a massive marketing shift that includes phasing out their ownership of non-rescued cetaceans, as well as putting more emphasis on conservation and environmentalism. theyve rescued and rehabilitated over 38,000 animals in their history and were willing to shift their image and marketing scheme for the sake of appealing to better understanding of adequate husbandry that has arisen in recent years. if these guys did their research they should know this, and they should also know that "empty the tanks" rhetoric tends to be hyperemotional and uses massive outlying statistics that are deceiving, claiming that "dolphins in captivity average 13 years whilst they can live up to 40 in the wild," without providing the actual average lifespan of a dolphin in the wild, which is 16 years, and the 13 year average includes dolphins that were rescued and may have died prematurely due to injury or illness hitherto, as well as includes statistics of dolphins in captivity from before we better understood what adequate cetacean husbandry was. if there were to be any animal to push for the limitation of captivity of i would argue that it is cetaceans, as they are comparable in intelligence to gorillas and chimps but travel massive swaths of ocean every day, but dolphin ppl need to start using accurate and applicable information when arguing against cetaceans in captivity in order for anything they say to be taken seriously. Seaworld has not taken orcas from the wild for nearly 50 years, they house them in groups in the 2nd largest man-made saltwater environment ever made, and i agree it still isnt enough, but them even eventually deciding to make the moves theyre making now means they understand that too

      @Urn Turn when outliers are removed, i'll admit average lifespan for wild dolphins is 29.2 years but at the same time when googling "dolphin lifespan in captivity" its likely to give the answer of "12 years and 9 months" which is a statistic pulled from research from 1988, other sources still cite research from the 1990s, whilst a reputable scholarly paper from 2010 states that average dolphin lifespan in captivity is 97% what it is in the wild. again, i will concede that of all the animals to oppose a captive population of, cetaceans are the ones i am most likely to agree with, but just because you have "multiple resources" doesnt mean any of them arent using misleading information due to the fact that the first several sources are hitpieces calling against cetaceans in captivity
